Numerical study of the circular opening effect on mechanical behaviour of rock under confinement

Opening holes in rock including their size and distribution can affect the performance of rock-related structures.A good understanding on this will contribute to,for example,rock cavern design,and construction,tunnelling,and mining *** improve the understanding,a comprehensive investigation of the opening hole effect on the rock mechanical behaviour under biaxial loading condition is carried out by virtue of a hybrid continuum-discrete element *** specimens with both single hole and multi-hole of various radii are investigated and compared with the cases subjected to uniaxial *** is demonstrated that the confining pressure can increase both the stiffness and strength due to delaying the crack initiation and *** increase due to the confining pressure is more evident for the compressive *** single hole specimens with 0.75 mm radius hole,the increase ratio of the compressive strength is a linear increasing function with width and the increase ratio ranges from 2.15 for the specimen with 3.5 mm width to 2.45 for 10 mm *** the single hole specimen with 10 mm width,the increase ratio starts at 2.13 for the specimen with 0.75 mm radius hole,ascending to the peak of 2.37 for the specimen with 1 mm radius hole,followed by a decline to 2.2.for the specimen with 1.2. mm radius ***,for the multi-hole specimens,the increase ratio varies from 1.66 to *** addition,to verify the influence of confining pressure magnitude on the performance of the rock specimens,totalling 10 confining pressure levels are applied and *** simulation results show that even though there are opening holes in the specimens,the simulated compressive strength generally follows the generalised Hoek-Brown model.

＜正＞Seismic stability of rock slopes is numerically investigated using the numerical manifold method（NMM）.A parallelepiped block resting on an inclined plane as shown in Figure 1,which has been considered as a first approximation of the rock slope stability conditions,is employed in this study to find out the fundamentals of seismic instabilities of rock slopes and to validate the NMM for seismic instability analysis of rock slopes.

Numerical examples are shown in this context to demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of the present method. Results show that the BESO approach is capable of solving design problems for periodic structures by finding optimal conceptual designs.

Role of membrane and compound properties in affecting the rejection of pharmaceuticals by different RO/NF membranes

This study was conducted to assess the merits and limitations of various high-pressure membranes, tight nanofiltration （NF） membranes in particular, for the removal of trace organic compounds （TrOCs）. The performance of a low-pressure reverse osmosis （LPRO） membrane （ESPA1）, a tight NF membrane （NF90） and two loose NF membranes （HL and NF2.0） was compared for the rejection of 2. different pharmaceuticals （PhACs）. Efforts were also devoted to understand the effect of adsorption on the rejection performance of each membrane. Difference in hydrogen bond formation potential （HFP） was taken into consideration. Results showed that NF90 performed similarly to ESPA1 with mean rejection higher than 95%. NF2.0 outperformed HL in terms of both water permeability and PhAC rejection higher than 90%. Electrostatic effects were more significant in PhAC rejection by loose NF membranes than tight NF and LPRO membranes. The adverse effect of adsorption on rejection by HL and ESPA1 was more substantial than NF2.0 and NF90, which could not be simply explained by the difference in membrane surface hydrophobicity, selective layer thickness or pore size. The HL membrane had a lower rejection of PhACs of higher hydrophobicity （log D〉0） and higher HFP （〉0.02.. Nevertheless, the effects of PhAC hydrophobicity and HFP on rejection by ESPA1 could not be discerned. Poor rejection of certain PhACs could generally be explained by aspects of steric hindrance, electrostatic interactions and adsorption. High-pressure membranes like NF90 and NF2.0 have a high promise in TrOC removal from contaminated water.
