biodegradable starch-based chitosan reinforced composite polymeric films were prepared by casting. The chitosan content in the films was varied from 20% to 80% (w/w). Tensile strength (TS) was improved significantly with the addition of chitosan but elongation at break (Eb %) of the composites decreased. Tensile strength of the composites raised more with the addition of the acacia catechu content in the films varied from 0.05% to 0.2% (w/w). The better thermal stability of this prepared film was confirmed by thermo-gravimetric analysis. Structural characterization was done by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Surface morphologies of the composites were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEm) which suggested sufficient homogenization of starch, chitosan and acacia catechu. Water uptake was found lower for final composites in comparison to starch/chitosan and chitosan films. The satisfactory rate of degradation in the soil is expected that the final composite film is within less than 6 months. The developed films intended to use as the alternative of synthetic non-biodegradable colored packaging films.

The mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of non-magnetic mgTe and ferro-magnetic （Fm） mgo.75 Tm025 Te （Tm = Fe, Co, Ni） in the zinc-blende phase are studied by ab-initio calculations for the first time. We use the generalized gradient approximation functional for computing the structural stability, and mechanical properties, while the modified becke and Johnson local （spin） density approximation （mbJLDA） is utilized for determining the electronic and magnetic properties. by comparing the energies of non-magnetic and Fm calculations, we find that the compounds are stable in the Fm phase, which is confirmed by their structural stabilities in terms of enthalpy of formation. Detailed descriptions of elastic properties of mgo.75Tmo.25Te alloys in the Fm phase are also presented. For electronic properties, the spin- polarized electronic band structures and density of states are computed, showing that these compounds are direct bandgap materials with strong hybridizations of Tm 3d states and Te p states. Further, the ferromagnetism is discussed in terms of the Zener free electron model, RKKY model and double exchange model. The charge density contours in the （110） plane are calculated to study bonding properties. The spin exchange splitting and crystal field splitting energies are also calculated. The distribution of electron spin density is employed in computing the magnetic moments appearing at the magnetic sites （Fe, Co, Ni）, as well as at the non-magnetic sites （mg, Te）. It is found that the p-d hybridization causes not only magnetic moments on the magnetic sites but also induces negligibly small magnetic moments at the non-magnetic sites.

background: Fluorescence imaging is an attractive diagnostic technique for skin tumour demarcation with potential to move to clinical use. bi spectral fluorescence imaging combines skin autofluorescence with δ-aminolaevu- linic acid-induced fluorescence. To evaluate the technique, fluorescence data must be compared with the histopathological extent of the tumour, which is the purpose of the current study. Objectives: To investigate the agreement between bispectral fluorescence images and the histopathological tumour boundary of ill-defined basal cell carcinomas (bCCs). After fluorescence imaging the tumours were removed using mohs micrographic surgery (mmS) to obtain histopathological maps of the tumour boundaries. methods: Twelve patients with aggressive bCC of mean diameter 16 mm (range 5-32) in the face were included in the study. The patients were subjected to bispectral fluorescence imaging within the 2 months prior to mmS. The fluorescence images and histopathological maps were aligned using image warping. Results: Five patients (42%) showed good agreement with the histopathological mapping and the remaining seven patients (58%) showed partial agreement. bispectral investigation combining auto-fluorescence with protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence generally yielded better agreement with the histopathological boundaries of the tumours compared with using only the PpIX fluorescence. Conclusions: In this preliminary study the fluorescence has been compared with the histopathological tumour boundaries. The result implies that the technique can be applied as a useful tool for indicating tumour boundary of aggressive bCCs. Further refinement is needed to be able to indicate the exact tumour border.

The Role of Zinc in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients on Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review

Objective: Zinc has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and also for its immune function in end stage renal disease patients. The aim of this review is to clarify whether there is a relationship between zinc levels and ESRD patients in hemodialysis. methodology: A search through LILACS and mEDLINE database using the keywords “zinc”, “chronic kidney disease” and “hemodialysis” was performed. Articles in English and Portuguese performed in humans with the previous words were selected. Studies with subjects younger than 18 years of age were excluded. moreover, exclusion criteria included patients with absence of diagnosis of end stage renal disease and not in hemodialysis;patients treated with peritoneal dialysis, absence of abstract available, absence of clear association between zinc deficiency and worse prognosis. Results: The search found a total of 214 articles. A total of 44 publications were selected after appliance of exclusion criteria. Conclusion: Zinc deficiency is highly prevalent, and it not only showed influence on inflammatory and immunological processes, but also interfered with metabolism and other systems. Zinc supplementation was considered positive. In summary, lower zinc levels are related to end stage renal disease patients in hemodialysis and supplementation seems to be a promising approach in such cases.

Air Pollution is one of the main contaminants in industrial cities like Tehran, but it depends on many factors. One of the most important factors is wind field. Wind field shows how the pollutants transfer by convective mechanism. Tehran as the most polluted city of Iran (or may be middle East) locates in a mountainous situation and is surrounded from two sides by high mountains and from two sides by desert. Therefore, the topography of Greater Tehran Area is so complex and needs more attention. We have studied the air pollution in Tehran from this point of view in this paper and used mEmO software for simulation of wind field in this area. The results show good agreement with experimental observations and show stronger wind from south to north and west-south to east-north in days and then night in reverse direction. It causes that the pollutants remain at urban area and the concentrations of pollutants reach to a serious level.

Disturbances in bone mineralization are frequent in cystic fibrosis but few st udies have focused on the use of biphosphonates in this indication, and none on the use of oral etidronate. We report our experience using this latter treatment . methods. -The study was retrospective and included five children and three ad ults with cystic fibrosis (six males and two females) aged seven to 30:years wit h Z-scores for lumbar bone density lower than-2:SD after one year of calcium ( 1:g/day) and vitamin D (900:UI/day and 300:000:UI/6:months) supplementation. All were treated during one year with etidronate: four courses of 15:days (one cour se per trimester) with doses ranging from 4 to 8:mg/kg per day. Calcium and vita min D supplementation was continued between the etidronate treatment course. Tot al body and lumbar bone mineral density (bmD) were measured three times: at the beginning and the end of the year of calcium and vitamin D supplementation and at the end of the year of supplementation plus the four courses of etidronate treatment. Resu lts. -The increase in bmD in absolute value (g/cm2) and in Z-score was signifi cantly higher (P mbined supplementation and etidron ate treatment (total body g/cm2: 3 ±1%, Z-score: 2 ±1%and lumbar spine g/cm 2: 6 ±5%, Z-score: 3 ±4%) than after supplementation alone (total body g/cm 2:-1 ±3%, Z-score:-4 ±3%and lumbar spine g/cm2:-1 ±3%, Z-score:-4 ± 4%). Supplementation alone improved the total bmD in only one patient and the l umbar bmD in three, whereas after etidronate treatment the total and lumbar bmD were improved in the eight patients. None of the patients presented with side ef fects that could be attributed to the treatment. Conclusion. -Oral etidronate t reatment is well-tolerated and capable of improving bone mineralization in pati ents with cystic fibrosis. Further work will be necessary to determine the optim al dosage and the optimal frequency for the treatment series.

The gray mouse lemur（microcebus murinus） is one of few primate species that is able to enter daily torpor or prolonged hibernation in response to environmental stresses. With an emerging significance to human health research, lemurs present an optimal model for exploring molecular adaptations that regulate primate hypometabolism. A fundamental challenge is how to effectively regulate energy expensive cellular processes（e.g., transcription and translation） during transitionsto/from torpor without disrupting cellular homeostasis. One such regulatory mechanism is reversible posttranslational modification of selected protein targets that offers fine cellular control without the energetic burden. This study investigates the role of phosphorylation and/or acetylation in regulating key factors involved in energy homeostasis（AmP-activated protein kinase, or AmPK, signaling pathway）, m RNA translation（eukaryotic initiation factor 2a or e IF2 a, eukaryotic initiation factor 4E or e IF4 E, and initiation factor 4E binding protein or 4EbP）, and gene transcription（histone H3） in six tissues of torpid and aroused gray mouse lemurs. Our results indicated selective tissue-specific changes of these regulatory proteins. The relative level of Thr172-phosphorylated AmPKa was significantly elevated in the heart but reduced in brown adipose tissue during daily torpor, as compared to the aroused lemurs, implicating the regulation of AmPK activity during daily torpor in these tissues. Interestingly, the levels of the phosphorylated e IFs were largely unaltered between aroused and torpid animals. Phosphorylation and acetylation of histone H3 were examined as a marker for transcriptional regulation. Compared to the aroused lemurs, level of Ser10-phosphorylated histone H3 decreased significantly in white adipose tissue during torpor, suggesting global suppression of gene transcription. Current Vegetation Pattern along Glacial Landscape in Central (Garhwal) Himalaya, India

Current vegetation patterns, biodiversity and adaptation of plants were studied during 1998-2001 in glacial landscape of Chaurabari situated above Kedarnath （30° 44＇ N- 79° 07＇ E; 3,000- 6,000 m） in Central Himalaya. Landscape was identified into different zones on account of the vegetation status, glacial features, geomorphology and altitudes. Cold environment with heavy snowfall, frost hailstorm and dense frost characterizes the study area Predominance of the soda rich feldspars indicates soda enrichment; orthoclase, microcline weathering and alternation would have contributed potash to the soil. The increasing severity of the environment as we ascend from timberline to snowline leads to progressive decline in the abundance and diversity of the plant species. The diversity of the higher plants decrease, while the diversity of microflora increase from alpine zone to snowline zone. Highly opulent and diverse flora with beautiful, delicate herbs occupy the alpine zone, but some specialized groups of the plants, particularly high energetic and cold resistant species reside in glacial environment. Asteraceae, Rananculaceae, Primulaceae, Rosaceae, Apiaceae and Ericaceae are the pioneer angiospermic families, while Anaphalis triplinervis, A. royleana, Androsacce sarmentosa, Cotoneaster rotundifolius,Lonicera myrtillus, Cassiope fastigiata, Gaultheria trichophylla and Erigeron multiradiatus are the pioneer species, which have invaded in glacial environment. Through its nature, alpine glacial ecotone can be seen easily due to environmental and edaphic differences.
