Crystal lattice deformations can be described microscopically by explicitly accounting for the position of atoms or macroscopically by continuum *** this work,we report on the description of continuous elastic fields derived from an atomistic representation of crystalline structures that also include features typical of the microscopic *** expressions for strain components are obtained from the complex amplitudes of the Fourier modes representing periodic lattice positions,which can be generally provided by atomistic modeling or *** magnitude and phase of these amplitudes,together with the continuous description of strains,are able to characterize crystal rotations,lattice deformations,and ***,combined with the so-called amplitude expansion of the phase-field crystal model,they provide a suitable tool for bridging microscopic to macroscopic *** study enables the in-depth analysis of elasticity effects for macroscale and mesoscale systems taking microscopic details into account.

A Dilemma of Language: “Natural Disasters” in Academic Literature

For decades sections of the academic community have been emphasizing that disasters are not ***, politicians, the media, various international organizations—and, more surprisingly, many established researchers working in disaster studies—are still widely using the expression 'natural disaster.' We systematically analyzed the usage of the expression 'natural disaster' by disaster studies researchers in 589 articles in six key academic journals representative of disaster studies research,and found that authors are using the expression in three principal ways:(1) delineating natural and human-induced hazards;(2) using the expression to leverage popularity;and(3) critiquing the expression 'natural disaster.' We also identified vulnerability themes that illustrate the context of 'natural disaster' usage. The implications of continuing to use this expression, while explicitly researching human vulnerability, are wide-ranging, and we explore what this means for us and our peers. This study particularly aims to stimulate debate within the disaster studies research community and related fields as to whether the term 'natural disaster' is really fit for purpose moving forward.

Li metal anode holds great promise to realize high-energy battery ***,the safety issue and limited lifetime caused by the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites hinder its commercial ***,an interlayer-bridged 3D lithiophilic rGO-Ag-S-CNT composite is proposed to guide uniform and stable Li plating/*** 3D lithiophilic rGO-Ag-S-CNT host is fabricated by incorporating Ag-modified reduced graphene oxide(rGO)with S-doped carbon nanotube(CNT),where the rGO and CNT are closely connected via robust Ag-S covalent *** strong Ag-S bond could enhance the structural stability and electrical connection between rGO and CNT,significantly improving the electrochemical kinetics and uniformity of current ***,density functional theory calculation indicates that the introduction of Ag-S bond could further boost the binding energy between Ag and Li,which promotes homogeneous Li nucleation and ***,the rGO-Ag-S-CNT-based anode achieves a lower overpotential(7.3 mV at 0.5 mA cm^(−2)),higher Coulombic efficiency(98.1%at 0.5 mA cm^(−2)),and superior long cycling performance(over 500 cycles at 2 mA cm−2)as compared with the rGO-Ag-CNT-and rGO-CNT-based *** work provides a universal avenue and guidance to build a robust Li metal host via constructing a strong covalent bond,effectively suppressing the Li dendrites growth to prompt the development of Li metal battery.

QoS Guided min—min Heuristic for Grid Task Scheduling

Task scheduling is an integrated component of computing. With the emergence of Grid and ubiquitous computing, new challenges appear in task scheduling based on properties such as security, quality of service, and lack of central control within distributed administrative domains. A Grid task scheduling framework must be able to deal with these issues. One of the goals of Grid task scheduling is to achieve high system throughput while matching applications with the available computing resources. This matching of resources in a non-deterministically shared heterogeneous environment leads to concerns over Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper a novel QoS guided task scheduling algorithm for Grid computing is introduced. The proposed novel algorithm is based on a general adaptive scheduling heuristics that includes QoS *** algorithm is evaluated within a simulated Grid environment. The experimental results show that the new QoS guided min-min heuristic can lead to significant performance gain for a variety of applications. The approach is compared with others based on the quality of the prediction formulated by inaccurate information.

Critical assessment of a wide-spread method for estimating energy expenditure during accelerated running based on positioning tracking systems

*** An innovative method for estimating energy cost is to consider accelerated/decelerated running on flat terrain metabolically equivalent to uphill/downhill running at constant speed. In this method,the authors estimated an acceleration-dependent body *** slope corresponded to a given terrain slope during constant speed running,for which energy costs were known. Then they used accelerations(transformed into equivalent slopes)in a previously reported regression equation for energy cost estimation during uphill and downhill running at constant speed. This method allows researchers to estimate energy cost via player accelerations,thus making energy estimations feasible in team sports matches.
