A 24-year-old female patient with parathyroid carcinoma,the rarest endocrine malignancy,had two *** the first pregnancy,she had severe nausea and *** and hyperparathyroidism were diagnosed in the postpartum *** gravidarum masked a diagnosis of *** ultrasound and Tc-99 m sestamibi found an enlarged lower right parathyroid *** gland was surgically removed,and an initial pathology report described atypical *** afterward,she became pregnant *** the second pregnancy,her calcium level was frequently controlled but was always in the normal *** is explained by the specific physiology of pregnancy accompanied by hemodilution,hypoalbuminemia and maternal hypercalciuria(mediated by increased glomerular filtration).During lactation,calcium levels rose,and a newneck ultrasound showed a solitary mass in the area of prior surgery and an enlarged pretracheal lymph *** needle aspiration of the solitary mass and node showed parathyroid carcinoma *** tumor mass was resected en bloc with the contiguous tissues and surrounding lymph nodes(pathology report; parathyroid carcinoma with metastases).Over the next five years,four consecutive surgeries were performed to remove malignant parathyroid tissue,lymph nodes and local *** the surgical procedures,no hypocalcemia was *** serious hypercalcemia recurred; the calcium level was difficult to control with a combination of pamidronate,cinacalcet and loop *** elements of multiple endocrine neoplasia were present.

BK nephropathy in the native kidneys of patients with organ transplants: Clinical spectrum of BK infection

Nephropathy secondary to BK virus, a member of the Papoviridae family of viruses, has been recognized for some time as an important cause of allograft dysfunction in renal transplant recipients. In recent times, BK nephropathy(BKN) of the native kidneys has being increasingly recognized as a cause of chronic kidney disease in patients with solid organ transplants, bone marrow transplants and in patients with other clinical entities associated with immunosuppression. In such patients renal dysfunction is often attributed to other factors including nephrotoxicity of medications used to prevent rejection of the transplanted organs. Renal biopsy is required for the diagnosis of BKN. Quantitation of the BK viral load in blood and urine are surrogate diagnostic methods. The treatment of BKN is based on reduction of the immunosuppressive medications. Several compounds have shown antiviral activity, but have not consistently shown to have beneficial effects in BKN. In addition to BKN, BK viral infection can cause severe urinary bladder cystitis, ureteritis and urinary tract obstruction as well as manifestations in other organ systems including the central nervous system, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system and the hematopoietic system. BK viral infection has also been implicated in tumorigenesis. The spectrum of clinical manifestations from BK infection and infection from other members of the Papoviridae family is widening. Prevention and treatment of BK infection and infections from other Papovaviruses are subjects of intense research.

BACKGROUND Oxidative damage of DNA and RNA has been associated with mortality of patients with different ***,there is no published data on the potential use of DNA and RNA oxidative damage to predict the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)undergoing liver transplantation(LT).AIm To determine whether patients with increased DNA and RNA oxidative damage prior to LT for HCC have a poor LT *** Patients with HCC who underwent LT were included in this observational and retrospective *** levels of all three oxidized guanine species(OGS)were measured prior to LT since guanine is the nucleobase that forms DNA and RNA most prone to *** mortality at 1 year was the end-point *** Surviving patients(n=101)showed lower serum OGS levels(P=0.01)and lower age of the liver donor(P=0.03)than non-surviving patients(n=13).An association between serum OGS levels prior to LT and 1-year LT(odds ratio=2.079;95%confidence interval=1.356-3.189;P=0.001)was found in the logistic regression *** The main new finding was that high serum OGS concentration prior to LT was associated with the mortality 1 year after LT in HCC patients.

运用古DNA技术对新疆石人子沟遗址的墓葬中出土的古代家马样本进行遗传学分析。共选取5匹家马骨骼样本,从中提取DNA并对线粒体DNA控制区和毛色控制基因的核DNA进行PCR扩增。全部样本获得了线粒体DNA序列,在这5个序列中共检测出3个不同的单倍型,可以归属到3个不同的谱系A,B和E。毛色控制基因的SNP检测结果显示石人子沟遗址古代家马有栗色(chestnut)、枣色(bay)和金黄色(palomino)3种不同毛色。尽管样本量很小,但是线粒体DNA和毛色控制基因的核DNA研究均显示出石人子沟遗址的古代家马具有较高的遗传多样性。结合古代文献记载和新疆的特殊地理位置,支持新疆是家马引入中国的一个重要通道的观点。此外,金黄色马与墓主人同葬于墓室,可能是当时特殊的选择,表明马在古代人类社会中具有着重要的地位。

Endophytic fungi were identified from different parts of the medicinal parasitic mistletoe Cladocolea micrantha and from its host Anacardium occidentale, suggesting a strict host-parasite relationship. Eight fungal endophytes were isolated and morphologically characterized. The ascomycete Guignardia mangiferae and strains of mycelia sterilia were prevalent in the isolations. The unequivocal identification of Guignardia mangiferae at a probabilistic degree close to 100% was carried out by DNA extraction followed by PCR analyses of the ITS-1 and ITS-2 regions and comparison of the genetic sequence with the NCBI database.

Fern extracts potentiate fluconazole activity and inhibit morphological changes in Candida species

Objective: To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species Lygodium venustum(L. venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos(P. calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis ***: The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity, as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration(mIC), minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also ***: The extract obtained from L. venustum presented a mIC > 8 192 mg/m L, while the extract obtained from and P. calomelanos presented a mIC = 8 192 mg/m L, indicating that they present weak antifungal activity. However, combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug. At different experimental conditions, such as concentration of the extract and type of strain, the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation, indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the ***: The extracts obtained from the fern species L. venustum and P. calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity. However, P. calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species, indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology. Therefore, novel studies are required to characterize the interference of these extracts in the virulence and pathogenicity of Candida species as well as the potential of fern species to treat fungal infections.

Antifungal activity of total and fractionated phenolic extracts from two wild edible herbs

The chemical characterization of phenolic extracts of salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor Scop. s.l.) and broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forsk.) was performed. Active fractions were separated and characterized and, in the case of O. crenata, two phenolic compounds, verbascoside and is overbascoside, were quantitatively extracted, purified and characterized. These compounds proved to be effective in reducing the growth of some important fungi responsible for the decay of fresh fruit and vegetables in postharvest. Verbascoside showed significant activity against Penicillium italicum, fairly inhibited monilinia laxa, P. expansum, and Aspergillus carbonarius, and showed little activity against Botrytis cinerea, m. fructicola and P. digitatum. Isoverbascoside completely inhibited B. cinerea, P. digitatum, P. italicum, and P. expansum;it fairly inhibited m. laxa and A. carbonarius;while it showed to be less effective against m. fructicola. The obtained results support the possible use of some wild edible plants as a source of phenolic substances for the postharvest biological control of fresh fruit and vegetable rots.

Automated Telephone Calls in the Follow-Up of Self-Care in Outpatients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Feasibility Study

Aims and objectives: To test an automated telephone service as a follow-up and support strategy for self-care in a population of adult mexican patients with type 2 diabetes. methods: The design was a two-group comparative design, with pre and post-intervention measurements. Patients were assigned into intervention (n = 31), or comparison (n = 33) groups. Over 12 weeks, each participant in the intervention group received automated phone calls with instructions to facilitate accomplishment of the treatment, and self-care activities. Two focus groups helped to appreciate patients’ follow-up experience. Randomized grouping was performed by selecting numbers from an urn;the final sample comprised 31 (48%) patients in the intervention group, and 33 (52%) in the comparison group;these procedures were performed by the case nurse management. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon and the University of michigan;all of the participants signed informed consent. Results: Of the 372 programmed phone calls made to the participants, 234 were completed, representing a 62.9% response rate. Phone calls may be associated to a 0.82% decrease in the HbA1c values and to lower depression scores. HbA1c measurements decreased 0.82% (m = 7.41 - 6.69;t = 25;4.11;p = ?0.001) from the baseline values over the 12-week study in the intervention group and 0.49% (m = 7.24 - 6.75;t = 26;2.11;p = 0.044) in the comparison group. Variables related to medication intake did not exhibit differences between the baseline and second measurements, except with respect to the scale of depression.
