Role of bacteria in carcinogenesis, with special reference to carcinoma of the gallbladder

Carcinoma of the gallbladder (CaGB) is the fifth commonest gastrointestinal tract cancer and is endemic in several countries. The interplay of genetic susceptibility, infections, and life style factors has been proposed to be responsible for carcinogenesis of gallbladder. Persistence of infection leading to chronic inflammation, and production of certain toxins and metabolites with carcinogenic potentials, by certain bacteria has been speculated to be involved in the transformation of the gallbladder epithelium. Therefore, any bacteria that have evolved to acquire both of the above carcinogenic mechanisms can cause cancer. salmonella typhi has been found to be prominently associated with CaGB. Chronic typhoid carriage (persistence) and production of mediators of chronic infl ammation and a genotoxic toxin (cytotoxic distending toxin, CdtB) are also known for this bacterium. Furthermore, the natural concentrating function of the gallbladder might amplify the carcinogenic effect of the mediators of carcinogenesis. In addition to s. typhi, certain species of Helicobacter (H. bilis and H. hepaticus) and Escherichia coli have also been implicated in carcinogenesis. As the isolation rate is verypoor with the presently available culture techniques, the existence of bacteria in a viable but non-cultivable state is quite likely; therefore, sensitive and specif ic molecular techniques might reveal the etiological role of bacterial infection in gallbladder carcinogenesis. If bacteria are found to be causing cancers, then eradication of such infections might help in reducing the incidence of some cancers.

Modelling of electric vehicle charging station and controlled by fuzzy logic controller with different modes of operation

The main objective of implementing charging stations is to ensure the good charging to theElectric Vehicles by using a solar PV array which is interconnected to the battery energy storagesystems. The charging station regulates the supply voltage and frequency without the use of amechanical speed governor. It also assures that energy gained from grid or by the DG set willhave the unity power factor (UPF) when the load is nonlinear. Besides this, the Point of CommonCoupling (PCC) voltage is synchronised with the grid/generator voltage in order to providecontinuous charging. In order to increase the optimal efficiency of the charging stations, thecharging stations will perform the active/reactive power transfer from the vehicle to grid, vehicleto house and vehicle to vehicle (V2V) power transfer. The operational experiment of the chargingstation is simulated and verified by using MATLAB/sIMULINK.

A series of novel flavonols were synthesized by cyclizing corresponding hydoxy chalcones using Algar flynn Oyamada reaction (1)The synthesized compounds were characterized by various spectrochemical methods including IR, MAss, NMR spectroscopy. Out of 13 compounds screened for antibacterial activity [2], compound VMF 12 (a bromo derivative) showed activity with an IC50value at 0.16μM against s. aureus.

Comparative clinical trial of s-pantoprazole versus racemic pantoprazole in the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease

AIM: To compare the effi cacy and tolerability of s-pan- toprazole (20 mg once a day) versus racemic Panto- prazole (40 mg once a day) in the treatment of gastro- esophageal reflux disease (GERD). METHODs: This multi-centre, randomized, double-blind clinical trial consisted of 369 patients of either sex suf- fering from GERD. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either one tablet (20 mg) of s-pantoprazole once a day (test group) or 40 mg racemic pantoprazole once a day (reference group) for 28 d. Patients were evaluated for reduction in baseline on d 0, GERD symptom score on d 14 and 28, occurrence of any adverse effect during the course of therapy. Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy was performed in 54 patients enrolled at one of the study centers at baseline and on d 28. REsULTs: signifi cant reduction in the scores (mean and median) for heart burn (P sea (P sphagia (P s achieved in both groups on d 14 with further reduction on continuing the therapy till 28 d. There was a statistically signifi cant difference in the proportion of patients showing improvement in acid regurgitation and bloating on d 14 and 28 (P = 0.004 for acid regurgitation; P = 0.03 for bloating) and heart burn on d 28 (P = 0.01) between the two groups, with a higher proportion in the test group than in the refer- ence group. Absolute risk reductions for heartburn/acid regurgitation/bloating were approximately 15% on d 14 and 10% on d 28. The relative risk reductions were 26%-33% on d 14 and 15% on d 28. GI endoscopy showed no signifi cant difference in healing of esophagitis (P = 1) and gastric erosions (P = 0.27) between the two groups. Use of Incremental Analysis Updates in 4D-Var Data Assimilation

The four-dimensional variational （4D-Var） data assimilation systems used in most operational and research centers use initial condition increments as control variables and adjust initial increments to find optimal analysis solutions. This approach may sometimes create discontinuities in analysis fields and produce undesirable spin ups and spin downs. This study explores using incremental analysis updates （IAU） in 4D-Var to reduce the analysis discontinuities. IAU-based 4D-Var has almost the same mathematical formula as conventional 4D-Var if the initial condition increments are replaced with time-integrated increments as control variables. The IAU technique was implemented in the NAsA/GsFC 4D-Var prototype and compared against a control run without IAU. The results showed that the initial precipitation spikes were removed and that other discontinuities were also reduced, especially for the analysis of surface temperature.
