Visible fluorescence of biological fluids as a renal failure marker:New integrative approach

Solid phases of visible fuorescence substance(VFS)of biological fuids(blood,urine,hemodia-lysate)which was proposed earlier as a morbidity and mortality marker by renal failure and diabetes were investigated in-depth by the methods of electron and confocal microscopy,optical spectroscopy and matrix assisted laser desorption-ionization(MALDi)mass *** is shown that dry VFS exists predominantly in the form of carbon-oxygen-nitrogen(N≈8.7 wt.%)nanoparticles(NPs)(5≤d≤100nm).For the first time the existence of the threshold energy E_(g)≈2.15eV for excitation of VFS was observed experimentally and confirmed by semi empirical calculations of the bathochromic shift.A good accordance with the earlier autonomous theo-retical calculations was ***,the long wavelength limit(575 nm)of the spectral range where the VFS can be used as a fluorescent marker was reliably determined.A pilot MALDi comparative study of graphene oxide(GO)and urine VFS was carried *** kinds of nitrogen-free particles(412≤M≤456 Da)were observed in each substance and possible computer models of those have been *** is established that along with nitrogen-containing advanced glycation end products(AGEs)also nitrogen-fee carbon-oxygen-lhydrogen particles(probably toxic)with the composition and structure related to GO can exist in *** types of particles should be taken into account in search for the reasons of high mortality among end stage renal disease patients.

Protective and water-repellent properties of alkylcarboxylic and alkylphosphonic acid films on technically pure magnesium

The formation of superhydrophobic coatings using low-toxicity corrosion inhibitors is a promising method for corrosion protection of metals and alloys. in this study, the effects of surface roughness and the of the adsorbed substance structure on wettability and corrosion resistance of commercially pure magnesium were investigated. Surface roughness was created by three different methods: paper grinding,etching in nitric acid solution and laser treatment. Oleic, stearic and octadecylphosphonic acids were investigated as potential surface modifiers for the formation of corrosion resistant superhydrophobic coatings. it has been shown that the protective and hydrophobic properties of acid films on magnesium, as well as their stability, are determined by both the initial surface morphology and the nature of the ***, the laser treatment was found to be preferable to mechanical and chemical surface preparation and the best hydrophobic agent among the studied acids is phosphonic acid. The most stable films with excellent superhydrophobic and protective properties in atmospheres of high humidity and salt spray clamber are formed in a solution of 0.001 M octadecylphosphonic acid on the surface of magnesium with high roughness. in addition, the effect of vinyltrimethoxysilane on the protective and hydrophobic properties of stearic acid and octadecylphosphonic acid films was investigated. The results of direct corrosion tests and wetting contact angle degradation kinetics studies showed that the protective and hydrophobic properties of stearic acid can be enhanced by its layer-by-layer adsorption with *** practically reach the parameters of octadecylphosphonic acid.

High resolution multispectral spatial light modulators based on tunable Fabry-Perot nanocavities

Spatial light modulators(SLMs)are the most relevant technology for dynamic wavefront *** find diverse applications ranging from novel displays to optical and quantum *** commercial SLMs for phase modulation,Liquid Crystal on Silicon(LCoS)offers the smallest pixel size and,thus,the most precise phase mapping and largest field of view(FOV).Further pixel miniaturization,however,is not possible in these devices due to inter-pixel cross-talks,which follow from the high driving voltages needed to modulate the thick liquid crystal(LC)cells that are necessary for full phase *** introduced metasurface-based SLMs provide means for pixel miniaturization by modulating the phase via resonance *** devices,however,are intrinsically monochromatic,limiting their use in applications requiring multi-wavelength ***,we introduce a novel design allowing small pixel and multi-spectral *** on LC-tunable Fabry-Perot nanocavities engineered to support multiple resonances across the visible range(including red,green and blue wavelengths),our design provides continuous 2π phase modulation with high reflectance at each of the operating ***,we realize a device with 96 pixels(~1 μm pitch)that can be individually addressed by electrical *** it,we first demonstrate multi-spectral programmable beam steering with FOV~18° and absolute efficiencies exceeding 40%.Then,we reprogram the device to achieve multi-spectral lensing with tunable focal distance and efficiencies~27%.Our design paves the way towards a new class of SLM for future applications in displays,optical computing and beyond.

Bound-states-in-the-continuum(BiC)is an emerging concept in nanophotonics with potential impact in applications,such as hyperspectral imaging,mirror-less lasing,and nonlinear harmonic *** true BiC modes are nonradiative,they cannot be excited by using propagating light to investigate their optical *** this paper,for the 1st time,we map out the strong near-field localization of the true BiC resonance on arrays of silicon nanoantennas,via electron energy loss spectroscopy with a sub-1-nm electron *** systematically breaking the designed antenna symmetry,emissive quasi-BiC resonances become *** gives a unique experimental tool to determine the coherent interaction length,which we show to require at least six neighboring antenna *** importantly,we demonstrate that quasi-BiC resonances are able to enhance localized light emission via the Purcell effect by at least 60 times,as compared to unpatterned *** work is expected to enable practical applications of designed,ultra-compact BiC antennas such as for the controlled,localized excitation of quantum emitters.

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. On 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing CO_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of CO_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

Calculation of Surface Energy of Metals and Alloys by theElectron Density Functional Method

The surface energy of (100), (110), (111) surfaces in Ni, Al and ordered alloys NiAl and Ni//3Al has been calculated within the framework of methodology based upon the electron density functional method. The results of calculations are in good agreement with the known for pure metals experimental data and in case of Ni//3Al alloy. There is also a good agreement with the results obtained by calculation using the embedded atom method. The investigation has been carried out in this work to show that the surface energy sigma of alloys can not be interpreted as an averaged concentration sigma of pure metals. For NiAl, the obtained results reveal considerable distinctions in anisotropy of sigma in comparison to the anisotropy of surface energy in pure metals. (Edited author abstract) 8 Refs.

Laminar Forced Convection in Curved Channel with Vortex Structures

Theoretical and experimental investigations of heat transfer in flat curvilinear channel have been carried out. Linear and non-linear effects of Dean vortexes on intensity of heat transfer were taken into account. The linear effect, which describe harmonic (sinuous) variation of the heat transfer coefficient near the concave surface of the channel and the non-linear effect causes the general increase of the heat transfer coefficient due to augmentation of heat transfer engendered by the Dean vortexes. For both effects, mathematical relations were obtained in the form of quadratures. These numerical results were modified to the form convenient in engineering calculations. The investigations have shown that both linear and nonlinear components grow up with the Dean number. Nonlinear component Q0T increases more abruptly, while the linear one Q1T is more conservative. This is a confirmation of stability of vortex structures.

introduction to investigations of the negative corona and EHD flow in gaseous two-phase fluids

Research interests have recently been directed towards electrical discharges in multi-phase *** electrical discharges,such as lightning and coronas,occur in the Earth＇s atmosphere,which is actually a mixture of gaseous phase（air） and suspended solid and liquid particulate matters（PMs）.An example of an anthropogenic gaseous multi-phase environment is the flow of flue gas through electrostatic precipitators（ESPs）,which are generally regarded as a mixture of a post-combustion gas with solid PM and microdroplets suspended in *** discharges in multi-phase environments,the knowledge of which is scarce,are becoming an attractive research subject,offering a wide variety of possible discharges and multi-phase environments to be *** paper is an introduction to electrical discharges in multi-phase *** is focused on DC negative coronas and accompanying electrohydrodynamic（EHD） flows in a gaseous two-phase fluid formed by air（a gaseous phase） and solid PM（a solid phase）,run under laboratory *** introduction is based on a review of the relevant *** cases will be considered：the first case is of a gaseous two-phase fluid,initially motionless in a closed chamber before being subjected to a negative corona（with the needle-toplate electrode arrangement）,which afterwards induces an EHD flow in the chamber,and the second,of a gaseous two-phase fluid flowing transversely with respect to the needle-to-plate electrode axis along a chamber with a corona discharge running between the *** review-based introductory paper should be of interest to theoretical researchers and modellers in the field of negative corona discharges in single-or two-phase fluids,and for engineers who work on designing EHD devices（such as ESPs,EHD pumps,and smoke detectors）.

The impact of Bed Temperature on Heat Transfer Characteristic between Fluidized Bed and Vertical Rifled Tubes

in the present work,the heat transfer study focuses on assessment of the impact of bed temperature on the local heat transfer characteristic between a fluidized bed and vertical rifled tubes(38mm-O.D.) in a commercial circulating fluidized bed(CFB) *** transfer behavior in a 1296t/h supercritical CFB furnace has been analyzed for Geldart B particle with Sauter mean diameter of 0.219 and 0.246 *** heat transfer experiments were conducted for the active heat transfer surface in the form of membrane tube with a longitudinal fin at the tube crest under the normal operating conditions of CFB boiler.A heat transfer analysis of CFB boiler with detailed consideration of the bed-to-wall heat transfer coefficient and the contribution of heat transfer mechanisms inside furnace chamber were investigated using mechanistic heat transfer model based on cluster renewal *** predicted values of heat transfer coefficient are compared with empirical correlation for CFB units in large-scale.
