Silicon(Si)photonics has recently emerged as a key enabling technology in many application fields thanks to the mature Si process technology,the large silicon wafer size,and promising Si optical *** monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V lasers and Si photonic devices on the same Si substrate has been considered for decades as the main obstacle to the realization of dense photonics *** considerable progress in the last decade,only discrete III-V lasers grown on bare Si wafers have been reported,whatever the wavelength and laser *** we demonstrate the first semiconductor laser grown on a patterned Si photonics platform with light coupled into a waveguide.A mid-IR GaSb-based diode laser was directly grown on a pre-patterned Si photonics wafer equipped with SiN waveguides clad by SiO_(2).Growth and device fabrication challenges,arising from the template architecture,were overcome to demonstrate more than 10 mw outpower of emitted light in continuous wave operation at room *** addition,around 10%of the light was coupled into the SiN waveguides,in good agreement with theoretical calculations for this butt-coupling *** work lft an important building block and it paves the way for future low-cost,large-scale,fully integrated photonic chips.

Competitive effects of humic acid and wastewater on adsorption of Methylene Blue dye by activated carbon and non-imprinted polymers

Natural organic matter（NOM）, present in natural waters and wastewater, decreases adsorption of micropollutants, increasing treatment costs. This research investigated mechanisms of competition for non-imprinted polymers（NIPs） and activated carbon with humic acid and wastewater. Three different types of activated carbons（Norit PAC 200,Darco KB-M, and Darco S-51） were used for comparison with the NIP. The lower surface area and micropore to mesopore ratio of the NIP led to decreased adsorption capacity in comparison to the activated carbons. In addition, experiments were conducted for single-solute adsorption of Methylene Blue（MB） dye, simultaneous adsorption with humic acid and wastewater, and pre-loading with humic acid and wastewater followed by adsorption of MB dye using NIP and Norit PAC 200. Both the NIP and PAC 200 showed significant decreases of 27% for NIP（p = 0.087） and 29% for PAC 200（p = 0.096） during simultaneous exposure to humic acid and MB dye. There was no corresponding decrease for NIP or PAC 200 pre-loaded with humic acid and then exposed to MB. In fact, for PAC 200, the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon increased when it was pre-loaded with humic acid by 39%（p = 0.0005）. For wastewater, the NIP showed no significant increase or decrease in adsorption capacity during either simultaneous exposure or pre-loading. The adsorption capacity of PAC 200 increased by 40%（p = 0.001） for simultaneous exposure to wastewater and MB. Pre-loading with wastewater had no effect on MB adsorption by PAC 200.

Use of polymeric sub-micron ion-exchange resins for removal of lead,copper,zinc,and nickel from natural waters

This research investigated the removal capacity of polymeric sub-micron ion-exchange resins(SMR) for removal of lead, copper, zinc, and nickel from natural waters in competition with natural organic matter(NOM). Polymeric SMR particles were created and tested to ensure that they were adequately dispersed in the solution. They removed little NOM(10%or less) from river water and wastewater, indicating that competition from NOM was not a major concern. SMR were able to remove 82% ± 0.2% of lead, 46% ± 0.6% of copper, 55% ±20% of zinc, and 17% ± 2% of nickel from river water spiked with 500 μg/L of each. Similarly,in wastewater, they were able to remove 86% ± 0.1% of lead, 38% ± 0.8% of copper, 28% ± 1%of zinc, and 11% ± 1% of nickel.

This work presents the use of extended Modified Lambert Beer(MLB)model for accurate andcontinuous monitoring of percent blood carboxyhemoglobin(COHb)(SCO)and oxyhemoglobin(OxyHb)saturation(SO,)via a fitting *** quantification technique is based on theabsorption characteristics of hemoglobin derivatives in the wavelength range of 520-600 nm togive the best estimates of the required parameters.A comparison of the performance of the developed model and MILB law is made using attenuation data from Monte Carlo simulations for a two-layered skin *** results revealed a lower mean absolute error of 0.4%in the valuesestimated by the developed model as compared to 10%that is given by the MILB *** studyshowed that the discussed approach is able to provide consistent and accurate measurement ofblood SO,and SCO across diferent skin pigmen tations suggesting that it may potentially be usedas an alternative means for clinical diagnosis of carbon monoxide(CO)poisoning.

What do we know about parasitic plants and the leaf economic spectrum?

The leaf economic spectrum(LES)quantifes correlations between key leaf traits across vascular plants and distills much of the variation in these traits to a single *** LES,remarkable in its near universality,has been extensively researched across a variety of ***,parasitic plants relationship to the LES framework remains relatively *** the LES is,in part,driven by physiological tradeoffs in the acquisition of carbon(C),in theory heterotrophy in parasitic plants,which supplants some of the essential functions of leaves,could lead to departures from the *** global leaf trait data from the TRY database,this work assessed the overall representation of parasitic plants in the TRY database,then compared the LES suite of leaf traits in parasitic plants to their non-parasitic *** their unique physiology,parasitic plants did not deviate dramatically from the LES,although there were examples of differences in position on the LES and relationships among *** more importantly,parasitic plants are not well represented in the TRY database,making any conclusions here premature.

Multispectral imaging of acute wound tissue oxygenation

This paper investigates the appropriate range of values for the transcutaneous blood oxygen saturation(StO2)of granulating tissues and the surrounding tissue that can ensure timely wound *** work has used a multispectral imaging system to collect wound images at wave-lengths ranging between 520 nm and 600 nm with a resolution of 10 *** part of this research,a pilot study was conducted on three injured individuals with superfcial wounds of different wound ages at different skin *** S_(t)O_(2)value predicted for the examined wounds using the Extended Modified Lambert-Beer model revealed a mean S_(t)O_(2)of 61±10.3%compared to 41.6±6.2%at the surrounding tissues,and 50.1±1.53%for control *** preliminary results contribute to the existing knowledge on the possible range and variation of wound bed S_(t)O_(2)that are to be used as indicators of the functioning of the vasomotion system and wound *** study has concluded that a high S_(t)O_(2)of approximately 60%and a large fuctuation in this value should precede a good progression in wound healing.

Peer-Support in Oncology: A Qualitative Study of Caregivers Perception in a Cancer Center

This study aimed to gather healthcare professionals’expectations and reluctance toward peer support in a cancer *** interviews were conducted among 12 professionals,recruited in different *** interviews were fully transcribed,and a thematic analysis was then *** the data analysis,three main themes about professionals’expectations emerged:the need for the strongest support of the patients,to break the isolation in the sickness,and to enhance the care *** main themes also emerged from the data analysis about professionals’reluctances:the limitations related to the intervention of the peer-workers,the psychological issues of the relationship,and institutional barriers to the implementation of peer-support *** study shows that peer support could be a response to the expectations of healthcare professionals’,but its implementation should consider their reluctance.

Use of sub-micron sized resin particles for removal of endocrine disrupting compounds and pharmaceuticals from water and wastewater

Endocrine disrupting compounds（EDCs） and pharmaceuticals pose a challenge for water and wastewater treatment because they exist at very low concentrations in the presence of substances at much higher concentrations competing for adsorption ***-micron sized resin particles（approximately 300 nm in diameter）（SMR） were tested to evaluate their potential as a treatment for EDCs including：17-β estradiol（E2）,17-α ethinylestradiol（EE2）,estrone（E1）,bisphenol A（BPA）,and diethylstilbestrol（DES） as well as 12 *** were able to remove 98%of spiked E2,80%of EE2,87%of BPA,and up to 97%of DES from *** a 0.5 ppm mixture of E2,EE2,E1,BPA and DES,the minimum removal was24%（E2） and the maximum was 49%（DES）.They were also able to remove the pharmaceuticals from deionized water and ***,SMR are a promising advanced treatment for removal of both EDCs and pharmaceuticals.

A hierarchical optimisation framework for pigmented lesion diagnosis

The study of training hyperparameters optimisation problems remains underexplored in skin lesion *** is the first report of using hierarchical optimisation to improve computational effort in a four-dimensional search space for the *** authors explore training parameters selection in optimising the learning process of a model to differentiate pigmented lesions *** the authors'demonstration,pretrained GoogleNet is fine-tuned with a full training set by varying hyperparameters,namely epoch,mini-batch value,initial learning rate,and gradient *** iterative search of the optimal global-local solution is by using the derivative-based *** authors used non-parametric one-way ANOVA to test whether the classification accuracies differed for the variation in the training *** authors identified the mini-batch size and initial learning rate as parameters that significantly influence the model's learning *** authors'results showed that a small fraction of combinations(5%)from constrained global search space,in contrarily to 82%at the local level,can converge with early stopping *** mean(standard deviation,SD)validation accuracies increased from 78.4(4.44)%to 82.9(1.8)%using the authors'*** fine-tuned model's performance measures evaluated on a testing dataset showed classification accuracy,precision,sensitivity,and specificity of 85.3%,75.6%,64.4%,and 97.2%,*** authors'system achieves an overall better diagnosis performance than four state-of-the-art approaches via an improved search of parameters for a good adaptation of the model to the authors'*** extended experiments also showed its superior performance consistency across different deep networks,where the overall classification accuracy increased by 5%with this *** approach reduces the risk of search being trapped in a suboptimal solution,and its use may be expanded to network architecture optimisation for
