Topiramate induced peripheral neuropathy:A case report and review of literature

Drug-induced peripheral neuropathy had been rarely reported as an adverse effect of some antiepileptic drugs(AEDs) at high cumulative doses or even within the therapeutic drug doses or *** describe clinical and diagnostic features of a patient with peripheral neuropathy as an adverse effect of chronic topiramate(TPM) therapy.A 37-year-old woman was presented for the control of active epilepsy(2010).She was resistant to some AEDs as mono-or combined therapies(carbamazepine,sodium valproate,levetiracetam,oxcarbazepine and lamotrigine).She has the diagnosis of frontal lobe epilepsy with secondary generalization and has a brother,sister and son with active *** became seizure free on TPM(2013-2017) but is complaining of persistent distal lower extremities paresthesia in a stocking *** examination revealed presence of diminished Achilles tendon reflexes,stocking hypesthesia and delayed distal latencies,reduced conduction velocities and amplitudes of action potentials of posterior tibial and sural nerves,indicating demyelinating and axonal peripheral neuropathy of the lower *** exclusion of the possible causes of peripheral neuropathy,chronic TPM therapy is suggested as the most probable cause of patient's *** is the first case report of topiramate induced peripheral neuropathy in the literature.

Rapid synthesis of MoSi_2-Si_3N_4 nanocomposite via reaction milling of Si and Mo powder mixture

The nanocomposite of MoSi2-SiaN4 （molybdenum disilicide-silicon nitride） was synthesized by reaction milling of the Mo and Si powder mixture. Changing the processing parameters led to the formation of different products such as a- and B-MoSi2, SiaN4, Mo2N, and M05Si3 at various milling times. A thermodynamic appraisal showed that the milling of Moa2Siss powder mixture was associated with highly exothermic mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction （MSR） between Mo and Si. The MSR took place around 5 h of milling led to the formation of a-MoSi2 and the reaction between Si and N2 to produce Si3N4 under a nitrogen pressure of 1 MPa. By increasing the nitrogen pressure to 5 MPa, more heat is released, resulting in the dissociation of Si3N4 and the transformation of a-MoSi2 to β-MoSi2. Heat treatment was also performed on the milled samples and led to the formation of Mo2N and the transformation of a-MoSi2 to β-MoSi2 at the milling times of 10 and 40 h, respectively.

Epocast 50-A1/946 epoxy was primarily developed for joining and repairing of composite aircraft structural components. The objective of the present work is to modify the Epocast epoxy resin by different nanofillers infusion. The used nanofillers include multi-walled carbon nanotubes（MWCNTs）, SiC and Al2O3 nanoparticles. The nanofillers with different weight percentages are ultrasonically dispersed in the epoxy resin. The sonication time and amplitude for MWCNTs are reduced compared to Al2O3 and SiC nanoparticles to avoid the damage of MWCNTs during sonication processes. The fabricated neat epoxy and twelve nanocomposite panels were characterized via standard tension and in-plane shear tests. The experimental results show that the nanocomposites materials with 0.5wt% MWCNTs, 1.5wt% SiC and 1.5wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles have the highest improvement in the tensile properties compared to the other nanofiller loading *** improvements in the shear properties of these nanocomposite materials were respectively equal to 5.5%, 4.9%, and 6.3% for shear strengths, and 10.3%, 16.0%, and 8.1% for shear moduli. The optimum nanofiller loading percentages will be used in the following papers concerning their effect on the bonded joints/repairs of carbon fiber reinforced composites.

This study investigates the efficiency of two types of rehabilitation methods based on economic justification that can lead to logical decision making between the retrofitting schemes. Among various rehabilitation methods, concentric chevron bracing（CCB） and cylindrical friction damper（CFD） were selected. The performance assessment procedure of the frames is divided into two distinct phases. First, the limit state probabilities of the structures before and after rehabilitation are investigated. In the second phase, the seismic risk of structures in terms of life safety and financial losses（decision variables） using the recently published FEMA P58 methodology is evaluated. The results show that the proposed retrofitting methods improve the serviceability and life safety performance levels of steel and RC structures at different rates when subjected to earthquake loads. Moreover, these procedures reveal that financial losses are greatly decreased, and were more tangible by the application of CFD rather than using CCB. Although using both retrofitting methods reduced damage state probabilities, incorporation of a site-specific seismic hazard curve to evaluate mean annual occurrence frequency at the collapse prevention limit state caused unexpected results to be obtained. Contrary to CFD, the collapse probability of the structures retrofitted with CCB increased when compared with the primary structures.

The effect of Gd/Al ratio on the properties of as-cast Mg-Gd-Al-Zn alloys was investigated by changing the chemical composition from that of AZ61 to GZ61. At the ratio of 1, the Al2Gd phase becomes predominant and Mg17Al12is hardly seen in the microstructure. As a potent inoculant, the Al2Gd phase resulted in intense grain refinement and enhancement of strength, ductility and toughness. For instance, the tensile strength and elongation to failure of Mg-3Gd-3Al-1Zn alloy were enhanced by4% and 180% compared with those of AZ61 alloy, respectively. However, at high Gd/Al ratios, the Al2Gd phase was replaced by（Mg,Al）3Gd and Mg5 Gd phases and very large grain sizes were achieved, which led to poor tensile properties and the appearance of cleavage facets on the fracture surfaces. Therefore, it can be deduced that the presence of Gd and Al, in appropriate amounts to reach Gd/Al ratio of ~ 1, is required for the achievement of grain refinement, good ductility, high strength, and the appearance of ductile fracture surfaces in the Mg-Gd-Al-Zn ***, the Mg-Gd-Al-Zn alloys can be considered as a new class of structural magnesium alloy and it is superior to both AZ（Mg-Al-Zn） and GZ（Mg-Gd-Zn） series of alloys.

Residential and commercial buildings are undergoing a dramatic change,and the Internet of Things(IoT)tech-nologies are shaping the future of these *** have recently utilized IoT in a variety of applica-tions and settings to transfer conventional buildings into smart,efficient,and secure *** functional IoT approaches have been developed,there is still a need for improvement in IoT applications and operations to understand the full potential of this *** improvement can properly be done by bridging the gaps of the current literature to provide a building block for future *** objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of research work on the existing technologies and applications of IoT in residential and commercial *** residential buildings,studies are divided to three major categories of home automa-tion,intelligent energy management systems,and healthcare *** commercial buildings,the current literature is divided to four categories of office buildings,healthcare facilities,educational buildings,and restau-rants and retail *** on the review of each category,the trends,current benefits and risks,and future challenges of the IoT implementation in the built environments are identified and *** particular,in-tegration of various IoT technologies with different capabilities,data storage and processing,and privacy and security risks are identified as the main challenges for IoT *** addition,our results show that the commercial building sector has received more attention compared to the residential building *** providing the directions for future research opportunities,this paper benefits IoT developers and researchers to properly identify their work boundaries and define their contributions.

The significance of flow optimization utilizing the lattice Boltzmann(LB)method becomes obvious regarding its advantages as a novel flow field solution method compared to the other conventional computational fluid dynamics *** unique characteristics of the LB method form the main idea of its application to optimization *** this research,for the first time,both continuous and discrete adjoint equations were extracted based on the LB method using a general procedure with low implementation *** proposed approach could be performed similarly for any optimization problem with the corresponding cost function and design variables ***,this approach was not limited to flow fields and could be employed for steady as well as unsteady ***,the continuous and discrete adjoint LB equations and the cost function gradient vector were derived mathematically in detail using the continuous and discrete LB equations in space and time,***,new adjoint concepts in lattice space were ***,the analytical evaluation of the adjoint distribution functions and the cost function gradients was carried out.
