Objective: Genome-wide association studies have demonstrated that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are important risk factors for the development of prostate cancer (PCa). Preliminary studies have suggested that the incidence of PCa in Saudi males is low but is probably familial or genetically related.Methods: To identify any possible association of SNP with PCa development in Saudi patients, we investigated a group of SNPs in Saudi PCa patients (n=85) and compared the outcomes to healthy normal controls (n=115) and nodular hyperplasia patients (n=120). DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded formalin fixed tissue or whole blood from both patients’ groups and healthy control group. A total of thirteen SNPs were genotyped using TaqMan® minor groove binder polymerase chain reaction assay.Results: The rs16901979A, s629242T and rs1447295A alleles were found at significantly higher frequency in PCa patients than controls (p< 0.05). The rs16901979 CA genotype was found at significantly greater frequency in PCa patients than in healthy controls (43% vs. 14%, odds ratio=4.6, p=0.0001) and benign hyperplasia group (43% vs. 25%, odds ratio=2.2, p=0.009).Conclusion: Our study has highlighted the association of rs16901979 SNP with PCa in Saudi males. Such findings have important implications in the PCa diagnosis and in screening unaffected family members of Saudi patients.

Microbial fuel cell(MFC) is an advanced bioelectrochemical technique that can utilize biomass materials in the process of simultaneously generating electricity and biodegrading or bio transforming toxic pollutants from wastewater. The overall performance of the system is largely dependent on the efficiency of the anode electrode to enhance electron transportation. Furthermore, the anode electrode has a significant impact on the overall cost of MFC setup. Hence, the need to explore research focused towards developing cost-effective material as anode in MFC. This material must also have favourable properties for electron transportation. Graphene oxide(GO) derivatives and its modification with nanomaterials have been identified as a viable anode material. Herein, we discussed an economically effective strategy for the synthesis of graphene derivatives from waste biomass materials and its subsequent fabrication into anode electrode for MFC applications. This review article offers a promising approach towards replacing commercial graphene materials with biomass-derived graphene derivatives in a view to achieve a sustainable and commercialized MFC.

BACKGROUND Short bowel syndrome(SBS)hospitalizations are often complicated with sepsis.There is a significant paucity of data on adult SBS hospitalizations in the United States and across the globe.AIM To assess trends and outcomes of SBS hospitalizations complicated by sepsis in the United States.METHODS The National Inpatient Sample was utilized to identify all adult SBS hospitalizations between 2005-2014.The study cohort was further divided based on the presence or absence of sepsis.Trends were identified,and hospitalization characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared.Predictors of mortality for SBS hospitalizations complicated with sepsis were assessed.RESULTS Of 247097 SBS hospitalizations,21.7%were complicated by sepsis.Septic SBS hospitalizations had a rising trend of hospitalizations from 20.8%in 2005 to 23.5%in 2014(P trendalizations,septic SBS hospitalizations had a higher proportion of males(32.8%vs 29.3%,Palizations had a higher proportion of patients with intestinal transplantation(0.33%vs 0.22%,Pality(8.5%vs 1.4%,Pality for septic SBS hospitalizations.CONCLUSION Septic SBS hospitalizations had a rising trend between 2005-2014 and were associated with higher inpatient mortality compared to non-septic SBS hospitalizations.

Due to the combinatorial nature of graphs they are used easily in pure sciences and social sciences.The dynamical arrangement of vertices and their associated edges make them flexible(like liquid)to attain the shape of any physical structure or phenomenon easily.In the field of ICT they are used to reflect distributed component and communication among them.Mathematical chemistry is another interesting domain of applied mathematics that endeavors to display the structure of compounds that are formed in result of chemical reactions.This area attracts the researchers due to its applications in theoretical and organic chemistry.It also inspires the mathematicians due to involvement of mathematical structures.Regular or irregular bonding ability of molecules and their formation of chemical compounds can be analyzed using atomic valences(vertex degrees).Pictorial representation of these compounds helps in identifying their properties by computing different graph invariants that is really considered as an application of graph theory.This paper reflects the work on topological indices such as ev-degree Zagreb index,the first ve-degree Zagrebindex,the first ve-degree Zagrebindex,the second ve-degree Zagreb index,ve-degree Randic index,the ev-degree Randic index,the ve-degree atom-bond connectivity index,the ve-degree geometric-arithmetic index,the ve-degree harmonic index and the ve-degree sum-connectivity index for crystal structural networks namely,bismuth tri-iodide and lead chloride.In this article we have determine the exact values of ve-degree and ev-degree based topological descriptors for crystal networks.

The Ability of Some Aquatic and Terrestrial Plants to Purify Domestic Wastewater

The study aimed to evaluate the ability of some terrestrial and aquatic plants for wastewater puriﬁcation.Aquatic plants can remove pollutants from wastewater by consuming and accumulating various contaminants in different parts of plants.Different aquatic and terrestrial plants(Rosa sinensis,Typha latifolia,Ocimm bacilicum,Azolla pinnata,and Salvinia molesta)which have the ability to decrease water pollution were utilized in this study.The capability offive different species of plants was investigated by measuring chemical oxygen demand(COD),biological oxygen demand(BOD),electrical conductivity(EC),total dissolved solids(TDS),and pH of the medium.In this research,some aquatic and terrestrial plants were transplanted in wastewater plastic pots containing domestic wastewater with different ratios of 50%and 100%.Then,after 30 days,the physiological and biochemical parameters of plants were calculated to observe the effect of wastewater on plants.Results revealed higher chlorophyll and carotenoids in typha plants treated with 100%wastewater.The highest percentage of elimination in BOD(65%),COD(27%),TDS(72%),EC(83%),and pH(6.8%)was noted with the use of typha and azolla.Intriguingly,total soluble sugars,total free amino acids,and total proteins were found maximum in the hibiscus plant as compared to the other plants under 100%and 50%domestic wastewater treatment,while typha and ocimum showed lower values of these parameters irrespective of wastewater treatments.Moreover,the COD,BOD,TDS,EC,and pH trend was higher in 100%wastewater as compared to 50%wastewater.Taking into account the accumulation capacity of the tested plants especially typha can be efﬁciently used for the treatment of domestic wastewater.

Exploring the genetic basis of human infertility is currently under intensive investigation.However,only a handful of genes have been validated in animal models as disease-causing genes in infertile men.Thus,to better understand the genetic basis of human spermatogenesis and bridge the knowledge gap between humans and other animal species,we construct the FertilityOnline,a database integrating the literature-curated functional genes during spermatogenesis into an existing spermatogenic database,SpermatogenesisOnline 1.0.Additional features,including the functional annotation and genetic variants of human genes,are also incorporated into FertilityOnline.By searching this database,users can browse the functional genes involved in spermatogenesis and instantly narrow down the number of candidates of genetic mutations underlying male infertility in a user-friendly web interface.Clinical application of this database was exampled by the identification of novel causative mutations in synaptonemal complex central element protein 1(SYCE1)and stromal antigen 3(STAG3)in azoospermic men.In conclusion,FertilityOnline is not only an integrated resource for spermatogenic genes but also a useful tool facilitating the exploration of the genetic basis of male infertility.FertilityOnline can be freely accessed at http://***/bsc/spermgenes2.0/index.html.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers around the world with approximately 1.6 million new cases and 425 thousand deaths from the disease in 2010 （1）. While early detection methods and treatment have continuously evolved and improved over the years, there is still a strong need to further understand the pathways and mechanisms that lead to and drive this malignancy with the ultimate goal being more personalized, less toxic treatment with improved survival and higher cure rates.

Making medication prescriptions in response to the patient's diagnosis is a challenging task.The number of pharmaceutical companies,their inventory of medicines,and the recommended dosage confront a doctor with the well-known problem of information and cognitive overload.To assist a medical practitioner in making informed decisions regarding a medical prescription to a patient,researchers have exploited electronic health records(EHRs)in automatically recommending medication.In recent years,medication recommendation using EHRs has been a salient research direction,which has attracted researchers to apply various deep learning(DL)models to the EHRs of patients in recommending prescriptions.Yet,in the absence of a holistic survey article,it needs a lot of effort and time to study these publications in order to understand the current state of research and identify the best-performing models along with the trends and challenges.To fill this research gap,this survey reports on state-of-the-art DL-based medication recommendation methods.It reviews the classification of DL-based medication recommendation(MR)models,compares their performance,and the unavoidable issues they face.It reports on the most common datasets and metrics used in evaluating MR models.The findings of this study have implications for researchers interested in MR models.

Concentration-Dependent Solar Thermochemical CO_(2)/H_(2)O Splitting Performance by Vanadia-Ceria Multiphase Metal Oxide Systems

The effects of V and Ce concentrations(each varying in the 0-100%range)in vanadia-ceria multiphase systems are investigated for synthesis gas production via thermochemical redox cycles of CO_(2) and H_(2)O splitting coupled to methane partial oxidation reactions.The oxidation of prepared oxygen carriers is performed by separate and sequential CO_(2) and H_(2)O splitting reactions.Structural and chemical analyses of the mixed-metal oxides revealed important information about the Ce and V interactions affecting their crystal phases and redox characteristics.Pure CeO_(2) and pure V_(2)O_(5) are found to offer the lowest and highest oxygen exchange capacities and syngas production performance,respectively.The mixed-oxide systems provide a balanced performance:their oxygen exchange capacity is up to 5 times higher than that of pure CeO_(2) while decreasing the extent of methane cracking.The addition of 25%V to CeO_(2) results in an optimum mixture of CeO_(2) and CeVO4 for enhanced CO_(2) and H_(2)O splitting.At higher V concentrations,cyclic carbide formation and oxidation result in a syngas yield higher than that for pure CeO_(2).

硬碳、活性炭、碳纳米管(CNTs)、石墨烯、多孔炭和炭纤维等炭材料替代锂离子电池的石墨阳极是目前的研究热点。与石墨相比,这种材料已表现出更好的储锂电化学性能,但仍有待进一步发展空间。其中一种有效的方法是在炭材料结构中加入杂原子(例如氮),提高其作为锂离子负极时的电化学性能。本综述首先描述了氮掺杂如何对锂离子电池的性能产生积极影响,并举例说明了氮掺杂炭材料的优势。然后,比较了不同N掺杂炭材料中的X射线光电子能谱和扫描隧道显微镜的表征结果,通过统计分析了掺氮量对掺氮碳材料比容量的影响。
