In recent years,a type of extracellular vesicles named exosomes has emerged that play an important role in intercellular communication under physiological and pathological *** nanovesicles (30–150 nm) contain proteins,RNAs and lipids,and their internalization by bystander cells could alter their normal *** review focuses on recent knowledge about exosomes as messengers of neuron-glia communication and their participation in the physiological and pathological functions in the central nervous *** emphasis is placed on the role of exosomes under toxic or pathological stimuli within the brain,in which the glial exosomes containing inflammatory molecules are able to communicate with neurons and contribute to the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative *** the small size and characteristics of exosomes,they can cross the blood-brain barrier and be used as biomarkers and diagnosis for brain disorders and ***,although the application potential of exosome is still limited,current studies indicate that exosomes represent a promising strategy to gain pathogenic information to identify therapeutically targets and biomarkers for neurological disorders and neuroinflammation.

Meningoencephalitis secondary to Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) mainly affects newborns, the elderly and immunocompromised people;there are extremely rare cases in which said infection occurs in immunocompetent individuals. We present the case of a young adult patient without immunocompromise, who developed meningoencephalitis due to L. monocytogenes;This case is exceptional, since it occurred in an individual outside the classic age group, in addition to not having risk factors, which is why it should be considered an atypical causal agent.

Endophytic fungi are being investigated for their ability to create industrially relevant secondary *** recent years,there has been a surge in interest in these fungi as a source of novel enzymes,particularly hydrolytic *** present study investigated the effect of different carbon,organic and inorganic nitrogens on the growth and ligninolytic enzyme production by the endophytic fungus Diaporthe *** fungus was isolated from the leaves of Dillenia indica and analyzed by morpho-molecular *** fungus showed promising results for in vitro production of ligninolytic *** was the most favorable carbon compound for growth among all the carbon compounds *** displayed maximum lignin peroxidase(Lip)activity in fructose(3.5 U/ml),followed by pectin(2.60 U/ml)and glucose(2.53 U/ml).Glucose gave the highest manganese peroxidase(MnP)activity i.e.,6.88 U/ml followed by starch,sucrose and ***,the maximum laccase activity was 44.5 U/ml in *** nitrate and L-asparagine were the best inorganic and organic nitrogen for *** the case of ligninolytic enzyme production,ammonium acetate and ammonium phosphate were the best media for LiP and MnP,whereas laccase production was highest in ammonium nitrate supplemented *** organic nitrogen sources,medium supplemented with DL-tryptophan gave the highest Lip production,whereas MnP and laccase production was observed in the medium containing L-tyrosine and *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report related to the growth and ligninolytic enzyme production by Diaporthe *** findings from the study will assist researchers in improving the production of ligninolytic enzymes by this fungus under in vitro conditions on an industrial scale.

Denitrification-nitrification process in permeable coastal sediments: An investigation on the effect of salinity and nitrate availability using flow-through reactors

Permeable coastal sediments act as a reactive node in the littoral zone,transforming nutrients via a wide range of biogeochemical *** rates are controlled by abiotic factors,e.g.,salinity,temperature or solute ***,a series of incubation experiments,using flow-through reactors,were conducted to simulate the biogeochemical cycling of nitrate (NO3~?) and phosphorus (P) in permeable sediments under differentNO3~?availability conditions (factor I) along a salinity gradient (admixture of river and seawater,factor II).In an oligotrophic scenario,i.e.,unamendedNO3~?concentrations in both river and seawater,sediments acted as a permanent net source ofNO3~?to the water *** peak production rate occurred at an intermediate salinity(20).IncreasingNO3~?availability in river water significantly enhanced netNO3~?removal rates within the salinity range of 0 to 30,likely via the denitrification pathway based on the sediment microbiota *** this scenario,the most active removal was obtained at salinity of *** both river and seawater were spiked with NO3~?,the highest removal rate switched to the highest salinity (36).It suggests the salinity preference of theNO3~?removal pathway by local denitrifiers (e.g.,Bacillus and Paracoccus) and thatNO3~?removal in coastal sediments can be significantly constrained by the dilution relatedNO3~?*** with the obtained variation forNO3~?reactions,permeable sediments acted as a sink of soluble reactive P in all treatments,regardless of salinity andNO3~?input concentrations,indicating a possibility of P-deficiency for coastal water from the intensive cycling in permeable ***,the net production of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in all treatments was positively correlated with the measuredNO3~?reaction rates,indicating that the DOC supply may not be the key factor forNO3~?removal rates due to the consumption by intensive aerobic *** the intensive pr

Bimetallic Cu-In hybrid electrocatalysts are promising noble metal-free catalysts for selective electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reaction(ECO_(2) RR).Most reports show Cu-In catalysts are selective towards CO evolutio ***,few show similarly high selectivity towards *** we fabricated composition tunable Cu-In hydroxides(Cu_xIn_y-OH) by the hydrothermal method and studied their composition effect on electrochemical CO_(2) reduction in detail. We found that the selectivity of CO_(2) reduction products shifted from CO to formate when the content of In increased in the Cu_xIn_y-OH *** Cu rich electrocatalyst mostly produced CO,which could achieve a Faradaic efficiency(FE) to 75.8% at-0.59 V ***(Cu_(76)In_(24)based electrocatalysts).In comparison,the In rich electrocatalysts selectively produced formate,which possessed the FE of formate up to 85% at-1.01 V *** work systematically illustrates the composition effect on hybrid catalysts,and provides insights into the design of highly selective catalysts for ECO_(2) RR.

Objective:To determine the causes of death among human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS) patients as a step to planning strategies to improve mortality from this ***:This study retrospectively analyzed the mortality pattern of adult HIV/AIDS patients in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital from January 2005 to December *** data were obtained from sexually transmitted infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(STI/AIDS) clinic register,admissions and discharge/death registers as well as the patients’ case records and the hospitals monthly mortality *** obtained included age,sex,diagnosis and cause(s) of *** causes of death considered were the direct causes of death,since the originating antecedent cause of death is the same in all the patients,in this case,HIV/*** was analysed using Epi Info ***:The total number of mortalities during the study period was 350,100 were HIV positive representing 28.6%of all *** advanced HIV/AIDS disease was the leading cause of death in our study representing 27.0%,tuberculosis was the single leading cause of deaths in HIV/AIDS patients constituting about 24.0%of *** was followed by sepsis and septicaemia(13.0%), meningitis and encephalitis,and anaemia accounting for 11.0%,while respiratory diseases constituted 5.0%of the mortality *** highest number of deaths occurred in those aged between 21-50 years(82.0%).Conclusions:The study has shown that HIV/AIDS is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in our *** causes of death reflect the varied spectrum of infection and other forms of organ involvement that affect HIV/AIDS *** present dismal situation of adult patients living with HIV/AIDS calls for enhanced strategies to decrease the mortality trend observed in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
