Structural changes of a Tropical cyclone during Landfall: β-plane Simulations

This study investigated the effects of landfall on the structure of a tropical cyclone （Tc）. Numerical simulations were performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model on a β-plane. Two landfall experiments, one with an east–west and another with a north–south oriented coastline, were performed. Similar to previous studies on an f-plane, large-scale flows in the low-to-middle troposphere were modified due to friction. A pair of counter rotating gyres was found, which was shown to be consistent with the slight deffection of the Tc relative to the control experiment without land. compared to previous f-plane simulations, because of the inherent asymmetries due to the β-gyres, the large-scale pattern of flows and convergences/divergences related to friction were found to depend on coastline orientations. On the other hand, regardless of the coastline orientation, convergences were found to be stronger to the left for both cases near landfall, as in previous f-plane simulations. Such a convergence pattern subsequently induced a change in convection and rainfall at the eyewall.

Ballistic current induced effective force on magnetic domain wall

The collective dynamics of magnetic domain wall under electric current is studied in the form of spin transfer torque(STT). The out-of-plane STT induced effective force is obtained based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert(LLG) equation including microscopic STT terms. The relation between microscopic calculations and collective description of the domain wall motion is established. With our numerical calculations based on tight binding free electron model, we find that the non adiabatic out-of-plane torque components have considerable non-local properties. It turns out that the calculated effective forces decay significantly with increasing domain wall widths.

Modern treatment of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are rare mesenchymal smooth muscle sarcomas that can arise anywhere within the gastrointestinal tract. Sporadic mutations within the tyrosine kinase receptors of the interstitial cells of cajal have been identified as the key molecular step in GIST carcinogenesis. Although many patients are asymptomatic, the most common associated symptoms include: abdominal pain, dyspepsia, gastric outlet obstruction, and anorexia. Rarely, GIST can perforate causing life-threatening hemoperitoneum. Most are ultimately diagnosed on cross-sectional imaging studies (i.e., computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging in combination with upper endoscopy. Endoscopic ultrasonographic localization of these tumors within the smooth muscle layer and acquisition of neoplastic spindle cells harboring mutations in the c-kIT gene is pathognomonic. curative treatment requires a complete gross resection of the tumor. Both open and minimally invasive operations have been shown to reduce recurrence rates and improve long-term survival. While there is considerable debate over whether GIST can be benign neoplasms, we believe that all GIST have malignant potential, but vary in their propensity to recur after resection and metastasize to distant organ sites. Prognostic factors include location, size (i.e., > 5 cm), grade (> 5-10 mitoses per 50 high power fields and specific mutational events that are still being defined. Adjuvant therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as imatinib mesylate, has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence after one year of therapy. Treatment of locally-advanced or borderline resectable gastric GIST with neoadjuvant imatinib has been shown to induce regression in a minority of patients and stabilization in the majority of cases. Generating diverse motor behaviors critical for survival is a challenge that confronts the central nervous system(cNS)of all *** movement execution,the cNS performs complex calculations to control a large number of neuromusculoskeletal *** theory of modular motor control proposes that spinal interneurons are organized in discrete modules that can be linearly combined to generate a variety of behavioral *** modules have been previously represented as stimulus-evoked force fields(FFs)comprising isometric limb-endpoint forces across workspace ***,we ask whether FFs elicited by different stimulations indeed represent the most elementary units of motor control or are themselves the combination of a limited number of even more fundamental motor *** probe for potentially more elementary modules,we optogenetically stimulated the lumbosacral spinal cord of intact and spinalized Thy1-chR2 transgenic mice(n=21),eliciting FFs from as many single stimulation loci as possible(20-70 loci per mouse)at minimally necessary *** found that the resulting varieties of FFs defied simple categorization with just a few *** used gradient descent to further decompose the FFs into their underlying basic force fields(BFFs),whose linear combination explained FF *** mice,we identified 4-5 BFFs with partially localizable but overlapping representations along the spinal *** BFFs were structured and topographically distributed in such a way that a rostral-to-caudal traveling wave of activity across the lumbosacral spinal cord may generate a swing-to-stance gait *** BFFs may represent more rudimentary submodules that can be flexibly merged to produce a library of motor modules for building different motor behaviors.

Analysis of electron energy distribution function in a magnetically filtered complex plasma

The electron energy distribution function （EEDF） for a magnetically filtered dusty plasma is studied in a dusty double plasma device where the electron energy can be varied from 0.15 eV to ～ 2.8 eV and plasma density from 10 6 cm-3 to 10 9cm-3 . The characteristics of EEDF for these ranges of plasma parameters are investigated in a pristine plasma as well as in a dusty plasma. The results show that in the presence of dust, there is a drastic modification in EEDF patterns in a plasma with higher electron temperature and density than those in a low temperature and low density plasma produced by the magnetic filter.

Formation of TiN Grid on NiTi by Laser Gas Nitriding for Improving Wear Resistance in Hanks' Solution

Laser gas nitriding （LGN） is a common surface modification method to enhance the wear resistance of titanium （Ti） alloys, which are known to have poor tribological properties. In the present study, a titanium nitride （TIN） grid network was fabricated on the surface of nickel titanium （NiTi） by LGN. The laser processing parameters were selected to achieve nitriding without surface melting and hence to＇maintain a smooth surface finish. The characteristics of the grid-nitrided samples were investigated by scanningelectron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, 2-D profilometry, contact angle measurements and nanoindentation. The wear resistance of the nitrided samples was evaluated using reciprocating wear test against ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene （UHMWPE） in Hanks＇ solution. The results indicate that the wear rates of the grid-nitrided samples and the UHMWPE counter-body in the wear pair are both significantly reduced. The decrease in wear rates can be attributed to the combination of a hard TiN grid and a soft NiTi substrate. In Hanks＇ solution, the higher hydrophilicity of the nitrided samples also contributes to the better performance in wear test against hydrophobic UHMWPE.

Grain Size control of Semisolid A356 Alloy Manufactured by Electromagnetic Stirring

To investigate the possibility of substituting the mechanical stirring system with electromagnetic stirring (EMS) system for aluminum rheo die-casting, the EMS under the different stirring cooling conditions was carried out. It was found that in the early period of solidification, the dendrite breakages led to a fine primary phase. When dendrites grew coarsely, the effect of ripening on grain size overwhelmed that of dendrite breakage. It was also found that the high cooling rate favored large nucleation rate, and led to a fine primary phase. But high cooling rate also made the growth rate of the dendrite arm, which prevented the dendrite arm from being sheared off. Therefore there were a suitable stirring time and suitable cooling rate to obtain the best rheo die-casting structure. Qualified semisolid A356 aluminum alloy was successfully manufactured with short time EMS.

A smooth co-ordination control for a hybrid autonomous power system （HAPS） with battery energy storage （BES）

The standalone hybrid power system constitu- tes a synchronous generator driven by a diesel engine, renewable energy source （wind） apart from a battery energy storage system. A coherent control strategy to regulate the voltage and frequency of the standalone grid is proposed in this paper. The system is simulated using Matlab/Simulink for preliminary validation and further tested on a laboratory prototype which involves a TMS320LF2407A DSP controller to digitally implement the control strategy. The dynamic behavior of the system is perused through the direct connection of an induction machine. The control strategy is verified for step changes in load and variation in wind power.
