Thermal Hydraulic Analysis Improvement for the IEA-R1 Research Reactor and Fuel Assembly Design Modification

This paper presents the sequence of activities to improve the thermal hydraulic analysis of the IEA-R1 research reactor to operate in safe conditions after power upgrade from 2 to 5 MW and core size reduction from 30 to 24 fuel assemblies. A realistic analysis needs the knowledge of the actual operation conditions (heat flow, flow rates) beyond the geometric data and the uncertainties associated with manufacturing and measures. A dummy fuel assembly was designed and constructed to measure the actual flow rate through the core fuel assemblies and its pressure drop. First results showed that the flow distribution over the core is nearly uniform. Nevertheless, the values are below than the calculated ones and the core bypass flow rate is greater than those estimated previously. Based on this, several activities were performed to identify and reduce the bypass flow, such as reduction of the flow rate through the sample irradiators, closing some unnecessary secondary holes on the matrix plate, improvement in the primary flow rate system and better fit of the core components on the matrix plate. A sub-aquatic visual system was used as an important tool to detect some bypass flow path. After these modifications, the fuel assemblies flow rate increased about 13%. Additional tests using the dummy fuel assembly were carried out to measure the internal flow distribution among the rectangular channels. The results showed that the flow rate through the outer channels is 10% - 15% lower than the internal ones. The flow rate in the channel formed between two adjacent fuel assemblies is an estimated parameter and it is difficult to measure because this is an open channel. A new thermal hydraulic analysis of the outermost plates of the fuel assemblies takes into account all this information. Co-Creation in the Game Industry:A Case Study in a Brazilian Developer

The objective of this work is to understand how the process of co-creation occurs within the creative industry of video games. For this, concepts of the creative industry, co-creation, information and communication technologies (ICTs) and innovation were studied. Since this is an exploratory and qualitative research, a single case study was chosen as a method. The analysis was done in a Brazilian company that develops games for mobile devices. The results show that the consumer (gamer) participates in value creation in the company’s products, mainly in the initial production stages. In the later phases, after the launch and other steps of the life cycle, although there is a relationship with the users, the joint creation of value is little explored by the organization. Also, it was verified that the co-creation process is supported by different information and communication tools, which provide agility to the process.

Effect of the Application of Produced Water on the Growth, the Concentration of Minerals and Toxic Compounds in Tomato under Greenhouse

During the production of petroleum and gas a by-product, known as congenital water, is obtained, which varies in composition depending on the geological formation from which it is extracted. In the industrial process its composition is modified and then it is known as “produced water”. These waters can contain high concentrations of mineral salts that can potentially be used for crop fertilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the application of produced water on the mineral contents of the plants and levels of BTEX and TPH in the fruits of greenhouse tomato cultivation. The produced waters used were derived from gas producing zone of Sabinas-Piedras Negras in northern Mexico. These waters were analyzed according to NOM-143-SEMARNAT-2003. Waters from three different stations, (Buena Suerte, Forasteros and Monclova 1), were mixed with fresh water to obtain the treatment waters used. As a control, we used a complete Steiner solution. The results showed that the produced waters modified the absorption of essential minerals in tomato plants;it was observed that the mineral concentration in plant tissues was highest in the control plants, except for Na, in which the plants irrigated with produced water had the highest concentrations. The treatments with produced waters also affected negatively the root length, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, number of fruits per plant, and the dry weight of the fruits.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic drainage remains the treatment of choice for unresectable or inoperable malignant distal biliary obstruction(MDBO).AIM To compare the safety and efficacy of plastic stent(PS)vs self-expanding metal stent(SEMS)placement for treatment of *** This meta-analysis was developed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines.A comprehensive search was performed in MEDLINE,Cochrane,Embase,Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature,and grey literature to identify randomized clinical trials(RCTs)comparing clinical success,adverse events,stent dysfunction rate,reintervention rate,duration of stent patency,and mean *** difference(RD)and mean difference(MD)were calculated and heterogeneity was assessed with I2 *** analyses were performed by SEMS *** Twelve RCTs were included in this study,totaling 1005 *** was no difference in clinical success(RD=-0.03,95%confidence interval[CI]:-0.01,0.07;I 2=0%),rate of adverse events(RD=-0.03,95%CI:-0.10,0.03;I2=57%),and mean patient survival(MD=-0.63,95%CI:-18.07,19.33;I2=54%)between SEMS vs PS ***,SEMS placement was associated with a lower rate of reintervention(RD=-0.34,95%CI:-0.46,-0.22;I2=57%)and longer duration of stent patency(MD=125.77 d,95%CI:77.5,174.01).Subgroup analyses revealed both covered and uncovered SEMS improved stent patency compared to PS(RD=152.25,95%CI:37.42,267.07;I2=98%and RD=101.5,95%CI:38.91,164.09;I2=98%;respectively).Stent dysfunction was higher in the covered SEMS group(RD=-0.21,95%CI:-0.32,-0.1;I²=205%),with no difference in the uncovered SEMS group(RD=-0.08,95%CI:-0.56,0.39;I²=87%).CONCLUSION While both stent types possessed a similar clinical success rate,complication rate,and patient-associated mean survival for treatment of MDBO,SEMS were associated with a longer duration of stent patency compared to PS.

Effect of Oocyte Recovery Techniques on in Vitro Production of Swine Embryos

In Vitro production of swine embryos is a valuable tool to generate clones and genetically modified pigs during a short period of time. However, the efficiency of the existing methods is extremely low and the oocyte quality and quantity represent important obstacles on the success of in Vitro production of embryos. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the in Vitro maturation, fertilization and subsequent embryo development rates of oocytes recovered by ovary slicing or follicular aspiration. The oocyte recovery rate (grade 1 COC/ovary) was higher (p = 0.0083) in the slicing group when compared to the aspiration group. No differences were observed between groups regarding in Vitro maturation and early cleavage rates. A higher percentage of oocytes recovered by follicular aspiration reached the blastocyst stage after IVF when compared to the ovary slicing method (p = 0.0395). However, no difference on blastocyst cell number was observed. Although the recovery of oocytes using the slicing technique yielded more grade 1 oocytes per ovary than the aspiration method, the number of oocytes that reached the blastocyst stage after IVF by the slicing method was lower when compared with oocytes obtained by aspiration, as observed by lower blastocyst rates. In conclusion, the follicular aspiration is the method of choice for porcine in Vitro embryo production.

Conservative management of a recurrent puerperal uterine inversion with bakri<sup>®</sup>balloon tamponade

Puerperal Uterine Inversion (PUI) is a rare but potentially life-threatening delivery complication in which the uterine fundus collapses within the endometrial cavity. This “glove-finger” introflexion of uterine walls generally occurs as an immediate postpartum complication and is responsible of different degrees of vaginal bleeding, shock and hypogastric pain that can cause serious maternal complications, including death. There are few reports of recurrent postpartum uterine inversion like the one we present here, and its causes remain unclear. Early diagnosis of this complication is crucial as it is the only one measure that can allow a successful and conservative treatment: an inverse relationship between the time that uterus keeps inverted and the probability of repositioning has been firmly established. This case report describes the exceptional and innovative use of the SOS Bakri? balloon (Cook Medical Incorporated) in the management of a recurrent puerperal uterine inversion. To our knowledge it is one of the first reports in the world of this procedure, perhaps the second one after Soleymani’s et al description;and the first one in a third degree recurrent puerperal uterine inversion.

Hepatitis C eradication with sofosbuvir leads to significant metabolic changes

AIMTo assess the effect of sofosbuvir (SOF) based regimens on glycemic and lipid control. METHODSThis is a retrospective analysis of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients treated and cured with a SOF regimen [SOF/ribavirin/interferon, SOF/simeprevir, or SOF/ledipasvir (LDV) ± ribavirin] from January 2014 to March 2015. Patients with hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) and lipid panels within six months before and six months after therapy were identified and included in our study. Due to the known hemolytic effect of ribavirin, HbA1C was obtained a minimum of three months post-treatment for the patients treated with a ribavirin regimen. Medical history, demographics, HCV genotype, pre-therapy RNA, and liver biopsies were included in our analysis. The patients who started a new medication or had an adjustment of baseline medical management for hyperlipidemia or diabetes mellitus (DM) were excluded from our analysis. RESULTSTwo hundred and thirty-four patients were reviewed, of which 60 patients met inclusion criteria. Sixty-three point three percent were male, 26.7% were Caucasian, 41.7% were African American and 91.7% were infected with hepatitis C genotype 1. Mean age was 60.6 ± 6.7 years. Thirty-nine patients had HbA1C checked before and after treatment, of which 22 had the diagnosis of DM type 2. HbA1C significantly decreased with treatment of HCV (pretreatment 6.66% ± 0.95% vs post-treatment 6.14% ± 0.65%, P vs 0.71% ± 0.83%, P = 0.070). Fifty-two patients had pre- and post-treatment lipid panels; there was a significant increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol (TC) after treatment (LDL: 99.5 ± 28.9 mg/dL vs 128.3 ± 34.9 mg/dL, P vs 199.7 ± 40.0 mg/dL, P P = 0.684). CONCLUSIONEradication of HCV with a SOF regimen resulted in a significant drop in HbA1C and an increase in LDL and TC post therapy.

Relevant Aspects of Expert Interest in the Perception of the Facial Aesthetic Damage

Forensic aesthetic facial damage—AFD expert’s valuation is a concerning matter in court as expressively vary in between experts. In fact, differences can be quite significant suggesting examiners age, sex and professional qualification may influence this valuation. Aiming to offer a systematic and more objective evaluation, some methods for assessing AFD had been proposed lately. Known as Aesthetic Impairment Impact Perception (AIPE), Cobo-Plana’s revised methodology (2010) was idealized to minimize the examiner’s subjectivity by means of answering an ordered sequence of questions related to the specific damage perception. This research aims to access AFD perception differences (simulated cases) in between Lawyers, Heath professionals (Physicians and Dental surgeons) and general professionals (laypeople) under AIPE methodology in order to allow a better comprehension of AFD when dealing with forensic expertise cases. Within Groups perceptions varied (p < 0.05) when evaluating lesions below “important” severity grade. Raters over 35 Years age scored higher AFD lesions, and rater’s sex (as an independent variable) did not express any significant difference in AFD scoring. The tendency of under-rating AFD lesions below very important severity grade was observed being a matter of major concern considered their prevalence and the effective consequences involved to the victim. These results recommend extra caution when performing AFD evaluation and consequently expertise reports, claiming a more judicious analysis based on consolidated standards and suggest, examiners to be more perceptive to physical damage evaluation in order to include social perceptions and reactions, mainly, victims feelings and constrains over their aesthetic loss.
