Education and the Fourth Industrial Revolution:Lessons from COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted educators to rethink educational practices,especially with regard to *** COVID-19 pandemic is a huge challenge to education systems around the *** Viewpoint offers guidance to teachers,institutional heads,and officials on addressing the *** study investigated technology use in teaching during the COVID-19 lockdown inMalaysia,focusing on technology-based teaching methods,modifications necessitated by this new teaching style,and challenges teachers faced when using *** purposive sampling,a qualitative study was undertaken with a sample of 10 English language teachers from Arabic schools in *** results indicated that a digital leap occurred in education during the COVID-19 lockdown because teachers had to quickly adapt to a more technology-based teaching *** challenges teachers faced included managing virtual classes,ensuring reliable Internet connections,overcoming a lack of preparedness and low digital competence,and dealing with students’mental *** changes in teaching methods have created new roles for teachers while also increasing their acceptance of e-learning and remote *** contribution of this research is to provide a holistic picture of remote education activities during the pandemic period to establish a linkage between the online teaching-learning process during the COVID-19 outbreak as to ensure the resumption of teaching-learning education as a normal course of procedure in the education *** the human suffering brought by the pandemic,the new norms of education during COVID-19 generally have some pockets of excellence to drive the education into the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Faulty Phase Identification for Transmission Line with Metal Oxide Varistor-protected Series Compensator

The nonlinear operation of metal oxide varistor(MOV)-protected series compensator in transmission lines introduces complications into fault detection approaches. The accuracy of a conventional fault detection schemes is adversely affected by continuous change of the system impedance and load current at the point of a series compensation unit. Thus, this study suggests a method for detecting the faulted phase in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines. Primarily, the fault feature is identified using the covariance coefficients of the current samples during the fault period and the current samples during the pre-fault period. Furthermore, a convenience fault detection index is established by applying the cumulative sum technique. Extensive validation through different fault circumstances is accomplished, including different fault positions,resistances, and inception times. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well with high resistance or impedance faults, faults in noisy conditions, and close-in and far-end faults. The proposed method is simple and efficient for faulty phase detection in MOV-protected series-compensated transmission lines.

Influence of vertical loads on lateral response of pile foundations in sands and clays

Although the load applied to pile foundations is usually a combination of vertical and lateral components,there have been few investigations on the behavior of piles subjected to combined *** few studies led to inconsistent results with regard to the effects of vertical loads on the lateral response of piles.A series of three-dimensional(3D) finite differences analyses is conducted to evaluate the influence of vertical loads on the lateral performance of pile *** idealized sandy and clayey soil profiles are considered:a homogeneous soil layer,a layer with modulus proportional to depth,and two-layered *** pile material is modeled as linearly elastic,while the soil is idealized using the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model with a non-associated flow *** order to confirm the findings of this study,soils in some cases are further modeled using more sophisticated models(*** model for sandy soils and modified Cam-Clay(MCC) model for clayey soils).Numerical results showed that the lateral resistance of the piles does not appear to vary considerably with the vertical load in sandy soil especially at the loosest ***,the presence of a vertical load on a pile embedded in homogeneous or inhomogeneous clay is detrimental to its lateral capacity,and it is unconservative to design piles in clays assuming that there is no interaction between vertical and lateral ***,the current results indicate that the effect of vertical loads on the lateral response of piles embedded in twolayered strata depends on the characteristics of soil not only surrounding the piles but also located beneath their tips.

Extreme Learning Machine(ELM)is popular in batch learning,sequential learning,and progressive learning,due to its speed,easy integration,and generalization ***,Traditional ELM cannot train massive data rapidly and efficiently due to its memory residence,high time and space *** ELM,the hidden layer typically necessitates a huge number of ***,there is no certainty that the arrangement of weights and biases within the hidden layer is *** solve this problem,the traditional ELM has been hybridized with swarm intelligence optimization *** paper displays five proposed hybrid Algorithms“Salp Swarm Algorithm(SSA-ELM),Grasshopper Algorithm(GOA-ELM),Grey Wolf Algorithm(GWO-ELM),Whale optimizationAlgorithm(WOA-ELM)andMoth Flame Optimization(MFO-ELM)”.These five optimizers are hybridized with standard ELM methodology for resolving the tumor type classification using gene expression *** proposed models applied to the predication of electricity loading data,that describes the energy use of a single residence over a fouryear *** the hidden layer,Swarm algorithms are used to pick a smaller number of nodes to speed up the execution of *** best weights and preferences were calculated by these algorithms for the hidden *** results demonstrated that the proposed MFO-ELM achieved 98.13%accuracy and this is the highest model in accuracy in tumor type classification gene expression *** in predication,the proposed GOA-ELM achieved 0.397which is least RMSE compared to the other models.

Tweetluenza: Predicting Flu Trends from Twitter Data

Health authorities worldwide strive to detect Influenza prevalence as early as possible in order to prepare for it and minimize its impacts. To this end, we address the Influenza prevalence surveillance and prediction problem. In this paper, we develop a new Influenza prevalence prediction model, called Tweetluenza, to predict the spread of the Influenza in real time using cross-lingual data harvested from Twitter data streams with emphases on the United Arab Emirates(UAE). Based on the features of tweets, Tweetluenza filters the Influenza tweets and classifies them into two classes, reporting and non-reporting. To monitor the growth of Influenza, the reporting tweets were employed. Furthermore, a linear regression model leverages the reporting tweets to predict the Influenza-related hospital visits in the future. We evaluated Tweetluenza empirically to study its feasibility and compared the results with the actual hospital visits recorded by the UAE Ministry of Health. The results of our experiments demonstrate the practicality of Tweetluenza, which was verified by the high correlation between the Influenza-related Twitter data and hospital visits due to Influenza. Furthermore, the evaluation of the analysis and prediction of Influenza shows that combining English and Arabic tweets improves the correlation results.

Many complex optimization problems in the real world can easily fall into local optimality and fail to find the optimal solution,so more new techniques and methods are needed to solve such *** algorithms have received a lot of attention in recent years because of their efficient performance and simple *** Cosine Algorithm(SCA)is a recent Metaheuristic algorithm that is based on two trigonometric functions Sine&***,like all other metaheuristic algorithms,SCA has a slow convergence and may fail in sub-optimal *** this study,an enhanced version of SCA named RDSCA is suggested that depends on two techniques:random spare/replacement and double adaptive *** first technique is employed in SCA to speed the convergence whereas the second method is used to enhance exploratory searching *** evaluate RDSCA,30 functions from CEC 2017 and 4 real-world engineering problems are ***,a nonparametric test called Wilcoxon signed-rank is carried out at 5%level to evaluate the significance of the obtained results between RDSCA and the other 5 variants of *** results show that RDSCA has competitive results with other metaheuristics algorithms.

Turing instability in a diffusive SIS epidemiological model

Modeling and simulation of infectious diseases help to predict the likely outcome of an epidemic. In this paper, a spatial susceptible-infective-susceptible （SIS） type of epidemiological disease model with self- and cross-diffusion are investigated. We study the effect of diffusion on the stability of the endemic equilibrium with disease-induced mortality and nonlinear incidence rate, In the absence of diffusion the stationary solution stays stable but becomes unstable with respect to diffusion and that Turing instability takes place. We show that a standard （self-diffusion） system may be either stable or unstable, cross-diffusion response can stabilize an unstable standard system or decrease a ＂ihlring space （the space which the emergence of spatial patterns is holding） compared to the ~lhlring space with self-diffusion, i.e. the cross-diffusion response is an important factor that should not be ignored when pattern emerges. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate and extend the theoretical results.

To fill the continuous needs for faster processing elements with less power consumption causes large pressure on the complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)technology *** scaling scenario is not an option nowadays and other technologies need to be *** quantum-dot cellular automata(QCA)technology is one of the important emerging nanotechnologies that have attracted much researchers’attention in recent *** technology has many interesting features,such as high speed,low power consumption,and small *** features make it an appropriate alternative to the CMOS *** paper suggests three novel structures of XNOR gates in the QCA *** presented structures do not follow the conventional approaches to the logic gates design but depend on the inherent capabilities of the new *** proposed structures are used as the main building blocks for a single-bit *** resulted circuits are simulated for the verification purpose and then compared with existing counterparts in the *** comparison results are encouraging to append the proposed structures to the library of QCA gates.

Investigation of improving wear performance of hypereutectic 15%Cr-2%Mo white irons

This study aimed at optimizing impact toughness and abrasion wear resistance of 15%Cr-2%Mo hypereutectic abrasion-resistant white irons. The effects of dynamic solidification, niobium addition, combined action of them and heat treatment have been investigated. Investigations were performed by means of the image analyzer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray diffraction. Impact toughness and abrasion wear resistance tests were conducted. Fracture and worn surfaces were studied. Results indicated that microstructural control during solidifciation is the most valuable tool to attain the optimum combination between impact toughness and wear resistance in hypereutectic iron. Combined action of Nb addition and dynamic solidifciation improves impact toughness and wear resistance even more than the action of each individual factor. In the as-cast condition, impact toughness and abrasion resistance were increased after dynamic solidification compared to statically solidified one by 71.4% and 10%, respectively. This enhancement was increased to 114.3 % and 28.8 % by adding 2% Nb. Lower tempering temperature of 260°C exhibits better impact and abrasion resistance than the sub-critical tempering temperature of 500°C.
