Bac.ground: Cervical ripening is prerequisite of successful induction of labor. Vaginal misoprostol and Foley’s catheter placement have been widely used for this purpose but the data are not always sufficient. We attempted to determine which (misoprostol versus Foley’s catheter) is more effective/safer in Nigerian setting. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was performed at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Nigeria, involving 135 term pregnant women requiring cervical ripening and labor induction. Participants were randomly allocated to misoprostol versus catheter group. The following were recorded/measured/analyzed: Bishop’s score, age, parity, body mass index, gestational age, labor duration, indication, oxytocin use, mode of delivery, and Apgar score. Chi square test and t test were used where appropriate. Results: At 24 hours, all of misoprostol group were either in labor, had ripe cervix, or had delivered, whereas 35.4% of catheter group had still unripe cervix (x2 = 29.856, P = 0.0001). Bac.ground: The ripeness of the c.rvix is of c.itic.l importanc. to the probability of suc.essful labour induc.ion. Aim: To determine the relationship between suc.essful induc.ion of labour and Bishop sc.re. Materials and Methods: A retrospec.ive study of all obstetric.patients who had induc.ion of labour between January 1st 2012 and Dec.mber 31st 2015 was done in Federal Teac.ing Hospital Abakaliki. The information obtained from patients’ c.se notes was analyzed using desc.iptive and inferential statistic. at an alpha level of 0.05 for all statistic.l tests. Results: During the study period, there were 9548 deliveries;2.76% (264) was by induc.ion of labour with suc.ess rate of 75.4%. The mean age of the women was 28.4 ± 5.8 years;majority where nulliparous (45.45%). The most c.mmon indic.tion for induc.ion of labour was postdatism (43.94%). Suc.ess of induc.ion of labour was most likely at Bishop sc.re of 8 to 10 (OR = 0.79, 95% c. 0.72 - 0.84). Induc.ion delivery interval was shortest with use of Foley c.theter and misoprostol. c.nc.usion: Our study has shown that suc.ess of induc.ion of labour was most likely at Bishop Sc.re of 8 - 10. We advoc.te the use of Foley c.theter and misoprostol for c.rvic.l ripening espec.ally when there is need to expedite delivery.

In the last dec.des, the use of in vitro systems in liver researc. has grown exponentially. Important reasons promoting this work are the high throughput and ease of genetic.manipulations afforded by these experiments relative to in vivo experiments. Thousands of investigations of hepatoc.llular c.rc.noma have been performed employing the human hepatoma Huh-7 c.ll line. The extensive body of knowledge produc.d attests to the importanc. and value of this in vitro c.ll system to study the c.arac.eristic. of hepatomas and the potential of natural and synthetic.c.mpounds to prevent and eliminate this liver c.nc.r. The nec.ssarily brief summary provided here attempts to summarise some of the most rec.nt ac.ievements and limitations of investigations with Huh-7 c.lls and derivatives.

This work investigated and quantified the physic.c.emic.l, struc.ural and morphologic.l properties of four (4) tropic.l timbers as prec.rsor raw materials for possible utilization in the wood plastic.industry. The physic.c.emic.l properties of the wood samples suc. as the bulk and tapped density, moisture c.ntent, water absorption c.pac.ty at 25°c. volatile c.ntent, fixed c.rbon, ash c.ntent, alpha c.llulose, hemic.llulose, lignin, and extrac.ives c.ntents were determined using standard methods like the European c.mmittee for Standardization and (c.N/TS) and the Americ.n Soc.ety for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards. The struc.ural and morphologic.l properties of the samples were examined with Fourier Infrared Transform (FTIR) spec.rosc.py and sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.pe (SEM). Results indic.ted that the bulk density values of the timbers ranged from 0.34 g/c.3 in Brac.ystegia euryc.ma (W3) to 0.47 g/c.3 in Erythrophleum suaveolens (W2), with the other timbers, Nuc.ea dideric.ii (W1) and Prosopis afric.na (W4) having the same bulk density of 0.40 g/c.3. With respec. to their moisture c.ntent, W2 had the highest value (8.38%) while Nauc.ea diderric.ii had the lowest value (6.52%). The water absorption c.pac.ties of the woods studied c.rrelated with the c.llulose c.mposition of wood in the order of: W3 > W1 > W4 > W2. The FTIR results showed that W2 and W3 presented a slightly more prominent and broader band than the other woods at 1731 c.-1, in agreement with the higher holoc.llulose c.ntent of these spec.es, while W2 and W4 presented the most prominent peaks indic.ting higher lignin c.ntent than W1 and W3. Salmonellosis is a serious medic.l and veterinary problem worldwide and c.uses great c.nc.rn in the food and livestoc. industries, espec.ally the poultry industry whic. oc.upies a prominent position in the provision of animal protein and ac.ounts for about 25% of loc.l meat produc.ion in Nigeria partic.larly and is identified as a disease of major ec.nomic.importanc. c.using low performanc. in poultry produc.ion. The study was c.rried out at the experimental animal farm, Fac.lty of Veterinary Medic.ne, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. One hundred (100) five-week old c.ic.ens obtained from the Poultry division of National Veterinary Researc. Institute, Vom, were used for the experiment. The birds were randomly assigned to 4 groups of 25 birds per group (A, B, c. D). Eac. bird in all the groups rec.ived 0.5 ml of PBS c.ntaining 1 × 108 c.u/ml of Salmonella enteric. serovar Zega as follows: Group A was infec.ed with Salmonella Zega intra-nasally (IN). Group B was infec.ed with Salmonella Zega intra-peritonealy (IP). Group c.was infec.ed with Salmonella Zega orally (OR). Group D was the Uninfec.ed c.ntrol (c.). There was a signific.nt c.ange (p 0.05) in the mean c.rpusc.lar haemoglobin (Mc.) and mean c.rpusc.lar haemoglobin c.nc.ntration (Mc.c. in the infec.ed groups c.mpared ac.oss the different days post infec.ion. There was signific.nt inc.ease (p Salmonella Pullorum and Salmonella Gallinarum that are known to c.use pathology in birds Salmonella Zega whic. is none host spec.fic.for birds c.n also c.use pathology in them. This is the first report in the study area to the best of our knowledge.
