Glutathione peroxidase mimicry of diphenyl diselenide: Plausible contribution of proteins’ thiols

Organoseleniums are a class of compounds attracting attention across the globe owing to their Glutathione peroxidase(GPx)mimicry,which confers on them a strong antioxidant *** diselenide(DPDS)is an Organoselenium whose GPx mimetic property has been suggested to rely on the oxidation of non-protein or protein thiols critical to the activities of some sulfhydryl *** study,therefore investigated the GPx mimic/antioxidant property of DPDS as well as the role of thiols of two key sulfhydryl enzymes,cerebral Na^(+)/K^(+)-ATPase(sodium pump)and hepatic delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase(δ-ALAD)in the GPx mimicry of *** Wistar rats were euthanized,and the liver and brain were removed and used to assay for the effect of DPDS on lipid peroxidation induced by two prooxidants[Fe2^(+)(10μM)and H2O2,(1 mM)]as well as the activities of the sulfhydryl *** results revealed that DPDS profoundly(P<0.05)counteracted Fe2^(+)and H2O2-induced lipid peroxidation in the rats’hepatic and cerebral ***,the results of assay systems for lipid peroxidation and sodium pump revealed that DPDS inhibited Na^(+)/K^(+)-ATPase and lipid peroxidation in the brain tissue homogenates in the same reaction system.A similar result was obtained in the assay system for lipid peroxidation and hepaticδ-ALAD as DPDS simultaneously inhibited the enzyme’s activity and lipid *** suggests that the GPx mimetic property of DPDS may be linked to the enzymes’loss of activity,which further validates the suggestions that the enzymes’inhibition,as well as the antioxidant action of DPDS,rely on the oxidation of critical thiols of the ***,the GPx mimicry of DPDS should be investigated in the presence of thiol-blocking or oxidizing agents in biological systems in order to further ascertain the role of protein thiols.

Microalgae are bioindicators for risk assessment and development of environmental regulations for heavy metals and other emerging toxicants in marine environments. In this study, we evaluated the toxic effects of the heavy metals Cd, Pb, and Ni, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals （EDCs） polychlorinated biphenyl （PCB）, endosulfan （ES）, and metolachlor （MC） on the marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum. Toxicity assays showed that cell count and chlorophyll a level decreased with increased toxicant concentrations in all cases. EC 50 -72 h for the test chemicals were as follows: Cd, 2.78 mg L -1;Pb, 3.49 mg L -1;Ni, 0.64 mg L -1;PCB, 8.0 μg L -1;ES, 0.025 mg L -1;MC, 0.079 mg L -1 . These data suggested that the sensitivity pattern of P. minimum to heavy metals was Ni ＞ Cd ＞ Pb;three EDCs were mostly sensitive, and the PCB was highly toxic. This study provides essential data on the toxic effects of heavy metals and newly introduced EDCs on marine dinoflagellate.

In silico antiplasmodial effects of phytocompounds derived from Andrographis paniculata on validated drug targets of different stages of Plasmodium falciparum

Experimental and Computational Study of the Microwave Absorption Properties of Recycled α-Fe2O3/OPEFB Fiber/PCL Multi-Layered Composites

The aim of this study was to fabricate multi-layered recycled α-Fe2O3/OPEFB fiber/PCL composites for microwave absorbing applications in the 1 - 4 GHz frequency range. The multi-layered composites were 6 mm thick and each consisted of a 2 mm thick layer of recycled α-Fe2O3/PCL composites at various loadings (5 wt% - 25 wt%) of 16.2 nm recycled α-Fe2O3 nanofiller, placed between two layers of 2 mm thick OPEFB fiber/PCL composites blended at a fixed ratio of 7:3. The real (ε') and imaginary (ε") components of the relative complex permittivity were measured using the open-ended coaxial probe technique and the values obtained were applied as inputs for the Finite Element Method to calculate the reflection coefficient magnitudes from which the reflection loss (RL) properties were determined. Both ε' and ε" increased linearly with recycled α-Fe2O3 nanofiller content and the values of ε' varied between 3.0 and 3.9 while the ε" values ranged between 0.26 and 0.64 within 1 - 4 GHz. The RL (dB) showed the most prominent values within the 1.38 - 1.46 GHz band with a minimum of -38 dB attained by the 25 wt% composite. Another batch of minimum values occurred in the 2.39 - 3.49 GHz range with the lowest of -25 dB at 2.8 GHz. The recycled α-Fe2O3/OPEFB fiber/PCL multi-layered composites are promising materials that can be engineered for solving noise problems in the 1 - 4 GHz range.

The recent mpox outbreak(in 2022e2023)has different clinical and epidemiological features compared with previous outbreaks of the *** this outbreak,sexual contact was believed to be the primary transmission route of the *** addition,the community of men having sex with men(MSM)was disproportionately affected by the *** population is also disproportionately affected by HIV *** that both diseases can be transmitted sexually,the endemicity of HIV,and the high sexual behavior associated with the MSM community,it is essential to understand the effect of the two diseases spreading simultaneously in an MSM ***,we aim to understand the potential effects of HIV on an mpox outbreak in the MSM *** develop a mechanistic mathematical model of HIV and mpox *** model incorporates the dynamics of both diseases and considers HIV treatment with antiretroviral therapy(ART).In addition,we consider a potential scenario where HIV infection increases susceptibility to mpox,and investigate the potential impact of this mechanism on mpox *** analysis shows that HIV can facilitate the spread of mpox in an MSM population,and that HIV treatment with ART may not be sufficient to control the spread of mpox in the ***,we showed that a moderate use of condoms or reduction in sexual contact in the population combined with ART is beneficial in controlling mpox *** on our analysis,it is evident that effective control of HIV,specifically through substantial ART use,moderate condom compliance,and reduction in sexual contact,is imperative for curtailing the transmission of mpox in an MSM population and mitigating the compounding impact of these intertwined epidemics.

A 5G Perspective of an SDN-Based Privacy-Preserving Scheme for IoT Networks

The ever-increasing needs of Internet of Things networks (IoTn) present considerable issues in computing complexity, security, trust, and authentication, among others. This gets increasingly more challenging as technology advances, and its use expands. As a consequence, boosting the capacity of these networks has garnered widespread attention. As a result, 5G, the next phase of cellular networks, is expected to be a game-changer, bringing with it faster data transmission rates, more capacity, improved service quality, and reduced latency. However, 5G networks continue to confront difficulties in establishing pervasive and dependable connections amongst high-speed IoT devices. Thus, to address the shortcomings in current recommendations, we present a unified architecture based on software-defined networks (SDNs) that provides 5G-enabled devices that must have complete secrecy. Through SDN, the architecture streamlines network administration while optimizing network communications. A mutual authentication protocol using elliptic curve cryptography is introduced for mutual authentication across certificate authorities and clustered heads in IoT network deployments based on IoT. Again, a dimensionality reduction intrusion detection mechanism is introduced to decrease computational cost and identify possible network breaches. However, to leverage the method’s potential, the initial module's security is reviewed. The second module is evaluated and compared to modern models.

Assessment of the Impact of Solid Waste Dumpsites on Some Surface Water Systems in the Accra Metropolitan Area, Ghana

Water samples from four water bodies that flow through some solid waste dump sites in the Accra metropolitan area of Ghana were analysed over a period of six months for Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn contents;coliform bacteria and helminth eggs. Other water quality parameters such as BOD, DO, suspended solids and turbidity were also assessed. Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Cu were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Faecal coliforms, total coliforms and helminth eggs were determined by the membrane filtration (MF) method. The water samples contain various levels of Cd, Pb and Mn;Zn and Cu levels were low and found to be below the detection levels of the instrument in most cases. Helminth egg counts in water samples were high;an indication that the water bodies were polluted with pathogens. It has been observed that the major sources of pollutants into the water bodies were organic waste as well as coliform bacteria derived from these waste dumps. The elevated levels of bacteria make the water bodies unsafe for both primary and secondary contacts.

Physico-chemical Characteristics of a Gold Mining Tailings Dam Wastewater

The study was conducted on the status of the quality of wastewater from the tailings dam of Central Africa Gold Limited in Bibiani, Ghana, to ascertain the level of contamination of the wastewater. The tailings dam stores process effluent from the gold extraction plant. Wastewater samples taken from the tailings dam were analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics. Arsenic, iron and cyanide were identified as the major pollutants in the tailings dam wastewater with average concentrations of 4.5, 25.2 and 11.1 mg.L1, respectively. Arsenic, iron and free CN （cyanide） concentrations in the process effluent exceeded the Ghana EPA discharge limits of 0.2, 2 and 0.2 ***, respectively. High conductivity, total dissolved solids, sulphate and ammonium were found in the wastewater studied. The tailings dam serves as a natural reservoir that removes most of the total suspended solids and the turbidity, resulting in the improvement in the aesthetic appeal of the wastewater. Nonetheless, arsenic, iron and cyanide concentrations were still high and hence the wastewater cannot be discharged into the environment without prior treatment.

Gender Classification from Fingerprint Using Hybrid CNN-SVM

Gender classification is used in numerous applications such as biometrics,criminology,surveillance,HCI,and business *** biometric factors like gait,face,hand shape,and iris have been used to classify people into genders,the majority of research has focused on facial traits due to their more recognizable *** research employs fingerprints to classify gender,with the intention of being relevant for future *** methods for gender classification utilizing fingerprints have been presented in the literature,including ANN,KNN,Naive Bayes,the Gaussian mixture model,and deep learning-based *** these classifiers have shown good classification accuracy,gender classification remains an unexplored field of study that necessitates the development of new approaches to enhance recognition accuracy,computation,and running *** this paper,a CNN-SVM hybrid framework for gender classification from fingerprints is proposed,where preprocessing,feature extraction,and classification are the three main *** main goal of this study is to use CNN to extract fingerprint *** features are then sent to an SVM classifier to determine *** hybrid model’s performance measures are examined and compared to those of the conventional CNN *** a CNN-SVM hybrid model,the accuracy of gender classification based on fingerprints was 99.25%.
