Knowledge of the rheological behavior of saturated particulate networks is crucial for every process in which a particulate network is built-up,dewatered,or transported,as in a decanter ***,difficulties arise as to how to characterize the material *** far,no standardized method or measurement device has *** this work,the requirements for a useful device are discussed,followed by the design of a modified shear cell for a Schulze ring shear tester *** and its measurement *** experiments under normal load with different sediments consisting of inorganic and organic particles whose material properties strongly affect the rheological behavior were *** results demonstrate the potential of the modified shear ***,current challenges in characterization are *** characterization possibilities of the developed shear cell are a further step toward understanding the theological behavior of liquid-saturated particulate networks.

Tree stand falls: A persistent cause of neurological injury in hunting

AIM: To characterize and compare our current series of patients to prior reports in order to identify any changes in the incidence of neurological injury related to hunting accidents in Rochester, New ***: All tree stand-related injuries referred to our regional trauma center from September 2003 through November 2011 were reviewed. Information was obtained from the hospital's trauma registry and medical records were retrospectively reviewed for data pertaining to the ***: Fifty-four patients were identified. Ninetysix percent of patients were male with a mean age of 47.9 years(range 15-69). The mean Injury Severity Score was 12.53 ± 1.17(range 2-34). The average height of fall was 18.2 feet(range 4-40 feet). All patients fell to the ground with the exception of one who landed on rocks, and many hit the tree or branches on the way down. A reason for the fall was documented in only 13 patients, and included tree stand construction(3), loss of balance(3), falling asleep(3), structural failure(2), safety harness breakage(3) or lightheadedness(1). The most common injuries were spinal fractures(54%), most commonly in the cervical spine(69%), followed by the thoracic(38%) and lumbar(21%) spine. Eight patients required operative repair. Head injuries occurred in 22%. Other systemic injuries include rib/clavicular fractures(47%), pelvic fractures(11%), solid organ injury(23%), and pneumothorax or hemothorax(19%). No patient deaths were reported. The average hospital length of stay was 6.56 ± 1.07 d. Most patients were discharged home without(72%) or with(11%) services and 17% required rehabilitation. CONClUSION: Falls from hunting tree stands are still common, with a high rate of neurological injury. Compared to a decade ago we have made no progress in preventing these neurological injuries, despite an increase in safety advances. Enabling innovation and access to health technologies remains a key strategy in combating infectious diseases in low-and middle-income countries(lMICs).However,a gulf between paying markets and the endemicity of such diseases has contributed to the dearth of R&d in meeting these public health *** the pharmaceutical industry views emerging economies as potential new markets,most of the world’s poorest bottom billion now reside in middle-income countries-a fact that has complicated tiered access ***,product development partnerships-particularly those involving academic institutions and small firms-find commercial opportunities in pursuing even neglected diseases;and a growing pharmaceutical sector in BRICS countries offers hope for an indigenous base of *** innovation will be shaped by 1)access to building blocks of knowledge;2)strategic use of intellectual property and innovative financing to meet public health goals;3)collaborative norms of open innovation;and 4)alternative business models,some with a double bottom *** such resource constraints,lMICs are poised to develop a new,more resource-effective model of innovation that holds exciting promise in meeting the needs of global health.

Pluripotent cellular models have shown great promise in the study of a number of neurological disorders. Several advantages of using a stem cell model include the potential for cells to derive disease relevant neuronal cell types, providing a system for researchers to monitor disease progression during neurogenesis, along with serving as a platform for drug discovery. A number of stem cell derived models have been employed to establish in ~,itro research models of Huntington＇s disease that can be used to investigate cellular pathology and screen lk^r drug and cell-based therapies. Although some progress has been made, there are a number of challenges and limitations that must be overcome before the true potential of this research strategy is achieved. In this article we review current stem cell models that have been reported, as well as discuss the issues that impair these studies. We also highlight the prospective application of Huntington＇s disease stem cell models in the development of novel therapeutic strategies and advancement of personalized medicine.

Variable retention harvesting(VRH)systems have gained wide use in many different forest types across the globe,but largely have been implemented in forests characterized by severe,infrequent disturbance *** has been less attention given to developing VRH approaches in forests that are characterized as having a mixed-severity disturbance regime that often results in only partial mortality of canopy trees in spatially heterogeneous *** example of such a forest type is red pine(Pinus resinosa Ait.)-dominated ecosystem of the western Great lakes region of North *** purpose of this review is to provide a conceptual foundation for developing VRH approaches in red pine ecosystems that are based on a mixed-severity disturbance *** contention is that red pine forests managed following a natural model are more resilient to disturbances and external threats such as climate *** the red pine ecosystem,VRH application should reflect the often severe,but partial canopy removal from natural disturbance that is characteristic of this ecosystem and that results in more than trivial numbers of surviving overstory trees across a range of spatial configurations in regenerating *** live trees should span a range of diameters,but favor the larger end of the diameter distribution,as this reflects the likely pattern of survival after natural disturbance and is often a key structural element lacking from managed *** should be applied in ways that vary the spatial pattern of legacy trees in and among stands,but largely in ways that reflect the pattern of spatially patchy canopy structure,with large openings surrounded by a less disturbed matrix,as occurs with a natural disturbance *** trees and deadwood structures should reflect the composition of the pre-disturbance forest,including species in addition to dominant red ***,retained structures should be viewed as dynamic entities that grow,die,and decay and that need

In 1919,Pio del Rio-Hortega first described a class of cells residing in the brain with a tiny soma and branched architecture distinguishable from astrocytes and *** cells,called microglia or mesoglia,have come to be appreciated as resident immune cells in the central nervous system(CNS).In the year 2019,we review the three most recent advances in microglia research in this 100th year since their discovery(Fig.1).We first discuss their transcriptional diversity,which allows us to appreciate the heterogeneity of microglia across species,development,diseases,and brain *** also highlight recent stem cell-based approaches that allow us to study human microglia.

Esophageal cancer is increasing in incidence more than any other visceral malignancy in North America. Adenocarcinoma has become the most common cell type. Surgery remains the primary treatment modality for locoregional disease. Overall survival with surgery alone has been dismal, with metastatic disease the primary mode of treatment failure after an R0 surgical resection. Cure rates with chemotherapy or radiation therapy alone have been disappointing as well. For these reasons, over the last decade multi-modality treatment has gained increasing acceptance as the standard of care. This review examines the present data and role of neoadjuvant treatment using chemotherapy and radiation therapy followed by surgery for the treatment of esophageal cancer.
