AIM： To review 11 patients with parasitic cysts of the liver, who were treated by hepatic Iobectomy using the liver hanging maneuver （LHM）.METHODS： Between January 2003 and June 2006, we retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent surgical treatment due to parasitic cysts of the liver, at the Ege University School of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. Of these, the patients who underwent hepatic lobectomy using the LHM were reviewed and evaluated for surgical treatment outcome.RESULTS： Over a three-year period, there were 102 patients who underwent surgical treatment for parasitic cysts of the liver. Of these, 11 （10%） patients with parasitic cysts of the liver underwent hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM. Presenting symptoms were abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and cholangitis. Cyst locations were as follows： right lobe filled with cyst, 7 （63%）; segmental location, 2 （18%）; and multiple locations, 2 patients （18%）. All patients underwent hepatic Iobectomy with an anterior approach using the LHM. The intraoperative blood transfusion requirement was one unit for 3 patients and two units for one patient. Postoperative complications included pulmonary atelectasy （2, 18%） and pleural effusion （2, 18%）. No significant morbidity or mortality was observed.CONCLUSION： We concluded that hepatic Iobectomy using the LHM should be considered, not only for hepatic tumors or donor hepatectomy, but also to treat parasitic cysts of the liver.

Currently, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an undoubtfully optimal treatment of cholelithiasis. What about performing this procedure on a patient with situs inversus totalis and what are the difficulties of this operation for a right-handed surgeon? We presented a 35-year-old man with unknown situs inversus totalis who was admitted with epigastric pain and digestive problems. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen confirmed the diagnosis of a gallstone. Besides, the liver and gallbladder were on the left side and the spleen was on the right. All systems were left-right reversal as mirror image in all diagnostic studies. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was safely performed, despite of difficulties of situs inversus. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 1. It should be considered that existence of other anomalies may easily cause uninvited injuries. In the patients with situs inversus, laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be safely managed by an experienced surgeon through laparoscopy, and also hepatobiliary surgery.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of a novel intraoperative diagnostic technique for patients with preliminary diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP).METHODS: Patients with pancreatic surgery were reviewed to identify those who received a preliminary diagnosis of AIP between January 2010 and January 2014. The following data were collected prospectively for patients with a pathological diagnosis of AIP: clinical and demographic features, radiological and operative findings, treatment procedure, and intraoperative capillary refill time(CRT) in the pancreatic ***: Eight patients(six males, two females; mean age: 51.4 years) met the eligibility criteria of pathologically confirmed diagnosis. The most frequent presenting symptoms were epigastric pain and weight loss. The most commonly conducted preoperative imaging studies were computed tomography and endoscopic retrograde pancreaticodoudenography. The most common intraoperative macroscopic observations were mass formation in the pancreatic head and diffuse hypervascularization in the pancreatic bed. All patients showed decreased CRT(median value: 0.76 s, range: 0.58-1.35). One-half of the patients underwent surgical resection and the other half received medical treatment without any further surgical intervention. CONCLUSION: This preliminary study demonstrates a novel experience with measurement of CRT in the pancreatic bed during the intraoperative evaluation of patients with AIP.

Castleman's disease(CD), also known as angiofolicular lymph node hyperplasia, is a rare heterogenous group of lymphoproliferative disorders. Histologically, it can be classified as hyaline vascular type, plasma cell type, or mixed type. Clinically two different subtypes of the CD are present: Unicentric and multicentric. Unicentric CD is generally asymptomatic and associated with hyaline vascular type, and its diagnoses depend on the localized lymphadenopathy on examination or imaging studies. However, multicentric CD presents with generalized lymphadenopathy and systemic symptoms including malaise, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and it is associated with the plasma cell type and mix type. Herein, we report a patient with unicentric CD of the plasma cell type without systemic symptoms, who developed end stage renal failure caused by amyloidosis 6 years after onset of CD.

AIM: Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive oxidant synthesized from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NO may cause injury through the generation of potent radicals. Nw-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) is a non-selective inhibitor of NOS. We aimed to evaluate whether L-NAME treatment had protective effects against oxidative stress in rats intragastrically fed with ethanol during a 4 wk-period. METHODS: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into 3 equal groups: group 1 (control group-isocaloric dextrose was given), group 2 (6 g/kg·d ethanol-induced group) and group 3 (both ethanol 6 g/kg·d and L-NAME 500 mg/L in drinking water-given group). Animals were sacrificed at the end of 4 wk-experimental period, and intracardiac blood and liver tissues were obtained. Biochemical measurements were performed both in plasma and in homogenized liver tissues. Alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), malondialdehyde (MDA), NO, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) levels were measured by spectrophotometry. RESULTS: ALT and AST in group 2 (62 U/L and 128 U/L, respectively) were higher than those in group 1 (24 U/L and 38 U/L) and group 3 (37 U/L and 81 U/L) (P<0.001 for both). Plasma and tissue levels of MDA in group 2 (4.66 μmol/L and 0.55 μmol/mg protein) were higher than in group 1 (2.65 μmol/L and 0.34 nmol/mg protein) and group 3 (3.43 μmol/L and 0.36 nmol/mg protein) (P<0.001 for both). Plasma and liver tissue levels of NO in group 2 (54.67 μmol/L and 586.50 nmol/mg protein) were higher than in group 1 (34.67 μmol/L and 435.33 nmol/mg protein) and group 3 (27.50 μmool/L and 412.75 nmol/mg protein ) (P<0.001 for both). Plasma and liver tissue SOD activities in group 2 (15.25 U/mL and 5.38 U/ mg protein, respectively) were lower than in group 1 (20.00 U/mL and 8.13 U/ mg protein) and group 3 (19.00 U/mL and 6.93 U/ mg protein) (P<0.001 for both). AIM： To investigate the individual and combined effects of allopurinol and hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） therapy on biochemical and histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and bacterial translocation （BT） in the experimental rat acute pancreatitis （AP）. METHODS： Eighty-five Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. Fifteen of the eighty-five rats were used as controls （sham, Group I ）. AP was induced via intraductal taurocholate infusion in the remaining seventy rats. Rats that survived to induction of acute necrotizing pancreatitis were randomized into four groups. Group H received saline, Group m allopurinol, Group IV allopurinol plus HBO and Group v HBO alone. Serum amylase levels, oxidative stress parameters, BT and histopathologic scores were determined. RESULTS： Serum amylase levels were lower in Groups Ⅲ, Ⅳ and v compared to Group H （974 ± 110, 384 ± 40, 851 ＋ 56, and 1664 Ⅳ 234 U/L, respectively, P 〈 0.05, for all）. Combining the two treatment optionsrevealed significantly lower median [25-75 percentiles] histopathological scores when compared to individual administrations （13 [12.5-15] in allopurinol group, 9.5 [7-11.75] in HBO group, and 6 [4.5-7.5] in combined group, P 〈 0.01）. Oxidative stress markers were significantly better in all treatment groups compared to the controls. Bacterial translocation into the pancreas and mesenteric lymph nodes was lower in Groups m, iV and v compared to Group H （54%, 23%, 50% vs 100% for translocation to pancreas, and 62%, 46%, 58% vs 100% for translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes, respectively, P 〈 0.05 for all）. CONCLUSION： The present study confirms the benefit of HBO and allopurinol treatment when administered separately in experimental rat AP. Combination of these treatment options appears to prevent progression of pancreatic injury parameters more effectively.

This study aims to draw an exact boundary for microstructural and mechanical behaviors in terms of pulsed plasma nitriding *** pulsed plasma nitriding treatment was applied to AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel at different temperatures and *** reveal that nitriding depth increased as process temperature and duration *** nitriding depth remarkably increased at 475℃for 8 h and at 550℃for 4 *** austenite structure was transformed into a metastable nitrogen-oversaturated body-centered tetragonal expanded austenite(S-phase)during low-temperature plasma *** S-phase was converted to CrN precipitation at 475℃for 8 h and at 550℃for 4 *** hardness and fatigue limit increased through plasma nitriding regardless of process *** best surface hardness and fatigue limit were obtained at 550℃for 4 h because of the occurrence of CrN precipitation.

Radioluminescence(RL)behaviour of erbium-doped yttria nanoparticles(Y2O_(3):Er^(3+)NPs)which were produced by sol-gel method was reported for future scintillator *** with dopant rates of 1 at%,5 at%,10 at%and 20 at%Er were produced and calcined at 800℃,and effect of increased calcination temperature(1100℃)on the RL behaviour was also reported.X-ray diffraction(XRD)results showed that all phosphors had the cubic Y2O_(3) bixbyite-type *** lattice parameters,crystallite sizes(CS),and lattice strain values were calculated by Cohen-Wagner(C-W)and Williamson-Hall(W-H)methods,***,the optimum solubility value of the Er^(3+)dopant ion in the Y2O_(3) host lattice was calculated to be approximately 4 at%according to Vegard’s law,which was experimentally obtained from the 5 at%Er^(3+)ion containing *** peak shifts in XRD patterns and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)analyses confirmed that Er^(3+)dopant ions were successfully incorporated into the Y2O_(3) host ***-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)results verified the average CS values and agglomerated NPs morphologies were *** electron microscopy(SEM)results showed the neck formation between the particles due to increased calcination *** a result of the RL measurements under a Cu KαX-ray radiation(wavelength,λ=0.154 nm)source with 50 kV and 10 mA beam current,it was determined that the highest RL emission belonged to 5 at%Er doped *** the RL emission spectrum,the emission peaks were observed in the wavelength ranges of 510-575 nm(2H11/2,4S3/2-4I15/2;green emission)and 645-690 nm(4F9/2-4I15/2;red emission).The emission peaks at 581,583,587,593,601,611 and 632 nm wavelengths were also *** was found that both dopant rate and calcination temperature affected the RL emission *** color shifted from red to green with increasing calcination temperature which was attributed to the increased crystallinit
