INTRODUCTION Green roofs are touted as an environmental technology for urban areas due to their many benefi ts(Lundholm et al.2008).Although the design and the benefi ts have been reported in many reports and articles,they are reviewed here for those who are unfamiliar with this *** roofs,or more formally,green roof infrastructure,is a technology that allows for the growth of vegetation on a roof while protecting the building envelope from leakage and root penetration.A green roof is more than a layer of soil piled on the roof,planted in the way that you might plant a *** technology consists of multiple layers that include the plants and growing medium or substrate,but also a drainage layer for storing water that was not used by the plants and a waterproof,root-repellent membrane(Figure 1).

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens is a pest of cultivated rice through- out Asia and is controlled using insecticides and/or resistant rice varieties. This species has developed resistance to many classes of insecticide and biotypes have developed that are vir- ulent against formerly resistant rice cultivars. Insects use a suite of detoxification enzymes, including cytochrome P450s, glutathione S-transferases and carboxyl/cholinesterases to defend themselves against plant secondary metabolites and pesticides. Pyrosequencing on the Roche 454-FLX platform was used to produce a substantial expressed sequence tag （EST） dataset to complement the existing Sanger sequenced ESTs in GenBank. A total of 78 959 reads were combined with the 37 392 publically available Sanger ESTs; these assembled into 8 911 contigs and 10 620 singletons. Analysis of the distribution of tenta- tive unique genes （TUGs） with the gene ontology for biological processes and molecular functions suggests that the 454 and Sanger EST assembly is broadly representative of the N. lugens transcriptome. The brown planthopper transcriptome was found to contain 31 TUGs encoding P450s, nine encoding glutathione S-transferases and 26 encoding car- boxyl/cholinesterases and many of these are putatively involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics. The Agilent eArray platform was used to construct an oligonucleotide mi- croarray populated with probes for ~ 19 000 unigene sequences, including all those known to encode detoxification enzymes. The genomic resources developed in this study will be useful to the community studying this crop pest and will help elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying insecticide resistance and planthopper adaptation to resistant rice cultivars.

This paper discusses some of the concept of modeling surgery outcome. It is also an attempt to offer a road map for progress. This paper may serve as a common ground of discussion for both communities i.e surgeons and computational scientist in its broadest sense. Predicting surgery outcome is a very difficult task. All patients are different, and multiple factors such as genetic, or environment conditions plays a role. The difficulty is to construct models that are complex enough to address some of these significant multiscale elements and simple enough to be used in clinical conditions and calibrated on patient data. We will pro- vide a multilevel progressive approach inspired by two applications in surgery that we have been working on. One is about vein graft adaptation after a transplantation, the other is the recovery of cosmesis outcome after a breast lumpectomy. This work, that is still very much in progress, may teach us some lessons. We are convinced that the digital revolution that is transforming the working environment of the surgeon makes closer collaboration between surgeons and computational scientist unavoidable. We believe that ＂computational surgery＂ will allow the community to develop predictive model of the surgery outcome and greatprogresses in surgery procedures that goes far beyond the operating room procedural aspect.

0-3 dielectric composites with high dielectric constants have received great interest for various technological *** achievements have been made in the development of high performance of 0-3 composites,which can be classified into dielectric–dielectric(DDCs)and conductor–dielectric composites(CDCs).However,predicting the dielectric properties of a composite is still a challenging problem of both theoretical and practical ***,the physical aspects of 0-3 dielectric composites are *** limitation of current understanding and new developments in the physics of dielectric properties for dielectric composites are *** is indicated that the current models cannot explain well the physical aspects for the dielectric properties of 0-3 dielectric *** the CDCs,experimental results show that there is a need to find new equations/models to predict the percolative behavior incorporating more parameters to describe the behavior of these *** the DDCs,it is indicated that the dielectric loss of each constituent has to be considered,and that it plays a critical role in the determination of the dielectric response of these types of *** differences in the loss of the constituents can result in a higher dielectric constant than both of the constituents combined,which breaks the Wiener limits.

The rice stem borer,Chilo suppressalis,has developed a high level of resistance to many of the compounds currently used for *** is therefore an urgent need to develop novel control methods for *** chitin synthases(CHS)have attracted interest as a potential target for insect pest ***,to date,CHS have not been characterized in *** CHS genes(CsCHSI and CsCHS2)were identified and cloned from *** transcript variants were identified for CsCHS1,CsCHSla and *** expression profiling showed that both transcripts of CsCHS1 are most highly expressed on the last day of each larval instar stage and show the highest expression levels in the *** contrast,CsCHS2 is predominantly expressed during the larval feeding stages and shows the highest expression levels in the *** of CsCHSI by RNA interference significantly inhibited the molting and pupation of ***,and knockdown of CsCHS2 significantly affected growth during the larval stage,but had no significant effect on the ***,knockout of CsCHS1 by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing severely lowered the hatching rate,larval survivorship,pupation rate,and eclosion rate,but only larval survivorship at the GO generation was lowered after the knockout of *** results demonstrate that CsCHS1 and CsCHS2 play vital roles in the growth and development of ***,and so have potential as insecticidal targets for the control of this highly damaging pest.

The characteristics of the electromechanical response observed in an ionic-electroactive polymer(i-EAP)are represented by the time(t)dependence of its bending actuation(y).The electromechanical response of a typical i-EAP—poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)doped with lithium perchlorate(LP)—is *** shortcomings of all existing models describing the electromechanical response obtained in i-EAPs are discussed.A more reasonable model:y=y_(max)^(e-T/t)is introduced to characterize this time dependence for all *** advantages and correctness of this model are confirmed using results obtained in PEO-LP actuators with different LP contents and at different *** applicability and universality of this model are validated using the reported results obtained from two different i-EAPs:one is Flemion and the other is polypyrrole actuators.
