Mapping favorable groundwater potential recharge zones using a GIS-based analytical hierarchical process and probability frequency ratio model:A case study from an agro-urban region of Pakistan

In Punjab(Pakistan),the increasing population and expansion of land use for agriculture have severely exploited the regional groundwater *** pumping has resulted in a rapid decline in the level of the water table as well as its *** management practices and artificial recharge are needed for the development of sustainable groundwater *** study proposes a methodology to delineate favorable groundwater potential recharge zones(FPRI)by integrating maps of groundwater potential recharge index(PRI)with the DRASTIC-based groundwater vulnerability index(VI).In order to evaluate both indexes,different thematic layers corresponding to each index were overlaid in *** the overlay analysis,the weights(for various thematic layers)and rating values(for sub-classes)were allocated based on a review of published *** were then normalized and modified using the analytical hierarchical process(AHP)and a frequency ratio model *** evaluating PRI and FPRI,these maps were validated using the area under the curve(AUC)*** PRI map indicates that 53%of the area assessed exists in very low to low recharge zones,22%in moderate,and 25%in high to excellent potential recharge *** VI map indicates that 38%of the area assessed exists in very low to low vulnerability,33%in moderate,and 29%in high to very high vulnerability *** FPRI map shows that the central region of Punjab is moderately-to-highly favorable for recharge due to its low vulnerability and high recharge *** the validation process,it was found that the AUC estimated with modified weights and rating values was 79%and 67%,for PRI and VI indexes,*** AUC was less when evaluated using original weights and rating values taken from published *** of favorable groundwater potential recharge zones are helpful for planning and implementation of wells and hydraulic structures in this region.

Prevalence of Dental Fluorosis in Mianwali and Mardan Districts

This study was conducted to assess the level of dental flourosis and Decaying, Missing, Filled Tooth (DMFT) of selected patients, in district Mardan village Rustam and District Mianwali village Harnoli. Study was conducted among people of age 10 - 60 years. The regions of Rustam and Harnoli are known to have high value of fluoride in drinking water. A cross sectional study was conducted among the subjects and the grade of fluorosis was calculated according to Deans Fluorosis Index. DMFT of each subject was also calculated. Total of 100 subjects were selected by simple random sampling technique among the population of Rustam and Harnoli and they were observed for the extent of fluorosis they had along with the number of decayed, missing and filled teeth they had Most of the population uses underground water, the water people commonly used was collected and was tested for amount of fluoride. The results show that there is a strong relationship between fluoride level and extent of fluorosis. Populations of both areas have dental fluorosis due to high concentration of fluoride in drinking water and also comparatively low DMFT because fluoride has caries protective effect.

Shocks and Solitons in Ultradense Degenerate Electron-Positron-Ion Plasmas

The formation and propagation of shocks and solitons are investigated in an unmagnetized, ultradense plasma containing degenerate Fermi gas of electrons and positrons, and classical ion gas by employing Thomas-Fermi model. For this purpose, a deformed Korteweg-de Vries-Berger （dKdVB） equation is derived using the reductive perturbative technique for cold, adiabatic, and isothermal ions. Localized analytical solutions of dKdVB equation in planar geometry are obtained for dispersion as well as dissipation dominant cases. For nonplanar （cylindrical and spherical） geometry, time varying numerical shock wave solution of dKdVB equation is found. Its dispersion dominant case leading to the soliton solution is also discussed. The effect of ion temperature, positron concentration and dissipation is found significant on these nonlinear structures. The relevance of the results to the systems of scientific interest is pointed out.

On the gauge dependence of scalar induced secondary gravitational waves during radiation and matter domination eras

We revisit the vital issue of gauge dependence in the scalar-induced secondary gravitational waves(SIGWs), focusing on the radiation domination(RD) and matter domination(MD) eras. The energy density spectrum is the main physical observable in such induced gravitational waves. For various gauge choices, there has been a divergence in the energy density, ?GW, of *** calculate SIGWs in diferent gauges to quantify this divergence to address the gauge-dependent problem. In our previous studies, we had found that the energy density diverges in the polynomial power of conformal time(e.g., η^(6) in uniform density gauge). We try to fix this discrepancy by adding a counter-term that removes the fictitious terms in secondary tensor perturbations. We graphically compare the calculations in various gauges and also comment on the physical origin of the observed gauge dependence.

Detection of Lung Nodules on X-ray Using Transfer Learning and Manual Features

The well-established mortality rates due to lung cancers,scarcity of radiology experts and inter-observer variability underpin the dire need for robust and accurate computer aided diagnostics to provide a second *** this end,we propose a feature grafting approach to classify lung cancer images from publicly available National Institute of Health(NIH)chest X-Ray dataset comprised of 30,805 unique *** performance of transfer learning with pre-trained VGG and Inception models is evaluated in comparison against manually extracted radiomics features added to convolutional neural network using custom *** classification with both approaches,Support VectorsMachines(SVM)are *** results from the 5-fold cross validation report Area Under Curve(AUC)of 0.92 and accuracy of 96.87%in detecting lung nodules with the proposed *** is a plausible improvement against the observed accuracy of transfer learning using Inception(79.87%).The specificity of allmethods is>99%,however,the sensitivity of the proposed method(97.24%)surpasses that of transfer learning approaches(<67%).Furthermore,it is observed that the true positive rate with SVM is highest at the same false-positive rate in experiments amongst Random Forests,Decision Trees,and K-Nearest Neighbor ***,the proposed approach can be used in clinical and research environments to provide second opinions very close to the experts’intuition.

Forest plays a vital role in the global biogeochemical cycles through a high rate of carbon sequestration and harboring ***,local species diversity is declining while also becoming increasingly homogenized across *** eff ects of local biotic processes(e.g.,speciesα-diversity and stand structural heterogeneity)and environmental factors on aboveground biomass(AGB)have been widely tested,there is a huge knowledge gap for the eff ect of regional biotic processes(i.e.,taxonomic and functionalβ-diversity)in ***,we hypothesized that regional and local environmental factors along with biotic processes jointly regulate AGB through species shifts in tropical *** piecewise structural equation modeling(pSEM),we linked climatic water availability,soil fertility,stand structural heterogeneity(either tree DBH inequality,height inequality,or stand density),speciesα-diversity,taxonomic or functionalβ-diversity(and its two components;β-turnover andβ-richness),and AGB across 189 inventory plots in tropical forests of Sri *** fertility and climatic water availability shaped local and regional biotic *** structural heterogeneity promoted speciesα-diversity but declinedβ-diversity(but increasedβ-taxonomic turnover).Speciesα-diversity and stand structural heterogeneity promoted AGB whereas taxonomic and functionalβ-diversity declined(butβ-taxonomic turnover increased)*** relationships of AGB with speciesα-diversity andβ-diversity varied from signifi cant to nonsignifi cant positive depending on the specifi c combinations of stand structural heterogeneity metrics *** study shows that local biotic processes could increase AGB due to the local and regional niche complementarity eff ect whereas the regional biotic processes could restrict AGB due to the regional selection or functional redundancy eff ect under favorable environmental *** argue that biotic homogenization,as well as drought conditions,ma
