Thyroid hormone excess secondary to global type 3 deiodinase(DIO3)deficiency leads to increased locomotor activity and reduced adiposity,but also to concurrent alterations in parameters of the leptin-melanocortin system that would predict *** distinguish the underlying contributions to the energy balance phenotype of Dlo3 deficiency,we generated mice with thyroid hormone excess targeted to pro-opiomelanocortin(POMC)-expressing cells via cell-specific DIO3 *** mice exhibit a male-specific phenotype of reduced hypothalamic Pomc expression,hyperphagia,and increased activity in brown adipose tissue,with adiposity and serum levels of leptin and thyroid hormones remained *** male mice also manifest a marked and widespread hypothalamic reduction in the expression of bone morphogenetic receptor 1a(BMPR1A),which has been shown to cause similar phenotypes when inactivated in PoMC-expressing *** results indicate that developmental overexposure to thyroid hormone in PoMC-expressing cells programs energy balance mechanisms in a sexually dimorphic manner by suppressing adult hypothalamic BMPR1A expression.

The article deals with the design and implementation of a flat filter tracking digital controller for a boost DC-DC power converter. A highly perturbed switched boost converter circuit is shown to be efficiently controlled, in a trajectory tracking task for its non-minimum phase output, by means of a suitable linear filter, here addressed as a flat filter. Flat filtering is a natural robust version of generalized proportional integral control （GPIC） by which the effects of arbitrary time varying exogenous disturbances, unknown endogenous nonlinearities and un-modeled dynamics can be jointly attenuated in a conceptually similar fashion to observer-based active disturbance rejection control （ADRC） and algebraic identification based model free control （MFC） but： a） without using extended state observers and b） respecting the original system order in a time-varying simplified model while avoiding algebraic estimation techniques. The proposed control technique based on the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor chip is tested by means of realistic simulations and experimental setup.

Phasor measurement units(PMUs)are fundamental tools in the applications of modern power systems,where synchronized phasor estimations are *** accuracy and dynamic performance requirements for phasor,frequency,and rate of change of frequency(ROCOF)estimations are established in the IEEE Std.C37.118.1-2011 along with the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 a-2014,where two PMU performances are suggested:P class filters for applications requiring fast response and M class filters for applications requiring high rejection to aliased *** this paper,a methodology to design new phasor estimators that satisfy the P class and M class requirements in PMUs is *** proposed methodology is based on finite impulse response filters,brick-wall filters,and complex filter design concepts,where frequency range,time performance,harmonic rejection and out-of-band interference requirements are considered in its design.A comparative analysis using the reference model given by the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 is *** results show the effectiveness of the phasor estimators under steady-state and dynamic conditions according to the PMU standard,making them suitable tools for applications in power systems.

The newly developed ＂MTS 1500＂ Melt Treatment System is performing the specifically required melt treatment operations like degassing, cleaning, modification and/or grain refinement by an automated process in one step and at the same location. This linked process is saving time, energy and metal losses allowing - by automated dosage of the melt treatment agents - the production of a consistent melt quality batch after batch. By linking the MTS Metal Treatment System with sensors operating on-line in the melt, i.e., with a hydrogen sensor ＂Alspek H＂, a fully automated control of parts of the process chain like degassing is possible. This technology does guarantee a pre-specified and documented melt quality in each melt treatment batch. Furthermore, to ensure that castings are consistent and predictable there is a growing realization that cdtical parameters such as metal cleanliness must be measured prior to casting. There exists accepted methods for measuring the cleanliness of an aluminum melt but these can be both slow and costly. A simple, rapid and meaningful method of measuring and bench marking the cleanliness of an aluminum melt has been developed to offer the foundry a practical method of measuring melt cleanliness. This paper shows the structure and performance of the integrated MTS melt treatment process and documents achieved melt quality standards after degassing, cleaning, modification and grain refinement operations under real foundry conditions. It also provides an insight on a melt cleanliness measuring device ＂Alspek MQ＂ to provide foundry men better tools in meeting the increasing quality and tighter specification demand from the industry.

Ifirst met Dr. Andrew V Schally （PhD, MDhc （Multi）, DSc, Distinguished Medical Research Scientist, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Professor of Pathology and Department of Medicine, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, Miami, Florida, USA） many years ago, probably around the beginning of the 1990＇s in one of his visits to Mexico City （Figure 1）. He has many friends in my country since some of the investigations that led to the development of the LHRH agonists were made in a couple of Mexican hospitals in collaboration with some outstanding Mexican physicians that I will mention later. In that time, I was the head of the Department of Urology of the Mexican National Cancer Institute and our Director, Dr. Jaime de la Garza, invited him for a meeting. I was surprised by his humbleness, intelligence and easy going personality, in spite of being a Nobel Prize scientist.

This paper develops an approach to control unstable nonlinear multi-inputs multi-output(MIMO) square plants using MIMO fractional order(FO) controllers. The controller design uses the linear time invariant(LTI) state space representation of the nonlinear model of the plant and the diagonal closedloop transfer matrix(TM) function to ensure decoupling between inputs. Each element of the obtained MIMO controller could be either a transfer function(TF) or a gain. A TF is associated in turn with its corresponding FO TF. For example, a D(Derivative) TF is related to a FO TF of the form Dδ, δ =[0, 1]. Two applications were performed to validate the developed approach via experimentation: control of the angular positions of a manipulator, and control of the car and arm positions of a translational manipulator.

It is well known that smart thermostats (STs) have become key devices in the implementation of smart homes;thus, they are considered as primary elements for the control of electrical energy consumption in households. Moreover, energy consumption is drastically affected when the end users select unsuitable STs or when they do not use the STs correctly. Furthermore, in future, Mexico will face serious electrical energy challenges that can be considerably resolved if the end users operate the STs in a correct manner. Hence, it is important to carry out an in-depth study and analysis on thermostats, by focusing on social aspects that influence the technological use and performance of the thermostats. This paper proposes the use of a signal detection theory (SDT), fuzzy detection theory (FDT), and chi-square (CS) test in order to understand the perceptions and beliefs of end users about the use of STs in Mexico. This paper extensively shows the perceptions and beliefs about the selected thermostats in Mexico. Besides, it presents an in-depth discussion on the cognitive perceptions and beliefs of end users. Moreover, it shows why the expectations of the end users about STs are not met. It also promotes the technological and social development of STs such that they are relatively more accepted in complex electrical grids such as smart grids.

Two-phase flow in porous media is a very active field of research,due to its important applications in groundwater pollution,CO_(2)sequestration,or oil and gas production from petroleum reservoirs,just to name a few of *** flow equations,which make use of Darcy's law,for describing the movement of two immiscible fluids in a porous medium,are among the most relevant mathematical models in reservoir *** work aims to solve a fractional flow model formed by an elliptic equation,representing the spatial distribution of the pressure,and a hyperbolic equation describing the space-time evolution of water *** numerical solution of the elliptic part is obtained using a finite-element(FE)scheme,while the hyperbolic equation is solved by means of two dif-ferent numerical approaches,both in the finite-volume(FV)*** is based on a monotonic upstream-centered scheme for conservation laws(MUSCL)-Hancock scheme,whereas the other makes use of a weighted essentially non-oscillatory(ENO)*** both cases,a first-order centered(FORCE)-αnumerical scheme is applied for inter-cell flux reconstruction,which constitutes a new contribution in the field of fractional flow models describing oil-water movement.A relevant feature of this work is the study of the effect of the parameterαon the numerical solution of the models *** also show that,in the FORCE-αmethod,when the parameterαincreases,the errors diminish and the order of accuracy is more properly attained,as verified using a manufactured solution technique.

Mentum deformities in chironomids have been commonly used as indicators of metal contamination in freshwater *** of these deformities suggests sublethal effects and can provide early signals of environmental *** anthropogenic metal pollution is known to lead to an increase in deformities in chironomids,natural background deformity incidence information is key to their effective use as biomonitoring *** we explore the incidence of deformities from 5000 Tanytarsus(Diptera,Chironomidae)menta in relation to water physicochemical,and sediment metal(Al,As,Cu,Fe,Mn,Pb,Zn)concentration data from numerous sites in the naturally metal-rich Sonora River(NW Mexico)obtained over a two-year *** metal concentrations were found in the upper *** salinity,total suspended solids and conductivity were found in the lower *** As and Cu were occasionally found above published threshold effect levels(TEL).The proportion of deformities(%D)was low(2.1%)and a generalized linear model only explained 25.36%of%D variability among samples;this model included several physicochemical *** only metal significantly related to deformities was *** significant spatial and temporal variability in all metal concentrations and other physicochemical parameters in the basin,we were unable to explain a strong relationship between metal concentration and deformity *** results,based on consistent%D quantification from 5000 samples from a single taxon,suggest that natural variation in metal concentrations,even when statistically significant,is not associated with notable variations in the incidence of deformities.
