In vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo hepatoprotective activity of aqueous extract of Allium cepa bulb in ethanol induced liver damage in Wistar rats

The in vitro antioxidant and in vivo hepatoprotective effects of aqueous extract of Allium cepa(***)bulb were evaluated in male rats against ethanol induced liver damage in preventive and curative *** antioxidant activity of *** was assayed and activities were compared to standard antioxidant,ascorbic *** results revealed that the IC50 values of *** bulb extract for DPPH,hydroxyl,superoxide radical scavenging activities were 195.2±0.2,374.7±0.4 and 182.5±1.7g/mL,*** injury was induced by 40%ethanol administration(3.76 g/kg bw,orally)for 25 *** two different sets of experiments,the *** extracts(100,300 and 600 mg/kg bw)and silymarin(100 mg/kg bw)were administered orally in preventive and curative *** administration caused severe hepatic damage in rats as evidenced by elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase(ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and total bilirubin *** *** and silymarin administration prevented the toxic effect of ethanol on the above serum parameters in both preventive and curative *** present study concludes that aqueous extract of *** bulb has significant antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity against ethanol induced hepatotoxicity.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food *** and hosting by Elsevier *** rights reserved.

The community living around the Cikaniki Area of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park(CAGHSNP)uses various plants to fulfill their *** habits are related to indigenous knowledge of using plants as food,medicine,construction,and household utilities,which dynamic societal changes have not *** study aimed to inventory and update potential plants used as food,medicine,construction,and household utilities by local communities in the Cikaniki area,and measure and analyze their cultural and ethnobotanical *** study objected to five hamlets in the Cikaniki at Malasari Village,Nanggung District,Bogor Regency,West Java,*** quantitative analysis was calculated based on the Informant Consensus Factor,Fidelity Level,and Use *** analyzed the qualitative data based on the data collection through observation,interviews,and documentation from informants and respondents in five *** study recorded 199 plant species from 75 families used by the community of *** most utilized species in Cikaniki were Staurogyne elongata,Caryota mitis,Blumea balsamifera,Castanopsis argentea,Pilea melastomoides,and Piper *** are 72 species of plants used as food,122species for medicinal purposes,and 50 species of plants used for construction and household *** potential plant species in the CA-GHSNP,their utilization categories,and recommendation for conservation strategy are discussed.

随着整个亚洲大陆的复兴,各国急需通过空气空间、陆地、内陆水域和海洋等多种渠道来增强联系,这正是“一带一路”倡议(以下简称BRI)提出的目的之一。特别是对于像尼泊尔这样的中亚和南亚内陆国家而言,BRI提供了各国彼此联系的基础设施、以及建设这些基础设施所需的投资与联系渠道。BRI给尼泊尔这样一个以喜马拉雅经济为主的内陆国家带来了很多希望。本文从古代丝绸之路的历史背景和尼泊尔与古代丝绸之路的关系入手,探讨中尼关系及其这种关系对尼泊尔实施BRI的影响,进而分析实施BRI给尼泊尔带来的机遇和挑战。本论文共分为五章,分别是绪论、古丝绸之路及其对“一带一路”倡议的意义、尼泊尔实施BRI的现实条件(特别是中尼双边关系对实施BRI的影响)、尼泊尔实施BRI的机遇与挑战以及结论部分。对于像尼泊尔这样的最不发达的国家而言,BRI被视为一个空前绝后的机遇。这是因为这个喜马拉雅内陆经济完全依赖印度作为第三国贸易对象。尼泊尔因这种对印度的过度依赖而遭受了很大的冲击,经济落后且急需现代化。BRI在尼泊尔的实施,将会给尼泊尔的经济发展带来很多机遇,但同时尼泊尔在经济、政治和环境等方面也会面临一些挑战。但这些挑战在追求尼泊尔经济繁荣的背景下曾被尼泊尔所忽略而没有给予足够的重视。此外,印度认为在尼泊尔实施BRI是对印度后院的侵犯,印度的影响使得BRI在尼泊尔的实施更具挑战性。所以,BRI不仅给尼泊尔带来了机遇,而且也带来了一些挑战。因此,本文也涉及印度和中国之间在尼泊尔可能因实施BRI而产生的摩擦,这可能会延迟甚至影响尼泊尔实施BRI。为此,本文从中国、尼泊尔和印度之间的三边关系视角进行分析。最后,本文得出结论,认为尽管尼泊尔在实施BRI过程中可能面临挑战,但这些挑战并非不可逾越,可通过尼泊尔和中国之间的双边谈判和/或通过尼泊尔的国内政策来处理。简而言之,尼泊尔实施BRI是空前绝后的机遇,但也存在一些挑战,尼泊尔需要处理好机遇带来的可能挑战,只要这样才能从BRI中真正获益。

Momordica charantia trypsin inhibitor Ⅱ inhibits growth and development of Helicoverpa armigera

Bitter gourd （Momordica charantia L.） seeds contain several squash-type serine proteinase inhibitors （PIs）, which inhibit the digestive proteinases of the polyphagous insect pest Helicoverpa armigera. In the present work isolation of a DNA sequence encoding the mature peptide of a trypsin inhibitor McTI-Ⅱ, its cloning and expression as a recombinant protein using Pichia pastoris have been reported. Recombinant McTI-Ⅱ inhibited bovine trypsin at 1 ： 1 molar ratio, as expected, but did not inhibit chymotrypsin or elastase. McTI-Ⅱ also strongly inhibited trypsin-like proteinases （81% inhibition） as well as the total proteolytic activity of digestive proteinases （70% inhibition） from the midgut of H. armigera larvae. The insect larvae fed with McTI-Ⅱ-incorporated artificial diet suffered over 70% reduction in the average larval weight after 12 days of feeding. Moreover, ingestion of McTI-Ⅱ resulted in 23% mortality in the larval population. The strong antimetabolic activity of McTI-Ⅱ toward H. armigera indicates its probable use in developing insect tolerance in susceptible plants.

The Receptor-Like Cytoplasmic Kinase （OsRLCK） Gene Family in Rice： Organization, Phylogenetic Relationship, and Expression during Development and Stress

Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases （RLCKs） in plants belong to the super family of receptor-like kinases （RLKs）. These proteins show homology to RLKs in kinase domain but lack the transmembrane domain. Some of the functionally characterized RLCKs from plants have been shown to play roles in development and stress responses. Previously, 149 and 187 RLCK encoding genes were identified from Arabidopsis and rice, respectively. By using HMM-based domain structure and phylogenetic relationships, we have identified 379 OsRLCKs from rice. OsRLCKs are distributed on all 12 chromosomes of rice and some members are located on duplicated chromosomal segments. Several OsRLCKs probably also undergo alternative splicing, some having evidence only in the form of gene models. To understand their possible functions, expression patterns during landmark stages of vegetative and reproductive development as well as abiotic and biotic stress using microarray and MPSS-based data were analyzed. Real-time PCR-based expression profiling for a selected few genes confirmed the outcome of microarray analysis. Differential expression patterns observed for majority of OsRLCKs during development and stress suggest their involvement in diverse functions in rice. Majority of the stress-responsive OsRLCKs were also found to be localized within mapped regions of abiotic stress QTLs. Outcome of this study would help in selecting organ/development stage specific OsRLCK genes/targets for functional validation studies.

HPLC Polyphenolics Profile and H₂O₂ Induced Cytoprotective Effect of Salacia oblonga Extracts on Human Lymphocytes

Salacia oblonga (Wall.) belonging to the family Celastraceae is an important medicinal plant available in India and Sri Lanka. It possesses an array of pharmacological and therapeutic properties. In the present study phenolic compounds of S. oblonga methanolic extracts were estimated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) indicating the presence of catechin, quercetin, synapic acid and syringic acid. The study involved evaluation of S. oblonga extracts for cytotoxic and cytoprotective effects on human lymphocytes. Aerial extracts have significant protective activity against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) induced cytotoxic activity in comparison to the root extracts. The results relate the cytoprotective effect of S. oblonga due to the presence of poly phenols and other phytochemicals, as they have significant ability to remove free radicals or reactive species and might induce the expression of antioxidant enzymes inside the cells.

Widespread catastrophic fog episodes in polluted northern India have been attributed to tropical cyclone activity in the Bay of Bengal&Arabian Sea;however,limited studies have been conducted on the effect of tropical cyclone intensity(’T’Numbers)on different fog characteristics in Indo Gangetic Basin,Northern *** this study,different characteristics,including persistence,intensity,and areal extension,were analyzed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport,New Delhi during 1998-99,2013-14,and 2016-17.A high-intensity tropical cyclone(Severe to Very Severe Cyclonic Storm)has been found to significantly increase the persistence,intensity,and areal extension of fog by inducing strong subsidence over the IGI Airport/Indo-Gangetic *** knowledge is vital for improving the short-term forecasting of fog in the IndoGangetic Basin of Northern India and will further support the Government agencies to take preventive safety measures and planning well in advance time.

Successful management of hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm complicating chronic pancreatitis by stenting

A 41-year old alchoholic male with a history of chronic pancreatitis was admitted for nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Angiogram was performed and demonstrated an aneurysmal sac with a narrow neck originating from the inferior aspect of the distal portion of the proper hepatic artery. The origin of the pseudoaneurysm was covered with a 5 mm × 2.5 cm Viabahn cover stent （Gore）. A repeat angiogram showed some leak and a second stent （6 mm × 2.3 cm） was deployed and overlapped with the first stent by 3 mm. Contrast was injected and a repeat angiogram demonstrated complete exclusion of the aneurysm. A repeat computerized axial tomography （CAT） scan of the abdomen after 24 h showed successful stenting. The patient had an uneventful post-operative course.

Elevated Carbon Dioxide Level Suppresses Nutritional Quality of Lettuce and Spinach

Rising global CO2 levels are a major factor that impacts not only the environment but also many plant functions including growth, productivity and nutritional quality. The study examined the impact of elevated [CO2] on nutritional quality and growth characteristics of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea). Elevated [CO2] decreased the concentration of many important nutrients including nitrogen (protein), potassium and phosphorus in the edible parts of both lettuce and spinach. The nitrogen concentration in lettuce shoots was reduced by more than 30% at elevated [CO2] compared to the plants grown at ambient level of CO2. Similarly the concentration of a number of micronutrients including sulfur, zinc, copper and magnesium, was depressed in lettuce shoots. Although the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were higher in lettuce at elevated CO2, they were not affected in spinach. The photosynthetic activity was variable among the plant species while there was no increase in the carbon accumulation in these plants at elevated [CO2]. However, there was significant reduction in the leaf stomatal conductance in both lettuce and spinach in response to higher [CO2], which is likely affect both water loss from the leaves and their photosynthetic activity. The results indicate a broad adverse impact of rising [CO2] on the nutritional quality of commonly consumed leafy vegetables namely, lettuce and spinach.
