Upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor A/basic fibroblast growth factor(VEGFA/b FGF)expression in the penumbra of cerebral ischemia can increase vascular volume,reduce lesion volume,and enhance neural cell proliferation and differentiation,thereby exerting neuroprotective ***,the beneficial effects of endogenous VEGFA/b FGF are limited as their expression is only transiently *** this study,we generated multilayered nanofiber membranes loaded with VEGFA/b FGF using layer-by-layer self-assembly and electrospinning *** found that a membrane containing 10 layers had an ideal ultrastructure and could efficiently and stably release growth factors for more than 1 *** 10-layered nanofiber membrane promoted brain microvascular endothelial cell tube formation and proliferation,inhibited neuronal apoptosis,upregulated the expression of tight junction proteins,and improved the viability of various cellular components of neurovascular units under conditions of oxygen/glucose ***,this nanofiber membrane decreased the expression of Janus kinase-2/signal transducer and activator of transcription-3(JAK2/STAT3),bax/bcl-2,and cleaved ***,this nanofiber membrane exhibits a neuroprotective effect on oxygen/glucose-deprived neurovascular units by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 pathway.

In the daily application of an iris-recognition-at-a-distance(IAAD)system,many ocular images of low quality are *** the iris part of these images is often not qualified for the recognition requirements,the more accessible periocular regions are a good complement for *** further boost the performance of IAAD systems,a novel end-to-end framework for multi-modal ocular recognition is *** proposed framework mainly consists of iris/periocular feature extraction and matching,unsupervised iris quality assessment,and a score-level adaptive weighted fusion ***,ocular feature reconstruction(OFR)is proposed to sparsely reconstruct each probe image by high-quality gallery images based on proper feature ***,a brand new unsupervised iris quality assessment method based on random multiscale embedding robustness is *** from the existing iris quality assess-ment methods,the quality of an iris image is measured by its robustness in the embedding *** last,the fusion strategy exploits the iris quality score as the fusion weight to coalesce the complementary information from the iris and periocular *** experi-mental results on ocular datasets prove that the proposed method is obviously better than unimodal biometrics,and the fusion strategy can significantly improve therecognition performance.

NEDD8(Neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated protein 8)is an ubiquitin-like protein that is covalently attached to a lysine residue of a protein substrate through a process known as neddylation,catalyzed by the enzyme cascade,namely NEDD8 activating enzyme(E1),NEDD8 conjugating enzyme(E2),and NEDD8 ligase(E3).The substrates of neddylation are categorized into cullins and non-cullin *** of cullins activates CRLs(cullin RING ligases),the largest family of E3 ligases,whereas neddylation of non-cullin substrates alters their stability and activity,as well as subcellular ***,the neddylation pathway and/or many neddylation substrates are abnormally activated or over-expressed in various human diseases,such as metabolic disorders,liver dysfunction,neurodegenerative disorders,and cancers,among ***,targeting neddylation becomes an attractive strategy for the treatment of these *** this review,we first provide a general introduction on the neddylation cascade,its biochemical process and regulation,and the crystal structures of neddylation enzymes in complex with cullin substrates;then discuss how neddylation governs various key biological processes via the modification of cullins and non-cullin *** further review the literature data on dysregulated neddylation in several human diseases,particularly cancer,followed by an outline of current efforts in the discovery of small molecule inhibitors of neddylation as a promising therapeutic ***,few perspectives were proposed for extensive future investigations.

Programmable metasurfaces have received a great deal of attention due to their ability to dynamically manipulate electromagnetic(EM) waves. Despite the rapid growth, most of the existing metasurfaces require manual control to switch among different functionalities, which poses severe limitations on practical applications. Here, we put forth an intelligent metasurface that has self-adaptive EM functionality switching in broadband without human participation. It is equipped with polarization discrimination antennas(PDAs) and feedback components to automatically adjust functionalities for the different incident polarization information.

The friction stir lap welding(FSLW)of metal to polymer is a challenging work due to the unavoidable polymer *** this problem,a novel seal-flow multi-vortex friction stir lap welding(SM-FSLW)technology based on the subversively-designed multi-step pin was put *** 7075 aluminum alloy and short glass fiber-reinforced polyether ether ketone(PEEK)as research subjects,the welding temperature,material flow,formation and tensile shear strength of dissimilar materials lap joint under the SM-FSLW were studied and compared with those under traditional FSLW based on the conical *** multi-step pin rather than the conical pin effectively hindered the polymer overflowing due to the formation of vortexes by the step,thereby attaining a joint with a smooth *** with traditional FSLW,the SMFSLW obtained the higher welding temperature,the more violent material flow and the larger area with high flow velocity,thereby producing the macro-mechanical and micro-mechanical interlockings and then heightening the joint loading *** tensile shear strength of lap joint under SM-FSLW was 27.8% higher than that under traditional *** SM-FSLW technology using the multi-step pin provides an effective way on obtaining a heterogeneous lap joint of metal to polymer with the excellent formation and high strength.

The natural gas hydrate has become one of the most promising future green energy sources on the *** natural gas hydrates mostly exist in the sediments with porous structure, so a solid understanding of the hydrate formation and growth processes in the porous medium is of significance for the exploitation of natural gas hydrate. The micro-packed bed device is one of the efficient microfluidic devices in the engineering field, but it has been rarely used for the hydrate-based research. In this study, a transparent micro-packed bed device filled with glass beads was developed to mimic the porous condition of sediments, and used to in-situ visualize the hydrate formation and growth habits in the pore spaces under both static and dynamic conditions. For the static experiment, two types of hydrate growth patterns in porous medium were observed and identified in the micro-packed bed device, which were the graincoating growth and pore-filling growth. For the dynamic condition, the hydrate formation, growth,distribution habits and hydrate blockage phenomena in the pore spaces were in-situ visually *** impacts of flowrate and subcooling on the pressure variation of the micro-packed bed and the duration of the hydrate growth under dynamic flow condition in pores were in-situ monitored and analyzed. The higher flowrate could result in the faster hydrate growth and more severe blockage in pores, but the effect of subcooling condition might be less significant at the high flowrate.

To control the transition process in a laminar separation bubble(LSb)over an ultra-high load compressor blade at a Re of 1.5×10^(5),the effects of wall heat transfer were considered and numerically investigated by large eddy simulations(LES).Compared with the adiabatic wall condition,the local kinematic viscosity of airflow was reduced by wall cooling;thus the effects of turbulent dissipation on the growth of fluctuations were *** such,the transition occurred much earlier,and the size of LSb became *** the cooled surface,the spanwise vortices deformed much more rapidly and the size of hairpin vortex structures was ***,the rolling-up of 3D hairpin vortices and the ejection and sweeping process very close to the blade surface was ***,the aerodynamic losses of the compressor blade were reduced by 18.2%and 38.4%for the two cooled wall *** results demonstrated the feasibility of wall cooling in controlling the transition within an LSb and reducing the aerodynamic loss of an ultra-highly loaded compressor blade.

The magnetic properties,magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric effects(MCE) of Er_(3)Si_(2)C_(2) compound were investigated based on theoretical calculations and experimental *** on the first principles calculations,the antiferromagnetic(AFM) ground state type in Er_(3)Si_(2)C_(2) compound was predicted and its electronic structure was *** experimental results show that Ei_(3)Si_(2)C_(2) compound is an AFM compound with the Neel temperature(T_(N) of 7 K and undergoes a field-induced firstorder magnetic phase transition from AFM to ferromagnetic(FM) under magnetic fields exceeding 0.6 T at 2 *** magnetic transition process of Er_(3)Si_(2)C_(2) compound was investigated and *** values of the maximum magnetic entropy change(-ΔS_(M)^(max)) and the refrigeration capacity(RC) are 17 J/(kg·K)and 193 J/kg under changing magnetic fields of 0-5 T,*** a potential cryogenic magnetic refrigerant,the Er_(3)Si_(2)C_(2) compound also provides an interesting research medium to study the magnetic phase transition process.

Hybrid deflagration/auto-ignition flame structures coexist in the combustion of advanced *** exergy destruction caused by different irreversible processes under varied flame regimes is thus important for understanding engine *** this study,the flame propagation modes for the premixed DME/air mixtures are numerically investigated under engine-relevant *** entropy generation and exergy destruction characteristics are compared under different flame *** reveal that as the typical premixed flame transition towards auto-ignition front,the exergy destruction from heat conduction and species mass diffusion gradually vanish and are dominated by chemical *** distributions of temperature and species mole fraction in the flame domain are analyzed to clarify the exergy destruction behaviors caused by heat conduction and mass ***,by dividing the DME oxidation process into four stages,the main reaction channels that contribute to the increase in exergy destruction from chemical reaction have been *** is found that the production and consumption of CH_(2)O and HO_(2) radical dominate the exergy destruction behavior during DME *** this basis,the kinetic mechanism of low-temperature chemistry causing greater exergy destruction is ***,low-temperature chemistry leads to significant exergy destruction due to(a)the large irreversibility of itself and(b)(mainly)the enhancement of H_(2)O_(2)loop reactions by low-temperature reaction *** the reduction of combustion irreversibility is promising to be achieved by reasonably regulating the fuel oxidation path.
