We expect organisms to have evolved mechanisms to gather and use the information available within their environments, to steer resource investment decisions toward the traits that will give the greatest fitness returns. Pheromones are social signals, a common purpose of which is to act as indicators of mate presence. Consequently, pheromones have the potential to act as signals to increase or maintain reproductive investment over that of competing life-history traits. In the cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea （Oliver）, females pay costs of maintaining investment in reproduction when there are no males, and males produce pheromones that are known to effect female reproductive outcomes. Whether the pheromones have an influence on resource physiology is unknown. We subjected newly eclosed females to either a synthetic blend of male pheromones or control. We dissected females at 7, 12, 17 or 22 days. We measured apoptosis levels and size of all oocytes within the vitellerium, and measured dry fat body mass. Synthetic male pheromone blend did not have an effect on any measure of female reproductive or somatic resource physiology. Although negative results are always problematic, the success of the synthetic pheromone method in the past suggests that females may be insensitive to male pheromones in the pre-oviposition period, and may rely on mating stimulus rather than pheromone as the cue for oocyte maintenance and growth. Previous studies reporting effects of male pheromones on female reproduction suggest that the period of pheromone sensitivity may be between mating and birth.

Octopamine regulates the function of many tissues and physiological processes in invertebrates. The expression of octopamine receptor genes has been examined in multiple tissue types in several different insect orders. However, little work has addressed this issue in Coleoptera. Most studies characterize individual genes in different tissue types, but here we describe the expression of 6 octopamine receptor genes in thoracic musculature, oviducts, Malpighian tubules, and fat body of female Nicrophorus vespilloides beetles to characterize both different genes and different tissues within a single study. We then compare the gene expression profiles found in this beetle to other insects to examine the extent to which expression profiles are conserved across insects. We also examine the relative involvement of octopamine verses octopamine/tyramine receptors based on receptor gene expression in each tissue to help elucidate if tyramine plays a role in the regulation of these tissues. We find a high degree of overlap in the expression profile of the 6 genes examined in the thoracic muscula^tre, a moderate amount for the oviducts, and divergent profiles for Malpighian tubules and fat body. based on expression difference in receptor subtypes, our results also support the suggestion that tyramine is a biogenic amine with physiological actions separate from octopamine.

Microbiological safety of spices and their interaction with antibiotics:implications for antimicrobial resistance and their role as potential antibiotic adjuncts

Objectives:A study was undertaken to:*** contaminating bacteria on a variety of spices purchased at retail market;*** if spice bacterial enrichments alter the phenotype of 13 bacterial foodborne and clinical pathogens and 1 probiotic organism;and *** if spices can alter antimicrobial activity of seven clinical antibiotics against 16 bacterial foodborne/clinical *** and Methods:Microbiological examination was undertaken employing 27 spice varieties with four antibiotics and 15 bacterial ***:bacteriological contamination levels varied amongst spice varieties,ranging from Kasmin chilli powder(7.5×10^(6)cfu/g;log10^(6).88 cfu/g)to ginger(1.5×10^(4)cfu/g;log_(10)4.18 cfu/g);mean contamination was 1.38×10^(6)cfu/g(log_(10)6.14 cfu/g).Four species within the genus bacillus were identified(bacillus megaterium,bacillus subtilis,bacillus licheniformis,and bacillus cereus).There was no phenotypic difference with the 14 bacteria,with bacterial colony growth/proliferation,pigment production,or with adhesin and mucoid *** of the spice cultures inhibited any of the 14 bacterial species *** the case of doxycycline,amoxicillin,colistin,erythromycin,and piperacillin/tazobactam,the zone of inhibition increased with the inclusion of the 26 spice varieties,suggesting that the spices were interacting synergistically with the antibiotic,thus making the antibiotic more potent against the bacteria ***:This study demonstrates a positive interaction between spices and conventional *** the burden of antimicrobial resistance(AMR)worldwide,but particularly in South Asian countries(India and Pakistan),any food-related innovation that can help maximize the potency of existing antibiotics is to be encouraged and *** specific mechanism as to how spices increase the potency of antibiotics needs to be elucidated,as well as novel food(spice)delivery modalities including novel medicinal foo

Nociception is an important physiological process that detects harmful signals and results in pain perception. In this review, we discuss important experimental evidence involving some TRP ion channels as molecular sensors of chemical, thermal, and mechanical noxious stimuli to evoke the pain and itch sensations. Among them are the TRPA1 channel, members of the vanilloid subfamily （TRPV1, TRPV3, and TRPV4）, and finally members of the melastatin group （TRPM2, TRPM3, and TRPMS）. given that pain and itch are pro-survival, evolutionarily-honed protective mechanisms, care has to be exercised when developing inhibitory/modulatory com- pounds targeting specific pain/itch-TRPs so that physio- logical protective mechanisms are not disabled to a degree that stimulus-mediated injury can occur. Such events have impeded the development of safe and effective TRPV1- modulating compounds and have diverted substantial resources. A beneficial outcome can be readily accom- plished via simple dosing strategies, and also by incorpo- rating medicinal chemistry design features during compound design and synthesis. beyond clinical use, where compounds that target more than one channel might have a place and possibly have advantageous features, highly specific and high-potency compounds will be helpful in mechanistic discovery at the structure-function level.

Effect of glaucoma on identification of bottle cap color in ophthalmic medications

A prospective, nonrandomized, observational trial of 60 glaucoma patients to correlate visual acuity and visual field with ability to distinguish bottle cap color of commonly used ophthalmic medications was conducted. A total of 103 eyes from 60 patients(30 women) were evaluated. The mean logMAR acuity was 0.34±0.54(approximately 20/45 Snellen acuity), average Humphrey Visual Field(HVF) mean deviation was-8.58±8.69 db, mean Ishihara plates(out of 14) were 11.78±4.15, and bottle cap color score(out of 10) was 8.56±2.51. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed an independent correlation of visual acuity(P=0.0137) and Ishihara score(Pbut no significant effect with visual field mean deviation(P>0.05). glaucoma patients with poor visual acuity, but not necessarily advanced visual field loss, are likely to have difficultly identifying the color of their bottle caps. Physicians should be cognizant of this potential issue when reviewing medications with patients.

by the year 2050, the population of the United States is expected to reach over 418 million, while the global population will reach 9.6 billion. To provide safe food and fiber, agriculture must balance pesticide usage against impacts on natural resources. Challenges arise when storms cause runoff to be transported to aquatic receiving systems. Vegetated systems such as drainage ditches and constructed wetlands have been proposed as management practices to alleviate pesticide runoff. Twelve experimental mesocosms （1.3 ±0.71 ± 0.61 m） were filled with sediment and planted with a monoculture of one of three wetland plant species （Typha latifolia, Leersia oryzoides, and Sparganium arnericanurn）. Three mesocosms remained unvegetated to serve as controls. All mesocosms were amended with 9.2 ± 0.8 μg/L, 12 ± 0.4 μg/L, and 3.1 ± 0.2 μg/L of atrazine, metolachlor, and diazinon, respectively, over a 4 hr hydraulic retention time to simulate storm runoff. Following the 4 hr amendment, non-amended water was flushed through mesocosms for an additional 4 hr. Outflow water samples were taken hourly from pre-amendment through 8 hr, and again at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 168 hr post-amendment. L. oryzoides and T. latifolia had mean atrazine, metolachlor, and diazinon retentions from b1%-55% for the first 4 hr of the experiment. Aside from S. arnericanum and atrazine （25% retention）, unvegetated controls had the lowest pesticide retention （17%-28%） of all compared mesocosms. While native aquatic vegetation shows promise for mitigation of pesticide runoff, further studies increasing the hydraulic retention time for improved efficiency should be examined.
