Determination of vitamin D and analysis of risk factors for osteoporosis in patients with chronic pain

Influence of Marine Aerobic Biofilms on Corrosion of 316L Stainless Steel

The influence of marine aerobic biofilms on the corrosion of 316L stainless steel （SS） in aerated and deaerated seawater was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS）, potentiodynamic polarisation curves, current-potential curves and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy （SEM-EDS）. EIS and SEM-EDS results showed that the aero- bic biofilms inhibited 316L SS corrosion within the test duration. Comparison of results under aerated and deaerated conditions revealed that 02 enhanced the inhibition efficiency of the aerobic biofilms. This result indicated that living cells were necessary for the aerobic biofilms to inhibit the corrosion of 316L SS. Polarization curves indicated that the biofilms mainly inhibited anode ac- tion. Current-potential curves under deaerated conditions showed that electron transfer processes occurred between microorganisms and electrodes. Moreover, 316L SS as an electron acceptor was protected from corrosion.

Peripheral mitochondrial DNA as a neuroinflammatory biomarker for major depressive disorder

In the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder, chronic stress-related neuroinflammation hinders favorable prognosis and antidepressant response. Mitochondrial DNA may be an inflammatory trigger, after its release from stress-induced dysfunctional central nervous system mitochondria into peripheral circulation. This evidence supports the potential use of peripheral mitochondrial DNA as a neuroinflammatory biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder. Herein, we critically review the neuroinflammation theory in major depressive disorder, providing compelling evidence that mitochondrial DNA release acts as a critical biological substrate, and that it constitutes the neuroinflammatory disease pathway. After its release, mitochondrial DNA can be carried in the exosomes and transported to extracellular spaces in the central nervous system and peripheral circulation. Detectable exosomes render encaged mitochondrial DNA relatively stable. This mitochondrial DNA in peripheral circulation can thus be directly detected in clinical practice. These characteristics illustrate the potential for mitochondrial DNA to serve as an innovative clinical biomarker and molecular treatment target for major depressive disorder. This review also highlights the future potential value of clinical applications combining mitochondrial DNA with a panel of other biomarkers, to improve diagnostic precision in major depressive disorder.

Inhibition of Zinc Corrosion by Fucoidan in Natural Sea water

Research on corrosion behaviour of zinc in natural sea water without and with fucoidan was carried out by potentiodynamic polarisation test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS）. The results revealed that fucoidan serves as a good inhibitor for zinc in sea water. Polarisation curves suggested that corrosion potential values shifted to the positive ones after adding inhibitor and fucoidan retards anodic reaction more. Thus, fucoidan can be acted as anodic inhibitor. EIS results showed two phenomena including a charge transfer and an adsorption film. The corrosion inhibition of fucoidan was further confirmed by the scanning electron microscope （SEM） and atomic force microscope （AFM） analysis. Langmuir＇s adsorption isotherm was found the appropriate adsorption model.

Survey of traditional Dai medicine reveals species confusion and potential safety concerns: a case study on Radix Clerodendri Japonicum

The adulteration of herbal products is a threat to consumer safety. In the present study, we surveyed the species composition of commercial Radix Clerodendri Japonicum products using DNA barcoding as a supervisory method. A reference database for plant-material DNA-barcode was successfully constructed with 48 voucher samples from 12 Clerodendrum species. The database was used to identify 27 Radix Clerodendri Japonicum decoction piece samples purchased from drug stores and hospitals. The DNA sequencing results revealed that only 1 decoction piece(3.70%) was authentic C. japonicum, as recorded in the Dai Pharmacopeia, whereas the other samples were all adulterants, indicating a potential safety issue. The results indicate that decoction pieces that are available in the market have complex origins and that DNA barcoding is a suitable tool for regulation of Dai medicines.

Gallic Acid: A Potential Anti-Cancer Agent

Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide and definitive therapeutics for treating cancer are not yet available despite extensive research efforts. The key challenges include limiting factors connected with traditional chemotherapeutics, primarily drug resistance, low response rates, and adverse side-effects. Therefore, there is a high demand for novel anti-cancer drugs that are both potent and safe for cancer prevention and treatment. Gallic acid(GA), a natural botanic phenolic compound, can mediate various therapeutic properties that are involved in anti-inflammation, anti-obesity, and anti-cancer activities. More recently, GA has been shown to exert anti-cancer activities via several biological pathways that include migration, metastasis, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, angiogenesis, and oncogene expression. This review discusses two aspects, one is the anti-cancer potential of GA against different types of cancer and the underlying molecular mechanisms, the other is the bibliometric analysis of GA in cancer and tumor research. The results indicated that lung cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer, and colon adenocarcinoma may become a hot topic in further research. Overall, this review provides evidence that GA represents a promising novel, potent, and safe anti-cancer drug candidate for treating cancer.

Clinical features, surgical outcomes and genetic analysis of ectodermal dysplasia with ocular diseases

AIM: To report on the clinical features, surgical outcomes and gene mutation analysis of three ectodermal dysplasia probands with ocular diseases. METHODS: A case-note review of three unrelated probands diagnosing with ectodermal dysplasia with ocular diseases was undertaken. Patient clinical features and the outcomes of surgery were analysed. The suspected pathogenic genes were analysed by whole exome sequencing from patients with ectodermal dysplasia and Sanger sequencing from family ***: The ocular clinical features of ectodermal dysplasia with ocular diseases mainly include eyelid ectropion, lagophthalmos and absence of lacrimal punctum. All the probands underwent surgeries of full-thickness free skin flap grafting to correct ectropion. They achieved good recovery, and there were no obvious complications during the follow-up. The gene sequencing results did not show any meaningful genetic ***: Lid ectropion is one of the key clinical traits of ectodermal dysplasia with ocular diseases. Ectropion correction with full-thickness free skin flap grafting is an effective procedure to correct ectropion for ectodermal dysplasia patients with ichthyosis-like tissue. The suspected pathogenic genes of ectodermal dysplasia with ectropion should be further verified or confirmed by large samples of the family.

Causes for the Unimodal Pattern of Leaf Carbon Isotope Composition in Abies faxoniana Trees Growing in a Natural Forest along an Altitudinal Gradient

Leaf morphological and physiological traits of Abies faxoniana growing in a natural forest along an altitudinal gradient were measured with the aim to identify the central mechanism for the marked variation in foliar δ13C determined by an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. There is a unimodal pattern of plant functional traits in these temperate and semi- humid areas. Stomatal parameters, specific leaf area, and C/N ratio increased, whereas C, N and δ13C values decreased with increasing altitude below 3000 m a.s.1. In contrast, they exhibited opposite trends above 3000 m a.s.l.. Our results demonstrated that high-altitude plants achieve higher water use efficiency （WUE） at the expense of decreasing nitrogen use efficiency （NUE）, whereas plants at 3000 m can maintain a relatively higher NUE but a lower WUE. Such intra-specific differences in the trade-off between NUE and WUE may partially explain the altitudinal distribution of the plants in relation to moisture and nutrient availability. Our results clearly indicate that the functional relations between nutritional status and the structure of leaves are responsible for the altitudinal variations associated with δ13C. The pivotal role of specific leaf area in regulating plant adaptive responses provides a potential physiological mechanism for the observed growth advantage of populations occupying the medium altitude. These adaptive responses altitudinal gradients showed that an altitude to of approximately 3000 m a.s.1, is the optimum distribution zone for A. faxoniana, allowing the most vigorous growth and metabolism. These results improve our understanding of the various roles of environmental and biotic variables upon δ13C dynamics and provide useful information for subalpine coniferous forest management.
