The Fabaceae(legume family) is one of the largest families of plants with a worldwide distribution and a major role in agriculture and in agroforestry.A hard seed coat impermeable to water is a typical feature of several *** dormancy delays and reduces germination so that mechanical,physical and chemical scarification methods have been classically used to break seed dormancy of many *** evaluate the effectiveness of a methodology to scarify seeds of several woody Fabaceae of ecological and economical importance,including Robinia pseudoacacia and Acacia dealbata and the shrubs Cytisus scoparius,*** and Ulex *** describe the optimized use of a handheld rotary tool(HRT),and compare its effectiveness with other scarification methods reported to break dormancy such as boiling or dry *** germination and/or speed of germination were enhanced after the application of the HRT,with germination percentages significantly higher than those achieved by other methods of *** on a thorough literature review,a mode of action for the HRT is suggested which could operate by breaking the physical and physiological dormancy of treated seeds through thecombined action of coat abrasion and moderate *** these results,we recommend the application of this rapid,effective,low-cost and highly reproducible HRT method to break seed dormancy and enhance germination of these species and others with similar dormancy constraints.

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage（78.33%）, hydrophobicity rate（62.67%）, and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil（reduction of about 12 mN/m）, thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53（52.7%）,Pseudomonas strain A6（38.2%） and Joostella strain A8（26.8%）. When growing in consortia,isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures（about 90%）, suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers（i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives） with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates.

Background:The prognosis of colorectal cancer depends on the number of positive lymph nodes(LNþ)and the total number of lymph nodes resected(rLN).This represents the lymph-node ratio(LNR).The aim of our study is to assess how the length of the resected specimen(RL)influences the prognostic values of the ***:We conducted a retrospective study of all the patients operated on for colorectal cancer from 2000 to 2015 at our *** details were *** total number of rLN,the number of LNþ,and the LNR were calculated and measured against the *** receiver-operating characteristic(ROC)curve of patients with LNþwas ***:Of the 670 patients included in our study,337 were men(50.3%)and the mean age was 69.2 *** correlation with prognosis of the LNR is greater than that of the LNR adjusted to RL(LNR/RL),both in subjects with positive nodes(n=312)and in all cases(n=670).The LNR presents a higher prognostic value than LNR/RL and RL in patients with LNþexcept for metastatic recurrence,for which the predictive value appears slightly higher for LNR/*** statistical significance of the maximal divergence in Kaplan–Meier survival plots was demonstrated for the LNR(P=0.043),not for LNR/RL(P=0.373)and RL alone(P=0.314).Conclusion:An increase in RL causes an increase in the number of harvested lymph nodes without affecting the number of LNþ,thus representing a confounding factor that could alter the prognostic value of the *** larger-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Objective:To evaluate in vitro effects of Tagetes minuta L. essential oil(TEO) on L3 Anisakis larvae type 1. Methods:In order to evaluate the potential use of Tagetes minuta essential oil against L3 Anisakis larvae three different media were tested:1) a saline solution(SS); 2) an industrial marinating solution; 3) sunflower seeds oil(SO). For each media and concentrations of TEO(0.1%,0.5%,1.0% and 5.0% v/v),20 parasites were introduced into plastic Petri dishes(diameter 90 mm) and maintained at room temperature. As controls,larvae were maintained without TEO under identical experimental conditions in SS,MS and SO. A total of 900 larvae were tested. The normalized mean viability,LT100,LT50 and the percentage of inactivation at 24 hours were calculated. Results:In vitro tests revealed a complete inactivation of parasites in saline solution after 2 hours with 5% and 1% of TEO. In marinating solution,a complete inactivation of parasites was observed after 4 hours at all concentrations used. A slower activity for all TEO concentration was reported in SO. Conclusions:The results obtained,showing a strong activity against Anisakis larvae,confirm TEO as a larvicidal agent in the treatment of human anisakidosis and in the industrial marinating process.

The majority of patients infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-COrona-Virus-2(SARS-CoV-2)either completely recover from symptoms in a few days or stay asymptomatic.[1−3]Nevertheless,a consistent proportion of subjects with a history of probable or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection refers persistency,new occurrence,relapse,or fluctuation of symptoms,and these manifestations are defined as post-COVID-19 condition.[4]Of note,the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 include several cardiac manifestations,including direct myocardial and pericardial injury/inflammation,as well as cardiomyopathies and arrythmias,sustained by viral infiltration and/or dysregulation of adaptive immune response.[5]Even though rare,acute myocarditis may be an important post-COVID-19 condition and may be associated with the occurrence of new-onset atrial fibrillation.

A synthetic metalloporphine was immobilized onto a PVA-based and mercapto-grafted solid support, emulating the active site of cytochrome P450. Its ligninolytic peroxidase-like catalytic activity was studied. The coordinated mercapto ligand significantly affected the catalytic features of the catalyst because the oxidation of lignin-model compounds was very slow by comparison with imidazoleand pyridine-coordinated immobilized metalloporphines. Conversely, the catalyst efficiently bleached several industrial dyes and thus demonstrated promising activity for this application. Based on this altered substrate specificity the oxygen-donor catalytic route seems to be more favorable than a single electron oxidation pathway.

Abdominal wall defects and incisional hernias represent a challenging problem. In particular, when a synthetic mesh is applied to contaminated wounds, its removal is required in 50%-90% of cases. Biosynthetic meshes are the newest tool available to surgeons and they could have a role in ventral hernia repair in a potential-ly contaminated field. We describe the use of a sheet of bovine pericardium graft in the reconstruction of abdominal wall defect in two patients. Bovine pericardium graft was placed in the retrorectus space and secured to the anterior abdominal wall using polypropylene sutures in a tension-free manner. We experienced no evidence of recurrence at 4 and 5 years follow-up.

The Tenth International Gastric Cancer Congress(IGCC) was held in Verona, Italy, from June 19 to 22, 2013. The meeting enclosed various aspects of stomach tumor management, including both tightly clinical approaches, and topics more related to basic research. Moreover, an overview on gastrointestinal stromal tumors was provided too, although here not discussed. Here we will discuss some topics related to molecular biology of gastric cancer(GC), inherent to prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic tools shown at the conference. Results about well known subjects, such as E-cadherin loss of expression/function, were presented. They revealed that other mutations of the gene were identified, showing a continuous research to improve diagnosis and prognosis of stomach tumor. Simultaneously, new possible molecular markers with an established role for other neoplasms, were discussed, such as mesothelin, stomatin-like protein 2 and Notch-1. Hence, a wide overview including both old and new diagnostic/prognostic tools was offered. Great attention was also dedicated to possible drugs to be used against GC. They included monoclonal antibodies, such as MS57-2.1, drugs used in other pathologies, such as maraviroc, and natural extracts from plants such as biflorin. We would like to contribute to summarize the most impressive studies presented at the IGCC, concerning novel findings about molecular biology of gastric cancer. Although further investigations will be necessary, it can be inferred that more and more tools were developed, so as to better face stomach neoplasms.
