Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)is the major subtype of esophageal cancer that is prevalent in Eastern *** recent advances in therapy,the outcome of ESCC patients is still ***(miRNAs)are non-coding RNAs which can negatively modulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional *** involvement and roles of miRNAs have become one of the hot topics of cancer research in recent *** ESCC,genetic variations within miRNA coding genes were found to have distinct epidemiological significance in different *** expression of several miRNAs was reported to be associated with therapeutic ***,miRNAs can act either in an oncogenic or a tumor-suppressive manner during tumorigenesis of ESCC by interrupting signaling pathways associated with cell proliferation,metabolism,cancer stemness,and resistance to chemo-or ***,miRNAs modulate metastasis of ESCC by targeting genes that regulate cytoskeleton dynamics,extracellular matrix remodeling,epithelial-mesenchymal transition,and tumor *** importantly,mounting evidence suggests that inhibiting oncogenic miRNAs or restoring the loss of tumor-suppressive miRNAs has therapeutic potential in the treatment of ***,we review and discuss recent studies on the significance,biological functions,and therapeutic potential of miRNAs in tumorigenesis and metastasis of ESCC.

Development of Conceptual Framework from the View of Patients and Professionals on Patient Engagement: A Qualitative Study in Hong Kong SAR, China

Human papilloma virus (HPV), a common DNA virus, has been recognized as a causative agent for cervical cancer, one of the commonest cancer in women. While cervical cancer prevention has been achieved through screening women with cervical cytology, advances in the development of molecular techniques to detect HPV has enabled the exploration of the application of HPV detection as an ancillary tool in cervical cancer prevention. HPV detection may be useful on (1) primary screening of cervical cancer, (2) triage of patients with atypical cervical cytology and (3) follow up of patients after treatment.

Objective: To investigate patient engagement to gain understandings of professional and patient’s views and inform the development of a patient engagement conceptual framework for further development of a valid and reliable evaluated measure. Method: 17 selected hospitals from Hong Kong East Cluster, Hong Kong West Cluster, Kowloon Central Cluster, Kowloon East Cluster and New Territory East Cluster of Hospital Authority Hong Kong involved in the study. Focus groups were conducted with 37 medical staffs, which included 15 doctors and 22 nurses, and 33 patients. Semi-structured qualitative interview study, with purposive sampling and constant comparative analysis. Results: Data were analyzed using a qualitative approach of latent content analysis. Patient engagement is a multi-dimensional concept. Five hierarchical themes separately from the patient and medical staff’s perspectives containing different conceptions and attitudes related to patient engagement have been identified and summarized. Through analyzing both professional and patients’ perspectives, a hierarchical framework incorporating patients-professional dynamically fluctuating relationship was built. The framework divides engagement into five levels and five stages. Conclusions: Patient engagement is recognized by more patients and professionals as a means and a cornerstone to build the foundation of patient-centered-care. Our framework encourages that patient engagement related to not only an individual patient’s behavior but a reciprocal, dynamic and pluralistic relationship with their professionals and healthcare systems. Understand this relationship can help us better conceptualizing, evaluating, and implementing interventions to improve the population’s health.

Axonal regeneration following surgical nerve repair is slow and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery which sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outweigh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,with suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery with minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve wrap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adjustable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the wrap degrades within 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve wrap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models while off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared with systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

Seismic performance of cable-sliding friction bearing system for isolated bridges

During past strong earthquakes, highway bridges have sustained severe damage or even collapse due to excessive displacements and/or very large lateral forces. For commonly used isolation bearings with a pure friction sliding surface, seismic forces may be reduced but displacements are often unconstrained. In this paper, an alternative seismic bearing system, called the cable-sliding friction bearing system, is developed by integrating seismic isolation devices with displacement restrainers consisting of cables attached to the upper and lower plates of the bearing. Restoring forces are provided to limit the displacements of the sliding component. Design parameters including the length and stiffness of the cables, friction coefficient, strength of the shear bolt in a fixed-type bearing, and movements under earthquake excitations are discussed. Laboratory testing of a prototype bearing subjected to vertical loads and quasi-static cyclic lateral loads, and corresponding numerical finite element simulation analysis, were carried out. It is shown that the numerical simulation shows good agreement with the experimental force-displacement hysteretic response, indicating the viability of the new bearing system. In addition, practical application of this bearing system to a multi-span bridge in China and its design advantages are discussed.

This paper provides an overview of the impacts of the original works of Professor Duzheng YE on a selected set of observational and model studies with which the present author has been associated over the past several decades. The main themes of these works include atmospheric energy dispersion, air–land interactions over the Tibetan Plateau, and El Ni n？orelated air–sea coupling over East *** dispersive behavior of observed atmospheric fluctuations accompanying cold surge events in East Asia is demonstrated. Cold air outbreaks over Korea and southern China are coincident with the successive downstream development of troughs and ridges, with the group velocity of such wave packets being notably faster than the phase propagation speed of individual troughs and ridges. In a more general context, dispersive features are also discernible from lagged teleconnection charts and cross-spectra of observed and model-simulated geopotential height variations on 10–30-day time *** the output from a high-resolution general circulation model, the relative contributions of condensational, sensible, and radiative heating to the atmospheric energy budget over the Tibetan Plateau are documented. The rapid changes of the upper tropospheric Tibetan anticyclone and East Asian mei-yu（＂plum rain＂） precipitation band associated with the development of the Asian monsoon system are *** principal anomalies in sea level pressure, surface wind, precipitation and sea surface temperature over southeastern China and the Philippine Sea region during El Nio events are presented. The contributions of remote El Nio-related forcing and local air–sea interaction to the occurrence of these anomalies are assessed.
