Chronic wounds affect over 6.5 million Americans and are notoriously difficult to *** oxygenation of the wound bed is one of the most critical and treatable wound management factors,but existing oxygenation systems do not enable concurrent measurement and delivery of oxygen in a convenient wearable ***,we developed a low-cost alternative for continuous O 2 delivery and sensing comprising of an inexpensive,paper-based,biocompatible,flexible platform for locally generating and measuring oxygen in a wound *** platform takes advantage of recent developments in the fabrication of flexible microsystems including the incorporation of paper as a substrate and the use of a scalable manufacturing technology,inkjet ***,we demonstrate the functionality of the oxygenation patch,capable of increasing oxygen concentration in a gel substrate by 13%(5ppm)in *** platform is able to sense oxygen in a range of 5–26 *** vivo studies demonstrate the biocompatibility of the patch and its ability to double or triple the oxygen level in the wound bed to clinically relevant levels.

Chronic hepatitis C infection in the USA is a highly morbid condition and current guidelines recommend one-time screening among the birth cohort(1945-1965).Understand-ing strategies to optimize screening can help inform future hepatitis C virus(HCV)screening guidelines.A focused literature search was performed using PubMed and manual abstract review from major hepatology conferences over the past 2 *** search strategy involved using Medical Subject Headings terms for hepatitis C,screening,birth cohort,baby boomers,and *** review was limited to data from the USA.A total of 327 articles were identified and 36 abstracts were included,with studies published between *** including clinician education,electronic medical record alerts,reflex HCV RNA testing,point-of-care testing,multisite(outpatient,inpatient,emergency department,endoscopy suite)initiatives,direct patient solicitation,and utilization of non-physician providers have increased HCV screening ***,broad imple-mentation remains less than *** include lack of patient acceptance to screening and engagement in the HCV care *** Veterans Affairs Healthcare System has achieved higher birth cohort screening rates through an integrated approach requiring high-level engagement by leadership and institutional *** strategies for increasing birth cohort screening have been successful,but overall rates of HCV screening remain *** strat-egies can inform public health efforts to implement emerging national recommendations for expansion of HCV screening to all *** age 18 or older.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) is a truly novel, multifaceted disease that has negatively impacted the lives of many including the pregnant women. We present a 34-year-old pregnant patient at 35 weeks with SARS-COV-2 requiring emergent cesarean section under general endotracheal anesthesia and a prolonged postoperative course in the ICU with multiple end organ function derangement of this disease. After nearly 1 month, she was discharged home. Her baby did not have any manifestations of SARS-COV-2 and was able to go home after 5 days.

Effect of Compositing Precooked Cowpea with Improved Malted Finger Millet on Anti-Nutrients Content and Sensory Attributes of Complementary Porridge

Protein energy malnutrition remains a huge burden in Sub-Saharan Africa. Principally, it is due to children being fed on millet gruels which are high in carbohydrates, and low protein. Moreover, they contain significant amounts of anti-nutrients such as phytates, phenols and tannins. Compositing of malted finger millet flour with other flours has potential for improving the nutritional quality and sensory attributes of these foods. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of compositing malted finger millet flour with cowpea on the anti-nutritional contents and sensory properties of formulated baby weaning food. Mixing selected improved finger millet varieties with precooked cowpea flour was based on WHO recommended levels. There was a significant (p 0.05) reduction in total phenolic content, tannin content and phytic acid by 41%, 50%, and 44%, after compositing with malted finger millet and precooked cowpea at 10.32%, 21.26% and 32.75%, respectively. Cooking process significantly reduced amount of trypsin inhibitors, and other anti-nutrients both in cowpea and complementary porridge. Loadings from principal component analysis (PCA) of 17 sensory attributes of porridge showed that approximately over 80% of the variations in sensory attributes were explained by the first four principal components. Reductions in texture attributes (stickiness and viscosity) and astringency aftertaste corresponded to increase in overall aroma and flavour of the porridge in terms of malty flavour and aroma. Although inclusion of 32.75% precooked cowpea gave the highest reduction in anti-nutrients, it resulted in cooked cowpea flavour. For consumer acceptability, it may require masking by use of commercial flavours. Therefore this work shows that malted finger millet-pre-cooked cowpea have potential to be used in formulating cultural acceptable complementary food.

Background and Aims:Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the most rapidly growing indication for liver transplantation (LT) in the United States and is on a trajectory to become the leading indication for LT in the next *** aimed to study the trends in NASH-related LT among persons born between 1945 and 1965,the baby boomer (BB) ***:We performed a retrospective cohort analysis using population-based data from the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network registry from 2004-2015 to evaluate the birth cohort-specific trends in liver transplant waitlist registrations and liver transplant surgeries in patients with *** stratified our study population into three birth cohorts:1) birth before 1945,2) birth between 1945 and 1965,and 3) birth after ***:The overall rates of NASH-related waitlist registrations and liver transplant surgeries steadily increased from 2004 to 2015 and were reflective of a sharp rise noted in the NASH BB *** 2004 to 2015,the proportion of BB patients with NASH added to LT waitlist demonstrated an incremental growth,60.6% in 2004 versus 83.2% in 2015 (p < 0.01).Among the liver transplant recipients with NASH,the proportion represented by the BB cohort increased from 56.3% in 2004 to 80.0% in 2015 (p < 0.01).Conclusion:We report rising rates of waitlist registration and LT for the indication of *** importantly,the BB sub-cohort was mainly responsible for these alarming trends.

Background: Pregnant women are important stakeholders regarding prenatal ultrasound (US) scanning. Their specific needs and preferences have to be ascertained by healthcare providers to ameliorate service delivery. Objective: To assess the pregnant woman’s expectations during routine prenatal US scan and her perspective ofUSsafety during pregnancy in a Central African obstetric population. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey of consenting pregnant women who reported for routine prenatal US scan using an anonymous questionnaire. A convenient sample of 200 participants was adopted. Results: Thirty-three (16.8%) respondents (on a total of 196) declared they had never done anUSscan. One hundred and eleven (58.4%) on a total of 190 stated that they had not received any information on what ultrasonography is all about. Before theUSscan the respondents would like to receive information on the aim or purpose of ultrasonography, possible inconveniences or risks, and on how to prepare before the scan. The most reported expectations were assurance of the wellbeing of the fetus (58%), gender determination (44.5%) and information on fetal position (20.5%). Thirty-four respondents considered ultrasonography as not perfectly safe for the mother or the “baby”, with the relevant reasons being the use or production of some potentially harmful “rays”. Conclusion: Pregnant women would want to be assured of the wellbeing of the fetus, the gender and position during routine prenatal US. They however need to be informed of its purpose and safety.

Prenatal metal mixture exposure and birth weight: A two-stage analysis in two prospective cohort studies

The understanding of the impact of prenatal exposure to metal mixtures on birth weight is *** aimed to identify metal mixture components associated with birth weight and to determine additional pairwise interactions between metals showing such *** of 18 metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in urine samples collected in the 3rd trimester from a prenatal cohort(discovery;n=1849)and the Healthy baby Cohort(replication;n=7255)in Wuhan,*** the discovery set,we used two penalized regression models,i.e.,elastic net regression for main effects and a lasso for hierarchical interactions,to identify important mixture components associated with birth weight,which were then *** observed that 8 of the 18 measured metals were retained by elastic net regression,with five metals(vanadium,manganese,iron,cesium,and barium)showing negative associations with Z-scores for birth weight and three metals(cobalt,zinc,and strontium)showing positive *** replication set,associations remained significant for vanadium(β=-0.035;95%confidence interval[CI],-0.059 to0.010),cobalt(β=-0.073;95%CI,0.049 to 0.097),and zinc(β=-0.040;95%CI,0.016 to 0.065)after Bonferroni *** additionally identified and replicated a single pairwise interaction between iron and copper exposure on birth weight(P<0.001).Using a two-stage analysis,we identified and replicated individual metals and additional pairwise interactions-associated birth *** approach could be used in other studies estimating the effect of complex mixtures on human health.
