Celiac disease, an immune-mediated enteropathy induced in genetically susceptible individuals by the ingestion of gluten, is the most frequent disorder associated with splenic hypofunction or atrophy. Defective splenic function affects more than one-third of adult patients with celiac disease, and it may predispose to a higher risk of infections by encapsulated bacteria and thromboembolic and autoimmune complications, particularly when celiac patients have concomitant pre-malignant and malignant complications (refractory celiac disease, ulcerative jejunoileitis and enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma). However, the clinical management of patients with celiac disease does not take into account the evaluation of splenic function, and in patients with high degree of hyposplenism or splenic atrophy the prophylactic immunization with specific vaccines against the polysaccharide antigens of encapsulated bacteria is not currently recommended. We critically re-evaluate clinical and diagnostic aspects of spleen dysfunction in celiac disease, and highlight new perspectives in the prophylactic management of infections in this condition.

We describe a case of a rare congenital heart disorder,scimitar syndrome,diagnosed in an adult woman presenting with dyspnea on exertion,chest pain and recurrent episodes of pulmonary *** hallmark of the syndrome is the presence of an enlarged anomalous pulmonary vein draining into the inferior vena *** tracking echocardiography,including the often-forgotten atrial strain evaluation,is a sensitive parameter that should be routinely used for a better clinical and prognostic evaluation of patients with congenital heart disease(CHD).

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a fundamental role in colorectal cancer(CRC)initiation and *** genome-wide data have confirmed that in CRC this pathway is one of the most frequently modified by genetic or epigenetic alterations affecting almost 90%of Wnt/β-catenin gene members.A major challenge is thus learning how the corrupted coordination of this pathway is tied to other signalings to enhance cell *** proliferator activated receptorγ(PPARγ)is emerging as a growth-limiting and differentiation-promoting *** tumorigenesis it exerts a tumor suppressor role and is potentially linked with the Wnt/β-catenin *** on these results,the identification of new selective PPARγmodulators with inhibitory effects on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway is becoming an interesting ***,in fact,these molecules display such properties,new research avenues would be opened aimed at developing new molecular targeted ***,we review the basic principles and present new hypotheses underlying the crosstalk between Wnt/β-catenin and PPARγ***,we discuss the advances in our understanding as to how their altered regulation can culminate in colon cancer and the efforts aimed at designing novel PPARγagonists endowed with Wnt/β-catenin inhibitory effects to be used as therapeutic and/or preventive agents.

Functional Characterization of Bifidobacteria of Human Origin: A Case Study by the Students of Food Science and Technology of the University of Foggia (Southern Italy)

The aim of this paper was to study the potential technological and probiotic properties of bifidobacteria isolated from human feces. Bifidobacteria, naturally present in the dominant colonic microbiota, represent up to 25% of the cultivable faecal bacteria in adults and 80% in infants. Bifidobacteria have been shown to adhere and colonize in high numbers different types of cultured intestinal epithelial cells;moreover some authors reported that some strains are able to stabilize the intestinal microbiota during and after antibiotic therapy, modulate the immune system, protecting against chemically induced intestinal inflammation and reducing symptoms of colitis. Eight isolates of bifidobacteria were studied to assess their technological and probiotic traits;the technological characterization relied on the assessment of enzymatic activities (proteolytic and lipolytic activity), growth under various conditions (pH, temperature and addition of salt), acidifying ability and metabolism (arginine deamination, esculin, esculin hydrolysis and citrate metabolism). The study of the probiotic characteristics focused on the evaluation of the survival at low pH and with bile salts added, antibiotic resistance, and hydrophobic properties. As a result of this process, two promising strains were selected for further studies.
