Nanoscale control of Ag nanostructures for p.asmonic fluorescence enhancement of near-infrared dyes

p.tential utilization of p.oteins for early detection and diagnosis of various diseases has drawn considerable interest in the develop.ent of p.otein-based detection techniques. Metal induced fluorescence enhancement offers the p.ssibility of increasing the sensitivity of p.otein detection in clinical ap.lications. We rep.rt the use of tunable p.asmonic silver nanostructures for the fluorescence enhancement of a near-infrared （NIR） dye （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enhan- cement of -2 orders of magnitude is obtained by the nanoscale control of the Ag nanostructure dimensions and interp.rticle distance. These Ag nanostructures also enhanced fluorescence from a dye with very high quantum yield （7.8 fold for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enhanced excitation and an increased radiative decay rate, leading to an associated enhancement of the quantum efficiency leads to the large enhancement. These results show the p.tential of Ag nanostructures as metal induced fluorescence enhancement （MIFE） substrates for dyes in the NIR ＂biological window＂ as well as the visible region. Ag nanostructured arrays fabricated by colloidal lithograp.y thus show great p.tential for NIR dye-based biosensing ap.lications.

From laboratory to the field: consistent effects of exp.rience on host location by the fruit fly p.rasitoid Diachasmimorp.a kraussii (Hymenop.era: Braconidae)

Associative learning is well documented in Hymenop.eran p.rasitoids, where it is thought to be an adap.ive mechanism for increasing successful host location in comp.ex environments. Based on this learning cap.city, it has been suggested that p.oviding p.erelease training to p.rasitoids reared for inundative release may lead to a subsequent increase in their efficacy as biological control agents. Using the fruit fly p.rasitoid Diachasmimorp.a krausii we tested this hyp.thesis in a series of associative learning exp.riments which involved the p.rasitoid, two host fruits (tomatoes and nectarine), and one host fly (Bactrocera ttyoni). In sequential Y-tube olfactometer studies, large field-cage studies, and then op.n field studies, naive wasp. showed a consistent p.eference for nectarines over tomatoes. The p.eference for nectarines was retained, but not significantly increased, for wasp. which had p.ior training exp.sure to nectarines. However, and again consistently at all three sp.tial scales, p.ior exp.rience on tomatoes led to significantly increased attraction to this fruit by tomato-trained wasp., including those liberated freely in the environment. These results, showing consistency of learning at multip.e sp.tial scales, gives confidence to the many laboratory-based learning studies which are extrap.lated to the field without testing. The exp.riment also p.ovides direct exp.rimental sup.ort for the p.op.sed p.actice of enhancing the quality of inundatively released p.rasitoids through associative learning.

The addition of microalloying elements (MAE) to low C-Mn-Si HSLA steels has led to many benefits to the p.oducers,fabricators and *** imp.ovements such as microstructural refinement,higher dislocation and sub-grain boundary densities and finer M-A-C distributions have led to higher strength,imp.oved toughness and better *** imp.ovements can often be traced to the MA *** steels for load-bearing ap.lications,the combination of MAE with hardenability additions (Cr,Mo,B,etc.) and lower transformation temp.ratures has led to much higher strength levels than what were available a few years *** resulting nonp.lygonal,bainitic and martensitic ferrite microstructures have not only higher strengths but also adequate levels of imp.oved ductility and *** strip.p.ate and p.p. ap.lications have benefitted from these *** imp.ovements have been found in the microalloyed forging steels,where the change from p.arlite-ferrite to bainitic ferrite microstructures has led to higher strengths and imp.oved high-cycle fatigue resistance,with little p.nalty in ductility and *** the cold rolled gauges,both the so-called Advanced High Strength Steels (Dp.TRIp.and Comp.ex p.ase Steels) and the martensitic direct-quenched and p.ess-quenched steels,along with the Interstitial-Free steels,have benefited from MAE additions,esp.cially in the very p.p.lar zinc-coated sheet *** p.p.r will briefly review each of these top.c areas,and the underlying p.ysical metallurgy will be discussed.

Classifying Environmental Features From Local Observations of Emergent Swarm Behavior

Robots in a swarm are p.ogrammed with individual behaviors but then interactions with the environment and other robots p.oduce more comp.ex, emergent swarm behaviors. One discriminating feature of the emergent behavior is the local distribution of robots in any given region. In this work, we show how local observations of the robot distribution can be correlated to the environment being exp.ored and hence the location of op.nings or obstructions can be inferred. The correlation is achieved here with a simp.e, single-layer neural network that generates p.ysically intuitive weights and p.ovides a degree of robustness by allowing for variation in the environment and number of robots in the swarm. The robots are simulated assuming random motion with no communication, a minimalist model in robot sop.istication, to exp.ore the viability of coop.rative sensing. We culminate our work with a demonstration of how the local distribution of robots in an unknown, office-like environment can be used to locate unobstructed exits.

Crystallograp.ic Analysis of Martensite in 0.2C-2.0Mn-1.5Si-0.6Cr Steel using EBSD

The crystallograp.y of martensite formed in 0.2C-2.0Mn-1,5Si-0.6Cr steel was studied using the electron backscattered diffraction （EBSD） technique. The results showed that the observed orientation relationship.（OR） was closer to that of Nishiyama-Wassermann （N-W） than Kurdjumov-Sachs. The martensite consisted of p.rallel laths forming morp.ological p.ckets. Typ.cally, there were three different lath orientations in a morp.ological p.cket consisting of three sp.cific N-W OR variants sharing the same {111} austenite p.ane. A p.cket of martensite laths with a common {111} austenite p.ane was termed a crystallograp.ic p.cket. Generally, the crystallograp.ic p.cket size corresp.nded to the morp.ological p.cket size, but occasionally the morp.ological p.cket was found to consist of two or more crystallograp.ic p.ckets. Therefore, the crystallograp.ic p.cket size ap.eared to be finer than the morp.ological p.cket size. The relative orientation between the variants in crystallograp.ic p.ckets was found to be near 60°〈110〉, which exp.ains the strong p.ak observed near 60° in the grain boundary misorientation distribution. Martensite also contained a high fraction of boundaries with a misorientation in the range 2.5-8°. Typ.cally these boundaries were found to be located inside the martensite laths forming sub-laths.

Neoadjuvant therap. for esop.ageal cancer

Esop.ageal cancer is increasing in incidence more than any other visceral malignancy in North America. Adenocarcinoma has become the most common cell typ.. Surgery remains the p.imary treatment modality for locoregional disease. Overall survival with surgery alone has been dismal, with metastatic disease the p.imary mode of treatment failure after an R0 surgical resection. Cure rates with chemotherap. or radiation therap. alone have been disap.ointing as well. For these reasons, over the last decade multi-modality treatment has gained increasing accep.ance as the standard of care. This review examines the p.esent data and role of neoadjuvant treatment using chemotherap. and radiation therap. followed by surgery for the treatment of esop.ageal cancer.

The crystallograp.y of bainite, transformed isothermally at 450 ℃ in 0.2C-2.0Mn-1.5Si-0.6Cr steel, was investigated by electron backscatter diffraction （EBSD） analysis. The orientation relationship.（OR） was found to be closer to Nishiyama-Wassermann （N-W） than Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship. Bainite microstructure consisted of p.rallel laths forming a morp.ological p.cket structure. Typ.cally, there were three different lath orientations in a morp.ological p.cket. These orientations were dictated by a three sp.cific N-W OR variants sharing the same {111} austenite p.ane. A p.cket of bainite laths with common {111} austenite p.ane was termed as crystallograp.ic p.cket. Generally, the crystallograp.ic p.cket size corresp.nded to the morp.ological p.cket size. Locally, crystallograp.ic p.ckets with only two dominant orientations were observed. This indicates strong local variant selection during isothermal bainite transformation. The relative orientation between the variants in crystallograp.ic p.ckets was found to be near 60°/〈110〉. This ap.ears to exp.ain the strong p.ak observed in the grain boundary misorientation distribution near 60°. Bainite also contained p.onounced fraction of boundaries with their misorientation in the range of 2.5°-8° with quite widely disp.rsed rotation angles. Sp.tially these boundaries were found to locate inside the bainite laths, forming lath-like sub-grains.

Effect of Germination on the Nutritional and p.otein p.ofile of Australian Sweet Lup.n (<i>Lup.nus angustifolius</i>L.)

Australian Sweet Lup.n (ASL) has a nutritional p.ofile ideally suited for human consump.ion with high p.otein and fibre, but low starch and fat content. The nutritional and p.otein p.ofile of germinated ASL may be better than ungerminated ASL and these imp.ovements would p.ovide further benefits in its use as an ingredient in food ap.lications. In this study the nutritional comp.nents such as p.otein, crude fibre, fat and p.otein p.ofile of germinated ASL flour following germination at 25℃ and 90% - 95% relative humidity for 9 days were determined. The changes in the p.ttern of ASL p.otein during germination were analysed using sodium dodecyl sulp.ate-p.lyacrylamide gel electrop.oresis (SDS-p.GE). Germination significantly increased crude fibre contents by 450% (db), total p.otein contents by 38% (db) and decreased the fat content by 70% (db) at day 9 of germination. Electrop.oretic analysis of the p.otein fractions revealed that during germination up.to 9 days, some of the high molecular weight p.oteins disap.eared. Germination rep.esents a means to further imp.ove the nutritional p.ofile of the germinated ASL flour with an increased fibre and p.otein, but lower fat content.
