Quantitative analysis with plastic strain indicators to estimate damage induced by fault-slip

In the present study, methodologies to evaluate damage around an underground opening due to seismic waves arising from mining-induced fault-slip are examined. First, expressions for an associated flow rule with a failure criterion are developed for biaxial stress conditions, which are implemented into FLAC3D code. A three-dimensional(3D) mine model encompassing a fault running parallel to a steeply dipping orebody is constructed, whereby static and dynamic analyses are performed to extract stopes and simulate fault-slip in dynamic condition, respectively. In the analysis, the developed biaxial model is applied to the stope wall. The fault-slip simulation is performed, considering shearing of fault surface asperities and resultant stress drop driving the fault-slip. Two methodologies to evaluate damage caused by seismic waves arising from the simulated fault-slip are examined:(i) the ratio of dynamic plastic strain increment to elastic strain limit and(ii) plastic strain energy density. For the former one, two types of strain increments are tested, namely effective shear strain increment and volumetric strain *** results indicate that volumetric strain increment is a suitable index for detecting damage near the stope wall, while effective shear strain increment is appropriate for evaluating damage in backfill. The evaluation method with plastic strain energy density is found to be capable of assessing damage accumulated in an extensive area caused by rock mass oscillation due to seismic wave propagation. Possible damage to mine developments in the proximity of a stope is clearly described with the index. The comparison of the two methods clarifies that the former one assesses "instantaneous" damage, which is found to be different from "accumulated" damage calculated using plastic strain energy density, in terms of damage area and its location. A simple method for estimating the contributions of mineral dust to PM2.5, PM10, or TSP is presented. The method is based on the assumption of external mixing of two types of particles with different PM2.5/PM10 ratios, The method was applied to local and transported dust events observed in Tsukuba, Japan, and was compared with collocated polarization lidar measurements. The method was then applied to three dust events that occurred in Oki, Rishiri, and Ochiishi,Japan, in 2012. The results showed that the method was useful for detecting mineral dust and for qualitatively describing the mixing of dust with anthropogenic aerosols.

This paper presents the basic principles of three different types of separating methods and a general guideline for choosing the most effective method for sorting plastic mixtures. It also presents the results of the tests carried out for separation of PVC, ABS and PET from different kinds of plastic mixtures in order to improve the grade of the raw input used in mechanical or feedstock recycling.

Generally speaking,anionic metal concentrations in wastewater from industries and mineral processing plants are well above the allowed limits for effluent set by the Ministry of Environment of Japan. Nowadays,the removal of anionic ions has been considered difficult and development of new process is desperately needed. In this paper,we report the development of three hydroxide-type adsorbents,illustrating their adsorption efficiency in removing As,Se,Mo and Sb ions from aqueous solutions. The main finding of this work was that the adsorption behavior was influenced very much by both the pH and the adsorbent concentration. Nevertheless,the newly developed hydroxide-type adsorbents were very effective in reducing the concentration of those anionic ions.

This study focused on measurement of the autothermal reforming of biogas over a Ni based monolithic catalyst. The effects of the steam/CH4 （S/C） ratio, O2/CH4 （O2/C） ratio and temperature were investigated. The CH4 conversions were higher under all examined temperatures than the equilibrium conversion calculated using the blank outlet temperature, because the catalyst layer was heated by the exothermic catalytic partial oxidation reaction. The CH 4conversion increased with increasing O2/C ratio. Moreover, the CH4 conversion was higher than the equilibrium conversion calculated using the blank outlet temperature for O2/C〉0.42 and reached about 100% at O2/C=0.55. However, the hydrogen concentration decreased for O2/C〉0.45 because hydrogen was combusted to steam in the presence of excess oxygen. On the other hand, the hydrogen and CO2 concentrations increased and the CO concentration decreased with increasing SIC ratio. As a result, it was found that the highest hydrogen concentrations and CH4 conversions were attained at the O2/C ratios of 0.45-0.55 and the SIC ratios of 1.5-2.5. Moreover, the H2/CO ratio could also be controlled in the range from about 2 to 3.5 to give at least 90% CH4 conversion, by regulating the O2/C or S/C ratios.

The possibility to apply the active hub-flap control method, which is a proven rotating stall control method for a single-stage compressor, to a 3-stage axial compressor is experimentally discussed, where complex rotating stall inception processes are observed. The research compressor is a 3-stage one and could change the stagger angle settings for rotor blades and stator vanes. Sixteen rotor blade/stator vane configuration patterns were tested by changing stagger angle for the stator vanes. By measurement of surface-pressure fluctuation, stall inception proc- esses are investigated and the measured pressure fluctuation data is used as a predictive signal for rotating stall. The experimental results show that the stall detection system applied to active hub-flap control in a single-stage compressor could be usefully applied to that in a 3-stage compressor with a more complex stall inception process.

The goal of this paper is to enhance a practical nominal characteristic trajectory following(NCTF) controller that is specifically designed for two-mass point-to-point positioning systems. A nominal characteristics trajectory contained in the NCTF controller acts as movement/motion reference and a compensator is utilized to force the object to detect and follow the reference/desired trajectory. The object must follow and track closely and should be as fast as possible. The NCTF controller is designed with two different intelligent based compensator approaches which are fuzzy logic and extended minimal resource allocation network. The proposed controller which is NCTF are compared with the conventional proportional integral compensator. Then the results of simulation are discussed for the positioning performances. The inertia variations due to the effect of the design parameters are also assessed to see the robustness of controllers. The results show that the NCTF control method designed from an intelligent based compensator has a better positioning performance in terms of percentage of overshoot, settling time, and steady state error than the classical based compensator.
