Relationship between acrosin activity of human spermatozoa and oxidative stress

Aim: To study the association between seminal oxidative stress and human sperm acrosin activity. Methods: It is a prospective study consisting of 30 infertile men and 12 fertile normozoospermic volunteers. A full history, clinical examination and scrotal ultrasound were done to exclude other related factors such as smoking and varicocele. Presence of white blood cells (WBCs) in semen samples was evaluated by peroxidase staining. Lipid peroxidation in spermatozoa was induced after incubating with ferrous sulphate (4 mmol/L) and sodium ascorbate (20 mmol/L). Induced peroxidation of spermatozoa was assessed by determining the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Acrosin activity was measured using the gelatinolysis technique. The halo diameters around the sperm heads and the percentages of spermatozoa showing halo formation were evaluated. An acrosin activity index was calculated by multiplying the halo diameter by the halo formation rate. Results: A significant difference was observed in acrosin activity parameters and TBARS levels between samples with WBCs (>1×106/mL of ejaculate) and those without. This difference was also noted between the normozoospermic and the oligoasthenoteratozoospermic semen samples. The TBARS production by spermatozoa had a significant negative correlation with the acrosin activity index (r = -0.89, P he presence of oxidative stress in an individual with leukocytospermia and/or abnormal semen parameters is associated with impaired sperm function as measured by its acrosin activity.

Retting has been employed to extract natural fibers from agricultural wastes as a biological and cost-effective approach for *** its global abundance,banana pseudo-stem is a promising agro-waste for lignocellulosic fiber *** this study,fibers were extracted from the pseudo-stems after being pre-treated under four conditions using seawater at room temperature for up to 35 d Bacterial isolation from the fresh seawater sample and screening for ligninolytic ability were *** load as well as laccase and manganese peroxidase enzyme activity profile assay during the retting duration were *** transform infrared(FT-IR)and X-day diffraction(XRD)analyses were also examined for both pre-treated and untreated extracted *** results shows that six out of the eight bacterial isolates had the ability to degrade *** treatments(Raw stem+Raw seawater)and(Autoclaved stem+Raw seawater)recorded the highest viable bacterial load of 9.24×102 and 4.46×102 CFU,respectively,on the 14th day of the retting ***,the highest laccase and manganese peroxidase enzymes activity was recorded for(Raw stem+Raw seawater)and(Autoclaved stem+Raw seawater)treatments in the second to the third *** FT-IR spectra of the pre-treated fibers revealed relative reductions in peaks attributed to polysaccharides and other amorphous substances for all retting *** XRD diffractogram revealed that the crystallinity index(CI)of pre-treated fibers increased in all seawater retting treatment ***,the CI for fibers pre-treated under enzymatic conditions were enhanced even after five *** analysis for selected bacterial isolates showed homology to sequences of Bacillus velezensis,Shewanella sp.L8–5,and Citrobacter amalonaticus and Bacillus subtilis j8 *** these findings,it was suggested that physical,biological,and chemical actions were collectively involved in the seawater retting process of banana ps

Novel synthesis of stabilized Bi_(1-x-y)Gd_xDy_yO_(1.5) solid electrolytes with enhanced conductivity for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs)

herein,we report the synthesis of a Dy-Gd co-doped cubic phase-stabilized Bi_(2)O_(3) solid electrolyte system via solid-state processing under atmospheric *** with Dy^(3+) and Gd^(3+) has been observed to significantly enhance the densification process during sintering for stabilization purposes,thereby improving the electrical properties of δ-Bi_2O_(3)-type *** synthesized ceramics were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD),field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(FESEM-EDX),thermal gravimetry/differential thermal analysis(TG/DTA),and the four-point probe technique(4PPT).XRD analysis reveals that the samples Bi_(1-x-y)Gd_(x)Dy_(y)O_(1.5)(y=0.05/x=0.05,0.10,0,15,and 0.20,and x=0.05/y=0.10,0.15,and 0.20) exhibit a stable face-centered cubic δ-phase and a mixed-phase crystallographic *** XRD analysis of the stabilized δ-phase suggests that the prepared oxides show a face-centered cubic(FCC) structure with a space group of *** micrographs reveal that the composition Bi_(0.90)Gd_(0.05)Dy_(0.05)O_(1.5) has no significant ***,an evident increase in the pore formation is observed as the amount of Gd_(2O_(3) increases until it reaches 20%.This finding suggests that dense pellets are formed during the sintering process at 900-1000℃.The DTA analyses were performed to verify the phase stability,which agrees with the XRD *** electrochemical performance of the synthesized Dy-Gd co-doped Bi_2O_(3)solid electrolyte system was evaluated and analyzed in detail by using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) technique,Based on EIS and conductivity measurements,Bi_(0.75)Gd_(0.20)Dy_(0.05)O_(1.5) exhibits the lowest activation energy of 0.519 eV and the highest conductivity value of 0.398 S/cm at 627℃compared to the other samples;this composition can be used as a solid electrolyte for intermediatetemperature solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs).

Modifying effects and mechanisms of superfine stainless wires on microstructures and mechanical properties of ultra-high performance seawater sea-sand concrete

Ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete（UhPSSC） presents a prospective solution to address the natural resource shortage in marine infrastructure construction. To eliminate the corrosion risk of steel fibers and broaden the applicability of UhPSSC, this study investigates the mechanical properties and free chloride ion content as well as microstructures of UhPSSC reinforced with superfine stainless wires（SSWs） under natural curing. The results indicate that 1.5% SSWs can remarkably improve the flexural strength and toughness of UhPSSC by 127% and 1724%, respectively, and mitigate the long-term strength degradation of UhPSSC. The strong interfacial bond between SSW and UhPSSC improves the compactness of UhPSSC, thus reducing the growth space for Ca（Oh）2crystals and swelling hydration products generated by sulfate and magnesium ions. This can be supported by the observed reduction in the Ca/Si ratio of C–S–h gels, Ch crystal orientation index, and ***, through mechanisms such as pull-out, rupture, overlapping network, and internal anchor interface, SSWs effectively prevent microcrack growth and propagation, transforming single long-connected microcracks into multiple-emission microcracks centered on SSW. Additionally, the free chloride ion content of the composites at 28 and 180 d meets the ACI 318-19 standard requirements for concrete exposed to seawater. This compliance is attributed to the chloride immobilization facilitated by Friedel's salt and C–S–h gels within the interfaces around SSWs and sea-sand. Consequently, SSWs-reinforced UhPSSC exhibits considerable potential for applications in sustainable marine infrastructures, demanding long-term mechanical properties and high durability.

The impact of chemotherapy-naïve open radical cystectomy delay and perioperative transfusion on the recurrence-free survival: A perioperative parameters-based nomogram

Objective: To develop and internally validate a nomogram to predict recurrence-free survival (RFS) including the time to radical cystectomy (RC) and perioperative blood transfusion (PBT) as potential ***: Patients who underwent open RC and ileal conduit between January 1996 to December 2016 were split into developing (n=948) and validating (n=237) cohorts. The time to radical cystectomy (TTC) was defined as the interval between the onset of symptoms and RC. The regression coefficients of the independent predictors obtained by Cox regression were used to construct the nomogram. Discrimination, validation, and clinical usefulness in the validation cohort were assessed by the area under the curve, the calibration plot, and decision curve ***: In the developing dataset, the 1-, 5-, and 10-year RFS were 83.0%, 47.2%, and 44.4%, respectively. On multivariate analysis, independent predictors were TTC (hazards ratio [hR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.08, phR 1.40, 95% CI 1.03-1.90, p=0.03;two or more units: hR 1.72, 95% CI 1.29-2.29, phydronephrosis (hR 1.54, 95% CI 1.21-1.97, phR 0.60, 95% CI 0.45-0.81, p=0.001), pT3-T4 (hR 1.77, 95% CI 1.41-2.22, ph node status (hR 1.53, 95% CI 1.21-1.95, phovascular invasion (hR 1.28, 95% CI 1.01-1.62, p=0.044). The areas under the curve in the validation dataset were 79.3%, 69.6%, and 76.2%, for 1-, 5-, and 10-year RFS, respectively. Calibration plots showed considerable correspondence between predicted and actual survival probabilities. The decision curve analysis revealed a better net benefit of the ***: A nomogram with good discrimination, validation, and clinical utility was constructed utilizing TTC and PBT in addition to standard pathological criteria.

Effects of Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt on Renal and Pulmonary Function in hepatic Decompensation with and without hepatorenal and hepatopulmonary Syndromes:A Review
