Variant selection in laser powder bed fusion of non-spherical Ti-6Al-4V powder

The presence ofα/αon priorβ/βgrain boundaries directly impacts the final mechanical properties of the titanium ***β/βgrain boundary variant selection of titanium alloys has been assumed to be unlikely owing to the high cooling rates in laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF).However,we hypothesize that powder characteristics such as morphology(non-spherical)and particle size(50–120μm)could affect the initial variant selection in L-PBF processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy by locally altering the cooling *** the high cooling rate found in L-PBF,results showed the presence ofβ/βgrain boundaryαlath growth inside two adjacent priorβ*** backscatter diffraction micrographs confirmed the presence ofβ/βgrain boundary variant selection,and synchrotron X-ray high-speed imaging observation revealed the role of the“shadowing effect”on the locally decreased cooling rate because of keyhole depth reduction and the consequentβ/βgrain boundaryαlath *** self-accommodation mechanism was the main variant selection driving force,and the most abundantα/αboundary variant was type 4(63.26°//[10553¯]).The dominance of Category IIαlath clusters associated with the type 4α/αboundary variant was validated using the phenomenological theory of martensite transformations and analytical calculations,from which the stress needed for theβ→αtransformation was calculated.

A canonical correlation analysis is a generic parametric model used in the statistical analysis of data involving interrelated or interdependent input and output *** is especially useful in data analytics as a dimensional reduction strategy that simplifies a complex,multidimensional parameter space by identifying a relatively few combinations of variables that are maximally *** shortcoming of the canonical correlation analysis,however,is that it provides only a linear combination of variables that maximizes these *** this in mind,we describe here a versatile,Monte-Carlo based methodology that is useful in identifying non-linear functions of the variables that lead to strong input/output *** demonstrate that our approach leads to a substantial enhancement of correlations,as illustrated by two experimental applications of substantial interest to the materials science community,namely:(1)determining the interdependence of processing and microstructural variables associated with doped polycrystalline aluminas,and(2)relating microstructural decriptors to the electrical and optoelectronic properties of thin-film solar cells based on CuInSe_(2) ***,we describe how this approach facilitates experimental planning and process control.

A Comprehensive Comparison of the Analytical and Numerical Prediction of the Thermal History and Solidification Microstructure of Inconel 718 Products Made by Laser Powder-Bed Fusion

The finite-element （FE） model and the Rosenthal equation are used to study the thermal and microstructural phenomena in the laser powder-bed fusion of lnconel 718. A primary aim is to comprehend the advantages and disadvantages of the Rosenthal equation （which provides an analytical alternative to FE analysis）, and to investigate the influence of underlying assumptions on estimated results. Various physical characteristics are compared among the FE model, Rosenthal equation, and experiments. The predicted melt pool shapes compared with reported experimental results from the literature show that both the FE model and the analytical （Rosenthal） equation provide a reasonably accurate estimation. At high heat input, under conditions leading to keyholing, the reported melt width is narrower than predicted by the analytical equation. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis based on choices of the absorptivity is performed, which shows that the Rosenthal approach is more sensitive to absorptivity, compared with the FE approach. The primary reason could be the effect of radiative and convective losses, which are assumed to be negligible in the Rosenthal equation. In addition, both methods predict a columnar solidification microstructure, which agrees well with experimental reports, and the primary dendrite arm spacing （PdAS） predicted with the two approaches is comparable with measurements.

Enabling innovation and access to health technologies remains a key strategy in combating infectious diseases in low-and middle-income countries(LMICs).However,a gulf between paying markets and the endemicity of such diseases has contributed to the dearth of R&d in meeting these public health *** the pharmaceutical industry views emerging economies as potential new markets,most of the world’s poorest bottom billion now reside in middle-income countries-a fact that has complicated tiered access ***,product development partnerships-particularly those involving academic institutions and small firms-find commercial opportunities in pursuing even neglected diseases;and a growing pharmaceutical sector in BRICS countries offers hope for an indigenous base of *** innovation will be shaped by 1)access to building blocks of knowledge;2)strategic use of intellectual property and innovative financing to meet public health goals;3)collaborative norms of open innovation;and 4)alternative business models,some with a double bottom *** such resource constraints,LMICs are poised to develop a new,more resource-effective model of innovation that holds exciting promise in meeting the needs of global health.

Variable retention harvesting in Great Lakes mixed-pine forests: emulating a natural model in managed ecosystems

Variable retention harvesting(VRH)systems have gained wide use in many different forest types across the globe,but largely have been implemented in forests characterized by severe,infrequent disturbance *** has been less attention given to developing VRH approaches in forests that are characterized as having a mixed-severity disturbance regime that often results in only partial mortality of canopy trees in spatially heterogeneous *** example of such a forest type is red pine(Pinus resinosa Ait.)-dominated ecosystem of the western Great Lakes region of North *** purpose of this review is to provide a conceptual foundation for developing VRH approaches in red pine ecosystems that are based on a mixed-severity disturbance *** contention is that red pine forests managed following a natural model are more resilient to disturbances and external threats such as climate *** the red pine ecosystem,VRH application should reflect the often severe,but partial canopy removal from natural disturbance that is characteristic of this ecosystem and that results in more than trivial numbers of surviving overstory trees across a range of spatial configurations in regenerating *** live trees should span a range of diameters,but favor the larger end of the diameter distribution,as this reflects the likely pattern of survival after natural disturbance and is often a key structural element lacking from managed *** should be applied in ways that vary the spatial pattern of legacy trees in and among stands,but largely in ways that reflect the pattern of spatially patchy canopy structure,with large openings surrounded by a less disturbed matrix,as occurs with a natural disturbance *** trees and deadwood structures should reflect the composition of the pre-disturbance forest,including species in addition to dominant red ***,retained structures should be viewed as dynamic entities that grow,die,and decay and that need

In 1919,Pio del Rio-Hortega first described a class of cells residing in the brain with a tiny soma and branched architecture distinguishable from astrocytes and *** cells,called microglia or mesoglia,have come to be appreciated as resident immune cells in the central nervous system(CNS).In the year 2019,we review the three most recent advances in microglia research in this 100th year since their discovery(Fig.1).We first discuss their transcriptional diversity,which allows us to appreciate the heterogeneity of microglia across species,development,diseases,and brain *** also highlight recent stem cell-based approaches that allow us to study human microglia.

Neoadjuvant therapy for esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is increasing in incidence more than any other visceral malignancy in North America. Adenocarcinoma has become the most common cell type. Surgery remains the primary treatment modality for locoregional disease. Overall survival with surgery alone has been dismal, with metastatic disease the primary mode of treatment failure after an R0 surgical resection. Cure rates with chemotherapy or radiation therapy alone have been disappointing as well. For these reasons, over the last decade multi-modality treatment has gained increasing acceptance as the standard of care. This review examines the present data and role of neoadjuvant treatment using chemotherapy and radiation therapy followed by surgery for the treatment of esophageal cancer.
