Is There Any Relationship between Total Hip Arthroplasty and Urinary Incontinent?

Introduction: In my daily practice as a hip surgeon, I have observed some circumstances where urinary incontinence (UI) improves after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We investigated UI symptoms before and after THA at our facility and considered the factors that influence UI. Patients and Method: The subjects were 113 female patients who underwent primary THA in our facility. An anterior lateral approach was used in all cases. Using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), we conducted an investigation into the presence of UI before and 2 weeks after THA. An improvement in UI was defined as a decrease of 1 point or more, a worsening is defined as an increase of 1 point or more. Results: The responses from the 113 subjects were analyzed. Of the 113 patients, prior to THA, UI was prevalent among 59 patients and was absent among 54 patients. In the group where UI was prevalent, it improved after THA in 50 patients (85%), remained unchanged in 5 (8%) and worsened in 4 (7%). In the group where UI was absent, 49 patients (91%) remained unchanged and UI appeared in 5 (9%). Compared with the non-prevalence group (62 patients), the prevalence group (50 patients) had a noticeable improvement rate of internal rotation of the surgical hip side (P Conclusion: UI greatly reduces the quality of life (QOL). In this study, there is a possibility that THA improves UI.

Dent corn, as a catch crop used for salt removal, was cultivated at different densities, i.e., 7.3 （low density）, 59.7 （normal density）, and 119.5 plants m-2 （high density）, during a 50 d fallow period after cultivation of a commercial crop in a greenhouse, to analyze the characteristics of nutrient salt （N, K, Mg, and Ca） uptake by roots and to study the effect of plant density on the characteristics associated with crop water use. Leaf area index for the high and normal density treatments reached extremely high values of 24.3 and 14.9, respectively. These values induced higher transpiration rates that were estimated using the Penman-Monteith model with the incorporation of specific parameters for crop and greenhouse conditions. The total N, K, Mg, and Ca contents in the crop canopy at harvest were 26.8, 13.0, 1.0, and 1.7 g m-S, respectively, under the high density treatment. The dynamics of salt uptake rates for high, normal, and low density treatments were evaluated by assessing weekly changes in salt content, and were subsequently compared against the transpiration rate. A positive linear relationship was obtained between these 2 parameters for all 3 density treatments and all tested salts. Hence, higher transpiration rates caused higher salt uptake rates through water absorption. On the other hand, salt uptake efficiency per unit water use by cultivation was lower in the low density treatment. Therefore, management procedures with dense planting that induce higher transpiration rates and lower evaporation rate are extremely important for the effective cultivation of corn catch crops.

The results on high power injection with the ueutral bean, injection （NBI） system for the Large Helical Device （LHD） are reported. The system consists of three beam-lines with two hydrogen negative ion （H^- ion） sources installed in each beam-line. In order to improve the injection power, a new beam accelerator with a multi-slot grounded grid （MSGG） has been developed and applied to one beam-line. Using the accelerator, a maximum power of 5.7 MW was achieved in 2003 and 2004, and the maximum energy of 189 keV was reached. The power and energy exceeded the design values of the individual beam-line for LHD. The other beam-lines also increased their injection power up to about 4 MW, and the total injection power of 13.1 MW was achieved with three beam-llnes in 2003. Although the accelerator had an advantage in high power beam injection, extracted beams expand in the short side direction of the ground-grid slot. The disadvantage has been resolved by modifying the aperture shapes of the steering grid.

＜正＞ Azobenzene liquid-crystalline elastomers （LCEs） were prepared by copolymerization of an LC monomer and a cross-linker both containing azobenzene moieties. Two types of the LCE films were prepared: monodomain films and polydomains films. Photoirradiation of the monodomain films with UV linearly polarized light （LPL） gave rise to bending of the films toward actinic light along the polarization direction, when the light polarization was parallel to the rubbing direction. When the two directions were perpendicular to each other, the bending was isotropic without a preferential direction. On the other hand, exposure of the polydomain films to UV LPL led to bending of the films always along the polarization direction of the actinic light. This means that one can induce bending of the films along any direction precisely by choosing the polarization direction of the actinic light. Furthermore, the bent monodomain and polydomain films could revert to their initial flat states upon irradiation of visible light. In addition, mechanical force generated in the bending process was investigated by details. The photoinduced bending of the azobenzene LCEs supplies an efficient method for converting light energy to mechanical work, and the bending systems are hoped to be applied for the microscopical soft machines.

＜正＞Naofen（GenBank ID:EF613262）,a novel WD40-repeat-domain（WRD）containing protein,has recently been cloned from cDNA library of rat’s brain/spinal cord using anti-shigatoxin 2（STX2）*** containing proteins have a wide variety of functions including signal transductions,apoptosis,cell proliferation,and many are involved in coordinating protein-protein interactions in large multiprotein *** STX2 induces apoptosis in *** the present study,we evaluated the participation of naofen in apoptosis of HEK293 cells and further the roles of naofen in tumor necrosis factor alpha（TNF-α）-induced *** results showed that:（1）Naofen is ubiquitously distributed throughout the body of rat,with a maximal concentration in testis.（2） The transfection with an empty plasmid as control did not alter the caspase activities,whereas full-length naofen transfection increased them:Caspase-8 and -9 activities increased at 12 h after naofen transfection,reached maximum at 36 h and then ***-3 activities also increased from 24 h and continued till 72 h.（3）Clones of HEK293,which stably expressed naofen,also continuously elicited high caspase-3 activities.（4）Treatment with TNF-αor dexomethasone,both apoptosis inducers,significantly increased naofen mRNA expressions in a concentration -dependent manner.（5）In the clones,TNF-αincreased the caspase-3 activities to a much greater *** addition,higher susceptibility to cells was demonstrated with a flowcytometry utilizing the fluorescent labeled annexin V as a *** conclude that naofen is an important cytosolic protein,playing a principal role in cell apoptosis via promoting the caspase-3 activities,and that naofen may mediate the caspase-activation in the TNF-α-induced apoptosis.

A Possible Causal Mechanism of Geomagnetic Variations as Observed Immediately before and after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake

During the Mw9 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, gradual increases in both ionosphere total electron content (TEC) and geomagnetic declination signals were observed, starting from ~40 minutes before the mainshock, followed by impulsive enhancements ~10 minutes after the mainshock. There have been many studies on pre-seismic TEC enhancements, including their characteristics, debates regarding whether TEC anomalies are real signals or artefacts, and the explainable models, and many studies have reported that the impulsive TEC enhancement was caused by a tsunami-induced neutral atmospheric gravity wave. Since TEC and geomagnetic declination anomalies were synchronized so that their origin should be attributed to the same seismic activities, any models must explain both anomalous phenomena, but not the case considered herein. Compared with the corresponding TEC anomalies, we re-examined the characteristics of geomagnetic variation just before and after the mainshock, focusing on the generation process of the impulsive enhancement immediately after the mainshock. We showed that the observed anomaly could be explained if there are quasi-static electric currents of 20 - 30 kA generated near the epicentre area. The possible mechanism of the current generation is discussed in terms of the ionization process in the atmosphere near the sea surface.

Then,by the strain gauge bonded outside of the cylinder,we evaluated the adhesive failure and the material destruction at the heat cycle. As a result,it was found that the distortion of the circumferential direction was larger than the lengthwise direction and it was found that the thermal strain changed from the kind of the adhesive,the bonding lap length,the bonding layer thickness and so ***,change of the distortion in curing process was able to be measured.
