Trace elements migrating from tailings to rock varnish laminated sediments in an old mining region from Nelson,Nevada,USA

The dispersion and influence of soluble and particulate trace elements(TEs) present in the materials from abandoned mines is an imminent problem on terrestrial and aquatic *** goal of this research is to provide a broader view of such transport,assessing particle size distribution and TE interactions(e.g.,scavenging) with mine tailings and locally derived sediments transported by water in arid *** grains from wash sediment were collected from a dry ephemeral wash in Nelson,Nevada where the Techatticup Mine and Mill worked between 1850 and *** were evaluated to determine the association and behavior of certain metals and metalloids including aluminum,arsenic,barium,cadmium,copper,chromium,iron,manganese,lead,selenium,vanadium,and zinc to rock varnish laminated *** show that some metals and metalloids were more concentrated on larger particles whereas others indicated the opposite *** example,As was greatest on silt fractions and least on coarse fractions,while Se was detected only on ***,Cu,Fe,Mn,Pb,and Zn concentrations all increased with decreasing particle size(silt> sand> coarse),whereas Al,Ba,and V showed the opposite trend(silt d d Se were lower in mine tailing sediment treated with wash than those obtained for source *** in treated wash sediment samples,the high EFs of Ba,Cr,V,and Mn suggested a possible greater affinity of these metals to the Al,Fe,and Mn oxides from the RV *** data found in this study show that transport of contaminated sediments in arid regions could lead to the enrichment of some TEs in downgradient areas from source materials.

Rapid on-site identification of volatile organic compounds （VOCs） in ambient air is an important first step in remediation efforts. This study describes modification of a commercially available, portable GC/MS system and development of an analysis protocol for rapid （〈 3 min） sampling and identification of VOCs typically found at contaminated sites at the low ppbv level.

decoupling co-existing surface plasmon polariton （SPP） modes in a nanowire plasmonic waveguide for quantitative mode analysis

Knowledge of surface plasmon polariton （SPP） modes in one-dimensional （1d） metallic nanostructures is essential for the development of subwavelength optical devices such as photonic circuits, integrated light sources, and photo- detectors. despite many efforts to characterize the propagation parameters of these subwavelength 1d plasmonic waveguides, such as Ag nanowires, large discrepancies exist among available reports owing to their sensitivity to the relative weights of co-existing SPP modes and the lack of a method of decoupling these modes and analyzing them separately. In this work, we develop an interference method to distinguish different SPP modes that are simultaneously excited in a Ag nanowire waveguide and measure their propagation parameters separately. By extracting information from the propagation-distance- dependent intensity oscillations of the scattered light from the nanowire tip, the effective refractive indices, propagation lengths, and relative mode weights of co-existing SPP modes supported by the nanowire are derived from a mode interference model. These parameters depend strongly on the nanowire diameter and excitation wavelength. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility of selective excitation of different SPP modes by varying the nanowire diameter. This new mode analysis technique provides unique insights into the develop- ment and optimization of SPP-based applications.

An AMR Capable Finite Element diffusion Solver for ALE Hydrocodes

We present a novel method for the solution of the diffusion equation on a composite AMR mesh. This approach is suitable for including diffusion based physics modules to hydrocodes that support ALE and AMR capabilities. To illustrate, we proffer our implementations of diffu- sion based radiation transport and heat conduction in a hydrocode called ALE-AMR. Numerical experiments conducted with the diffusion solver and associated physics packages yield 2nd order convergence in the L2 norm.

The effect of manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture on lower limb muscle strength

Objective： To determine whether six weeks＇ of acupuncture has a positive effect on plantar flexion muscle strength and whether electroacupuncture （EA） has a greater effect than manual acupuncture （MA） on plantar flexion, so that the most beneficial method of acupuncture can be established for strengthening muscles. Methods： A randomized controlled trial with parallel groups. A total of 20 participants were randomly assigned to three groups： a control/non-acupuncture group （n=6）, a manual acupuncture group （MAG）（n=8） and an electroacupuncture group （EAG）（n=6）. MAG and EAG received three 25-minute treatments per week for 6 weeks. The control group continued with their normal training activity and received no treatment. The maximal voluntary contraction （MVC） of the ankle plantar-flexors at 30~ per second was measured using Biodex system 3, Results： Both MA and EA had a positive effect in increasing plantar flexion strength. The likelihood for this happening was high; 69% for MA and 92% for EA when compared with the control group. However the effect size was small for both groups. There was only a trivial difference in the effect size between the EAG and the MAG in regards to average plantar flexion torque. Conclusion： EA and MA have a beneficial effect on plantar flexion muscle strength compared with the control group in healthy population.

Model-based evaluation of policy impacts and the continued COVId-19 risk at long term care facilities

The COVId-19 pandemic severely impacted long-term care facilities resulting in the death of approximately 8%of residents nationwide as of March *** COVId-19 case rates declined and state and county restrictions were lifted in spring 2021,facility managers,local and state health agencies were challenged with defining their own policies moving forward to appropriately mitigate disease *** continued emergence of variants of concern and variable vaccineuptake across facilitieshighlighted the need for a readily available tool that can beemployed at the facility-level to determine best practices for mitigation and ensure resident and staff *** assist leadership in determining the impact of various infection surveillance and response strategies,we developed an agent-based model and an online dashboard interface that simulates COVId-19 infection within congregate care settings under various mitigation *** dashboard quantifies the continued risk for COVId-19 infections within a facility given a designated testing schedule and vaccine *** findings were that choice of COVId-19 diagnostic(*** swab qRT-PCR vs rapid antigen)and testing cadence has less impact on attack rate and staff workdays missed than does vaccination rates among staff and ***,low vaccine uptake among staff at long-term care facilities puts staff and residents at risk of ongoing COVId-19 *** we present our model and dashboard as an exemplar of a tool for state public health officials and facility directors to gain insights from an infectious disease model that can directly inform policy decisions in the midst of a pandemic.

The potato/tomato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli causes serious damage to several solanaceous crops by direct feeding and vectoring Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum,a bacterial *** beam(eBeam)irradiation is an environmentally friendly,chemical-free alternative method that is increasing in use for disinfestation of insect *** hypothesize that this irradiation technology will have detrimental effects on potato psyllid and thus impede its disease *** this end,we explored the effects of eBeam treatment ranging from 50 to 500 Gy on survival,development and reproduction of this *** on psyllids was apparently *** irradiated at 350 Gy,eggs could not hatch,1st instar nymphs failed to emerge,and although a small portion of irradiated 5th instar nymphs survived,the emerged adults were mostly *** in eclosed adults suggests harmful effects of eBeam on *** was seriously impaired when female psyllids were exposed to eBeam at the 5th instar nymphal or young adult stage,presumably due to inability to form *** addition,reciprocal crosses between irradiated and untreated psyllids indicated that female psyllids were more radiosensitive than males to *** together,these findings indicate that eBeam negatively impacted potato psyllid development and reproduction,which would inevitably compromise its disease transmission capacity.A dose of 350 Gy can be considered as a reference dose for effective control of potato psyllids.
