The hygienic performance of simple storage and biological treatment of manure was evaluated using effluents collected from 44 hog farms across Brittany, France. Analyses were carried out on raw manure, on the sludge stored after biological treatment and on the liquid phase stored in a lagoon after sludge settling or sludge dewatering. The effect of the treatments was evaluated on e. coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Sequential feeding of manure maintained a high level of enteric bacteria in storage tanks regardless the duration of storage, and biological treatment only slightly reduced the concentration of enteric bacteria （average reduction in raw manure and sludge 〈 2.2 log10）. Salmonella and L. monocytogenes were identified in raw manure （50% and 18.2% of samples, respectively）, in sludge （14.8% and 11.1%）, and in lagoons （8.0% and 24%）, suggesting that there is still a sanitary risk after biological treatment of manure. Salmonella Derby and L. monocytogenes serotype 4b each accounted for 50% of the serotypes identified in the samples. There was no correlation between the presence of the two pathogenic bacteria and the size of the herd or the duration of manure storage. However, environmental conditions in the lagoons appeared to favor the presence ofL. monocytogenes and hence a risk of disseminating this pathogen in the environment.

Background: The growth and recurrence of solid tumours, including squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region, have been related to the behaviour of a small subpopulation of tumour initiating or cancer stem cells, sub-population marked by its high expression of the cell surface marker CD44. In addition to their isolation and characterization, it is also important to identify the factors that facilitate self renewal and survival of these tumour initiating cells. Purpose: To investigate the role that stromal fibroblasts, one of the major components of tumour stroma, have on clonal expansion and survival of tumour initiating cells in oral malignancies. Methods: Seven cell lines derived from oral dysplasias and oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) were investigated for their stem cell related behaviour and molecular changes while grown in vitro alone or in co-culture with stromal fibroblasts. Safety and Tolerability of edivoxetine for Long-Term Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in Adult Patients

This 12-month open-label, but dose-blinded extension phase, evaluated the safety and tolerability of flexibly-dosed edivoxetine (6, 9, 12 or 18 mg once daily) in patients (N = 397) with major depressive disorder, who completed the 10-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled acute phase of the *** patients were treated with edivoxetine during the extension phase. The mean age of the patients was 45 years, and most were white females. Safety evaluations included assessment of treatment-emergent adverse events (TeAes), laboratory and vital sign measures, and suicidality. Within-group t-tests based on a 2-sided significance level of 0.05 and 95% confidence levels were used to assess whether changes from baseline were statistically significant from zero. The overall completion rate was 54%. Adverse event was the most common (14.4%) reason for discontinuation, which included blood pressure increased (1.3%), heart rate increased (1.3%), anxiety (1.0%), and tachycardia (1.0%). At least 1 TeAe was reported by 72.3% of patients, of which headache (10.8%) and hyperhidrosis (10.1%) were the most common;2.8% of patients had ≥1 serious adverse events, and there were no completed suicides. No clinically relevant changes were observed in most laboratory measures. Potentially clinically significant changes in ALT values occurred in 1.8% of patients, and either normalized or had decreased by the last assessment. Mean increases in blood pressure and pulse were consistent with those observed in the acute phase and appeared to reach a plateau within 3 to 5 months of treatment. In conclusion, safety and tolerability findings during this long-term extension phase evaluation of edivoxetine were consistent with its norepinephrine reuptake inhibition profile.

This book takes the reader through the actual manufacturing process of making a typical chip, from start to finish, including a detailed discussion of each step, in plain language. The evolution of today's technology is added to the story, as seen through the eyes of the engineers who solved some of the problems. The authors are well suited to that discussion since they are three of those same engineers. They have a broad exposure to the industry and its technology that extends all the way back to Shockley Laboratories, the first semiconductor manufacturer in Silicon Valley. The CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) process flow is the focus of the discussion and is covered in ten chapters. The vast majority of chips made today are fabricated using this general method. In order to ensure that all readers are comfortable with the vocabulary, the first chapter carefully and clearly introduces the science concepts found in later chapters. A chapter is devoted to pointing out the differences in other manufacturing methods, such as the gallium arsenide technology that produces chips for cell phones. In addition, a chapter describing the nature of the semiconductor industry from a business perspective is included. "The entire process of making a chip is surprisingly easy to understand. The part of the story that defies belief is the tiny dimensions: the conducting wires and other structures on a chip are more than a hundred times thinner than a hair - and getting thinner with every new chip design."

Background: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and sickle cell disease are common genetic defects of red blood cells that lead to hemolytic anemia. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency in sickle cell patients is unknown in Benin. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in sickle cell patients at the CNHU-HKM of Cotonou. Methods: This prospective study was conducted from April to November 2022 at the blood-related diseases teaching clinic and included sickle cell patients in the stationary phase. G6PD determination was performed using the enzymatic method on a Mindray BS 200 machine following the Herz method. Hematological parameters were determined using the XT 4000i analyzer and supplemented by a blood smear stained with May Grunwald Giemsa. Data were analyzed using epi Info 3.5.4 software. Results: One hundred and sixty-four sickle cell patients (80 SS homozygotes and 84 SC heterozygotes) in the intercritical phase, with a mean age of 26.30 ± 10.76 years, were included. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 9.1% (15 cases found in 7 SS patients and 8 SC patients). In G6PD-deficient patients, the mean concentration of the enzyme was lower in Hb SC heterozygotes than in Hb SS homozygotes: 3.56 IU/g Hb versus 4.98 IU/g Hb. The mean reticulocyte count was 231.43 G/L in the deficient group, compared to 216.32 G/L in the non-deficient group. Conclusion: The preliminary results of our study reveal a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency in sickle cell patients. The impact of this association on hematologic and biological parameters should be evaluated for better management of sickle cell disease.

The wall shear stress （WSS） that a moving fluid exerts on a surface affects many processes including those relating to vascular function. WSS plays an important role in normal physiology （e.g. angiogenesis） and affects the microvasculature＇s primary function of molecular transport. Points of fluctuating WSS show abnormalities in a number of diseases; however, there is no established technique for measuring WSS directly in physiological systems. All current methods rely on estimates obtained from measured velocity gradients in bulk flow data. In this work, we report a nanosensor that can directly measure WSS in microfluidic chambers with sub-micron spatial resolution by using a specific type of virus, the bacteriophage M13, which has been fluorescently labeled and anchored to a surface. It is demonstrated that the nanosensor can be calibrated and adapted for biological tissue, revealing WSS in micro-domains of cells that cannot be calculated accurately from bulk flow measurements. This method lends itself to a platform applicable to many applications in biology and microfluidics.
