In recent decades,silicon photonics has attracted much attention in telecom and data-com *** of high refractive-index contrast waveguides on silicon-on-insulator(SOI),a variety of integrated photonic passive and active devices have been implemented supported by excellent optical properties of silicon in the mid-infrared *** main advantage of the silicon photonics is the ability to use complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)process-compatible fabrication technologies,resulting in high-volume production at low *** the other hand,explosively growing traffic in the telecom,data center and high-performance computer demands the data flow to have high speed,wide bandwidth,low cost,and high energy-efficiency,as well as the photonics and electronics to be integrated for ultra-fast data transfer in *** practical applications,silicon photonics started with optical interconnect transceivers in the data-com first,and has been now extended to innovative applications such as multi-port optical switches in the telecom network node and integrated optical phased arrays(OPAs)in light detection and ranging(LiDAR).This paper overviews the progresses of silicon photonics from four points reflecting the recent advances mentioned ***-based silicon photonic platform technologies,applications to optical transceiver in the data-com network,applications to multi-port optical switches in the telecom network and applications to OPA in LiDAR system.

Personalized immunotherapy in cancer precision medicine

With the significant advances in cancer genomics using next-generation sequencing technologies,genomic and molecular profilingbased precision medicine is used as a part of routine clinical test for guiding and selecting the most appropriate treatments for individual cancer *** many molecular-targeted therapies for a number of actionable genomic alterations have been developed,the clinical application of such information is still limited to a small proportion of cancer *** this review,we summarize the current status of personalized drug selection based on genomic and molecular profiling and highlight the challenges how we can further utilize the individual genomic *** immunotherapies,including immune checkpoint inhibitors,would be one of the potential approaches to apply the results of genomic sequencing most *** cancer-specific antigens derived from somatic mutations,the so-called neoantigens,occurring in individual cancers have been in focus *** immunotherapies,which target neoantigens,could lead to a precise treatment for cancer patients,despite the challenge in accurately predicting neoantigens that can induce cytotoxic T cells in individual *** prediction of neoantigens should accelerate the development of personalized immunotherapy including cancer vaccines and T-cell receptor-engineered T-cell therapy for a broader range of cancer patients.

The effect of interface roughness on the perpendicular exchange bias of NiO/CoPt/Pt stacking structure

An orthogonal coupling structure of NiO/CoPt/Pt/glass with perpendicular exchange bias effect has been *** exchange bias is found to be strongly dependent on the interface roughness between NiO and CoPt *** conventional inverse proportionality of the exchange bias field with the ferromagnetic thickness is not applicable to this top-pinned stacking ***,an anomalous ferromagnetic thickness dependence of blocking temperature is also observed.A simulation on the basis of a spin configuration model with defects at the interface agrees well with the experimental *** findings suggest considerable contribution of the interface roughness to the perpendicular exchange bias.

Miniaturization of Bubbles by Shock Waves in Gas-Liquid Two-phase Flow in the Venturi Tube

Fine bubbles have been widely applied in many fields such as industry,medical engineering and ***,many attentions have been paid to the study of fine bubble generations in order to increase the yield while decrease the ***,the generation process of fine bubbles is a quite complicated process in which multiple hydrodynamic forces are interacted in the gas-liquid two-phase *** studies focus on the techniques of the converging-diverging nozzle(venturi tube)generator,which is famous for its simple and cheap features,and generates fine bubbles by using the miniaturization phenomenon of bubbles occurring in the venturi ***,the impact conditions on the amount and size of bubbles such as nozzle geometry and bleed air haven’t been investigated *** this work,we implement many experiments on the venturi tube fine bubble generators with different geometries and generating conditions,and evaluate different factors impacting the production components such as the volume and the bubble *** experimental results show that the supersonic flow filed in the venturi tube promotes the miniaturization of the bubbles,and the convergent angle of the nozzle and air bleed have a great impact on the size and volume of bubbles.

Large deformation simulations of geomaterials using moving particle semi-implicit method

Numerical simulation tools are required to describe large deformations of geomaterials for evaluating the risk of geo-disasters. This study focused on moving particle semi-implicit(MPS) method, which is a Lagrangian gridless particle method, and investigated its performance and stability to simulate large deformation of geomaterials. A calculation method was developed using geomaterials modeled as Bingham fluids to improve the original MPS method and enhance its stability. Two numerical tests showed that results from the improved MPS method was in good agreement with the theoretical ***, numerical simulations were calibrated by laboratory experiments. It showed that the simulation results matched well with the experimentally observed free-surface configurations for flowing sand. In addition, the model could generally predict the time-history of the impact force. The MPS method could be a useful tool to evaluate large deformation of geomaterials.

Kinematically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty for Valgus Osteoarthritis of More than 10°―Is It Still a “Challenging Surgery”?

Mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for valgus knee is considered a “challenging surgery.” Recently, the kinematic alignment (KA) method has gained attention. This study aimed to present objective clinical data, such as intraoperative balance assessment and radiographic evaluation of postoperative lower extremity alignment after TKA using the KA method for valgus deformity. Twenty-one TKA knees (mean age, 74 years;2 males, 19 females) with KA for severe valgus deformity (hip-knee-ankle-angle ≥ 10°) performed at our department in the past 3 years were included in this study. Intraoperative gap and balance measurements and postoperative radiographic evaluation were performed. A total arc of range of motion was achieved up to 98% of preoperative values at 3 weeks postoperatively. Intraoperative gap and balance were stable throughout the entire range of motion. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences in either balance or gap values at each flexion angle. KA TKA is a “simple surgery” rather than a “challenging surgery” because additional soft tissue procedures are not required, operative time is short, intraoperative and postoperative balance is very stable, and a good alignment is achieved. This procedure may relieve surgeons of the stress of TKA for valgus deformities.

A Possible Mechanism of Cisplatin-Induced Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)-α Production in Murine Macrophages

Cisplatin has been used for the treatment of various solid cancers or sarcomas;however, it can induce severe adverse effects. Among these adverse effects, nephrotoxicity, which has the potential to be a dose-limiting factor of this agent, develops due to the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) from macrophages;however, the precise mechanisms are still unclear. To elucidate possible mechanisms, we investigated the involvement of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cisplatin-induced TNF-α mRNA expression and protein production in the mouse macrophage-like cell line, RAW 264. Cisplatin (1 μM) significantly increased TNF-α mRNA expression and protein production. Extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 MAPK, but not c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), phosphorylation increased in response to cisplatin. Although an ERK inhibitor (PD98059) suppressed both cisplatin-induced TNF-α mRNA expression and its protein production, a p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB203580) decreased TNF-α protein production only. A JNK inhibitor (SP600125) had no effect on cisplatin-induced TNF-α mRNA expression. Furthermore, a scavenger of ROS, N,N’-dimethylthiourea, suppressed both ERK activation and TNF-α mRNA expression. These results suggest that the phosphorylation of ERK by ROS is involved in cisplatin-induced TNF-α mRNA expression and that the signaling pathway of p38 MAPK is related to TNF-α protein production.

Food intolerance and oligoantigenic diet in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

The hypothesis that some children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may show sensitivity or allergic reactions to various food items has led to the development of the oligoantigenic diet. The rationale of the diet is to eliminate certain foods from the diet in order to exclude potential allergens contained either naturally in food or in artificial ingredients with allergenic properties. The oligoantigenic diet attempts to identify individual foods to which a person might be sensitive. First， ADHD symptoms are monitored while multiple foods are excluded from the diet. Subsequently， if symptoms remit， foods are re-introduced， while observing the individual for the return of symptoms. An advantage of the oligoantigenic diet is that it can be tailored to the individual. A growing body of evidence suggests that behavioral symptoms of subgroups of children with ADHD may benefit from the elimination of certain foods. The effect sizes of an oligoantigenic diet regarding improvement of ADHD symptoms have been found to be medium to large. Available evidence suggests that the investigation of the role of food hypersensitivities in ADHD is a promising avenue worthy of further exploration. Further large-scale， randomized controlled studies including assessment of long-term outcome are therefore warranted.
