Globally, there are an estimated 605 million people aged 60 years and above. Improvements in health care facilities have brought longevity, which is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century. Objectives: To assess the morbidity pattern in geriatric people. Methodology: A community based cross sectional study. Results: Out of 208 aged 91 (43.7%) were males, 117 (56.25%) were females. Maximum number of males and females were from the age group 60 - 64 years. 117 (56.25%) had chronic problems and 15 (7.2%) acute. Musculo skeleton problem was the commonest (63%) complaint both in males and females, followed by cardio vascular problem (44%). Diabetes mellitus was more common in males than females and hypertension was more common in females than males. Chronic bronchitis was the commonest respiratory disorder in males (8.7%). Total 20 (9.6%) had psychological problems (depression), psychological problems more common in males 11 (12%) than females 9 (7.7%) Conclusion: The present study showed that chronic morbidity in elderly was significantly higher (56.3%) than acute (7.2%), most commonly affected system by chronic morbidity was musculo-skeletal followed by cardio vascular (CVS) and gastrointestinal (GIT). Psychological problems were more common in males (12%) than in females (7.7%). Psychological problems were more in lower socio-economic class-(V) than higher Class [1].

Anatomical renal anomalies are one of the most commonly occurring renal anomalies. Most of these anomalies require series of investigations for the proper diagnosis. We tried to compare the results of conventional radiological investigations with magnetic resonance urography in the diagnosis of complex renal anomalies. Materials and methods: This was a prospective study done over a period of five years from 2006 to 2011. All the patients with suspected or diagnosed presence of renal anomalies were investigated by ultrasound (USG), Intravenous urography (IVU), micturating cystourethrogram (MCU), magnetic resonance urography (MRU), retrograde urethrography, cystogenitoscopy, renal scans as per the indication in the case. Results: Total sixty three patients were studied over the period. The most common complex renal anomaly diagnosed was duplex system and conventional radiological investigations were useful in the diagnosis of less than 50% patients. Female patients outnumbered male patients in having complex renal anomalies. MRU was diagnostic in most of the patients with such anomalies and excellent mode of investigation for functional and anatomical details. Conclusion: MRU is better than conventional radiological investigations in the diagnosis of complex renal anomalies.

A major part of world is facing water shortages today. While the world’s population has grown to more than 7.75 billion, the quantity of sweet water has remained the same. The ever increasing use of water by such a large population has resulted in pollution of many water sources. The developing world where a large fraction of total world population is located faces water scarcity in a more severe manner than the developed world. The developed world has managed to control human population and preserve natural water resources more effectively. As a result of this and also due to stabilized population, they face lesser problems for water availability. Indian population stands at 1.386 billion as nowadays. The erratic monsoon rains over last few years have resulted in floods and subsequent water shortages in summer months in major part of the country. A similar situation is faced by many Asian and African countries. The means of recycling and using every possible source of water are always welcome in these countries. Since many of these countries lie in tropical or semitropical zone, the average relative humidity is more than 50% for most of the year. Changing life styles in these countries and spread of information technology based sectors have resulted in a growth spurt in air conditioning facilities. An air conditioner draws heat from surrounding air and cools the premises to desired temperature. During this process, a large amount of moisture in the atmosphere gets condensed and is drained out. There are no efforts made to recover this water in India and neighbouring countries. We have undertaken studies to check the quality of this water and see the feasibility of its use in a decentralized but effective manner. The results show that this water condensate from air conditioners is highly pure, substantial and available almost round the year. Chest wall hamartoma is a very rare tumour with benign course and distinct clinical, radiological, and histopathological characteristics. The lesion develops during foetal life and is present at or shortly after birth. It should be kept in differential diagnosis of complex chest wall masses diagnosed during antenatal ultrasound. CT thorax is useful for appreciation of detailed anatomy, characterization of the congenital abnormality and for surgical planning. Histopathology is used for the confirmation. Accurate diagnosis of mesenchymal hamartoma is important since many chest wall masses in children are malignant. We report a rare case of multifocal chest wall hamartoma in an infant who presented with multiple bilateral complex chest wall masses in which characteristic radiological and histopathological features led to the diagnosis of hamartoma, which was successfully treated with surgery.

Background Abnormal growth of cell called as cancer or *** it may be seen in any age,more commonly seen in patients more than 50 years of *** epithelial ovarian cancer has been commonly seen[1].Approximately 70%of ovarian cancers have been diagnosed at progressive stage where only 30%of women suffering from this cancer,expect to survive up to 5 *** malignancy constitutes about 15-20 percent of genital *** India the incidence of ovarian carcinoma(age adjustable to range from 1.7 to 15.2 from 2012 to 2014)in various population-based registers of *** 59,276 have been estimated as new ovarian cancer causes by the end of 2020 and twenty percent of neoplasms are *** is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in women exceeded only by breast,colon and lung ***,the recurrent ovarian cancer is a fatal disease with few *** the fact that most patients have uniform surgery and chemotherapy,the status of recurring disease *** location of recurrence and the periods between recurrences are likewise widely *** recurrence,approximately 70%of advanced stage ovarian cancer patients relapse,and even in stage I or II patients,the relapse rate is 20%-25%.Because the survival curve following recurrence never plateaus,the goal of treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer is to control the disease and its symptoms,limit treatment-related damage,and preserve or improve quality of life[2].There seems to be no doubt that Ayurveda,with its holistic approach,is the finest way to limit the adverse treatment outcomes while also enhancing the patient’s quality of life.

Although Himalayan glaciers are of particular interest in terms of future water supplies, regional climate changes, andsea-level rises, little is known about them due to lack of reliable and consistent data. There is a need for monitoring theseglaciers to bridge this knowledge gap and to provide field measurements necessary to calibrate and validate the resultsfrom different remote sensing operations. Therefore, glaciological observations have been carried out by the CryosphereMonitoring Project （CMP） since September 2011 on Rikha Samba Glacier in Hidden valley, Mustang district in westernNepal in order to study its annual mass balance. This paper presents the first results of that study. There are 10 glaciers inHidden Valley, named G1, G2, G3, up to G10. Of these, G5 is the Rikha Samba Glacier, which has the largest area （5.37km2） in this valley and the highest and lowest altitudes （6,476 and 5,392 m a.s.l., respectively）. The glacier mass balancediscussed in this paper was calculated using the glaciological method and the equilibrium line altitude （ELA）. The glaciershowed a negative annual point mass balance along the longitudinal profile of its lower part from September 10, 2011 toOctober 3, 2012. Stake measurements from October 4, 2012 to September 30, 2013 indicated a negative areal average ofannual mass balance ？0.088±0.019 m w.e. for the whole glacier. Based on these observations, the ELA of the Rikha SambaGlacier is estimated at 5,800 m a.s.l. in 2013. This negative balance may be due to rising air temperatures in the region,which have been incrementally rising since 1980 accompanied by little or no significant increase in precipitation in thatperiod. The negative mass balance confirms the general shrinking trend of the glacier.

Pharmacognostic Evaluation and Antioxidant Activity of <i>Urtica dioica</i>L.

Background: Urtica dioica L. is a common Himalayan species which produces allergenic substances causing oedema and inflammation in humans. It has become a source of folk medicine for the treatment of many diseases. The leaves and roots both are used internally as a blood purifier and diuretic and an infusion of the plant is used for nasal and menstrual haemorrhage, diabetes, rheumatism, eczema, anaemia, hair loss, as an expectorant and antidiarrhoeal. Present study includes pharmacognostic evaluation, antioxidant activity and HPTLC analysis of Urtica dioica L. Methods: Pharmacognostic evaluation of aerial part of U. dioica has been performed as per Indian pharmacopoeia. In-vitro antioxidant evaluation of U. dioica has been performed using DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Ferulic acid, a potential phenolic antioxidant present in this species, has been studied through HPTLC. Results: U. dioica hydro-alcoholic extract shows positive results for antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 88.33 ± 2.88 μg/ml. Standard ascorbic acid showed IC50 value of 2.8 ± 0.62 μg/ml. Ferulic acid was identified at Rf 0.61 ± 0.01 and quantified to 0.73% in this species through CAMAG HPTLC analysis. Conclusion: The pharmacognostical parameters reported can be considered as quality standards of U. dioica in herbal industry. Hydro-alcoholic extract of U. dioica showed positive in vitro antioxidant activity. Presence of phenolic compound suggests that antioxidant activity may be due to ferulic acid content.

Studies on Photo Degradation of Indigo Carmine Dye by Mechanochemically Synthesized Nano Zinc Selenite

In the present paper a novel mechanochemical synthesis method was introduced for the synthesis of zinc selenite. The product was obtained at 320 °C by mechanochemical method for a period of 20 h. The structural and micro structural properties of ZnSeO3 material was characterized by various analytical techniques like FT-IR, UV-DRS, XRD and SEM. The aim of the present work is to see the application of nanocrystalline material ZnSeO3 for photodegradation of indigo carmine dye with respect to various dye concentrations and amount of catalyst. The XRD analysis confirms orthorhombic structure of ZnSeO3 and the average particle size was found to be below 10 nm. Futher, the effect of pH and dye concentration on photodegradation was studied. The photodegradation reaction was monitored on the UV-visible double beam spectrophotometer. ZnSeO3 treatment exhibited 93% degradation of indigo carmine dye.

Background:Soil-transmitted helminth(STH)infections often affect the poorest and most deprived *** order to generate reliable data for planning a school based deworming program,we conducted a survey among primary school children studying in government schools in the Indian state of Uttar *** objectives of our survey were to estimate the prevalence and intensity of STH ***:We conducted a cross-sectional survey among children studying in 130 primary schools from 9 agroclimatic zones,during May-August *** about socio-demographic details,defecation and handhygiene practices,and stool samples were collected from the school *** samples were examined using the Kato-Katz ***:Stool samples from 6421 school children were *** overall weighted prevalence of any STH in the State was 75.6%(95%CI:71.2-79.5).The prevalence was more than 50%in six of the nine agro-climatic *** was the most prevalent STH(prevalence:69.6%),followed by hookworm(prevalence:22.6%)and ***(4.6%).The majority of the STH infections were of low *** practice of open defecation and not washing hands with soap after defecation and residence in kutcha house were significant risk factors of STH ***:STH prevalence among primary school children in Uttar Pradesh was *** the WHO guidelines on deworming frequency according to STH prevalence,Govt of Uttar Pradesh needs to implement a school-based deworming program with bi-annual *** findings of our survey would also help monitor the performance of school based deworming programme.
