Many species exhibit color polymorphisms which have distinct physiological and behavioral ***,the consistency of morph trait covariation patterns across species,time,and ecological contexts remains *** trait covariation is especially relevant in the context of invasion biology and urban ***,physiological traits pertaining to energy maintenance are crucial to fitness,given their immediate ties to individual reproduction,growth,and population *** investigated the physiological traits of Podarcis muralis,a versatile color polymorphic species that thrives in urban environments(including invasive populations in Ohio,USA).We measured five physiological traits(plasma corticosterone and triglycerides,hematocrit,body condition,and field body temperature),which compose an integrated multivariate *** then tested variation among co-occurring color morphs in the context of establishment in an urban *** found that the traits describing physiological status and strategy shifted across the active season in a morph-dependent manner—the white and yellow morphs exhibited clearly different multivariate physiological phenotypes,characterized primarily by differences in plasma *** suggests that morphs have different strategies in physiological regulation,the flexibility of which is crucial to urban *** white-yellow morph exhibited an intermediate phenotype,suggesting an intermediary energy maintenance *** morphs also exhibited distinct phenotypes,but the low prevalence of this morph in our study populations precludes clear *** work provides insight into how differences among stable polymorphisms exist across axes of the phenotype and how this variation may aid in establishment within novel environments.

Fertility and sexual life of men after their forties and in older age

Owing to the demographic development, the aging male will require more consideration in future. In contrast to arapid decline of estradiol during menopause in women, the process of aging in the male is retarded and subject to highindividual variations. Impairment of spermatogenesis is observed as a continuous process occurring over decades. How-ever, only about 50% of men in their eighties show complete loss of fertility. In principle, spermatogenesis may be re-tained well into senescence. Of importance for the individual health condition is the fact that the number of Leydig cellsdeclines with advancing age. Thus, altered sex hormone concentrations in aging men result from both functional distur-bances and a gradual reduction in Leydig cells. Furthermore, an impaired feed-back mechanism of the pituitary-gonadalaxis occurs, with disappearance of the circadian testosterone (T) rhythm. LH and FSH levels are increased, and a re-duced bioavailability of sex hormones is observed. Lower total testosterone concentrations in men over 60 years are ac-companied by clinical signs of reduced virility, such as decreased muscle mass and strength as well as reduced sexualhair growth and libido. An age-related decline in androgen secretion and plasma testosterone levels therefore suggeststhe use of androgen supplementation. However, there is a lack of risk-benefit long-term studies. Increased research inthe male is mandatory to meet the requirements of the aging population. This should include the availability of preciseepidemiological data about the frequency of partial androgen deficiency in aging males (PADAM).(Asian J Androl 2001 Mar; 3: 1-7)

Drug treatment remains an active domain in the therapy of male fertility disorders. Although there are only a fewconditions that allow causal treatment, rational approaches are possible in many cases. Best results are obtained in casesrequiring an anti-inflammatory treatment and in patients with an impaired sperm transport. High-dosage administrationof FSH is a promising new development, aimed particularly at improving the disturbed sperm structures. A careful di-agnostic work-up with elucidation of the underlying disease is essential to achieve a successful therapy.

Comparative studies on storage cells in tardigrades during starvation and anhydrobiosis

The impact of starvation and anhydrobiosis on the number and size of the storage cells in the tardigrade species Milnesiumtardigradum, Paramacrobiotus tonollii and Macrobiolus sapiens was investigated to gain more insight on the energeticside of anhydrobiosis. Storage cells are free floating cells within the body cavity of tardigrades and are presumed to store and releaseenergy in form of glycogen, protein and fat to maintain a constant nutrient regime for the other tissues. The body size of theanimals was not correlated with the size of the storage cells, however, M. tardigradum the largest species analysed also had thelargest storage cells. A reduction in the size of the storage cells is apparent in all three species after seven days of starvation. Aseven-day period of anhydrobiosis leads to a decrease in cell size in M. tardigradum but not in P. tonollii and M. sapiens. AlthoughM. sapiens was raised on green algae, and M. tardigradum and P. tonollii were fed with rotifers and nematodes this differencein nourishment was not reflected in the response of the storage cells to

Aim： To investigate age-related inflammatory events in the male genital tract. Methods： In a total of 4 265 randomly collected patients attending the andrological outpatient clinic of the Center for Dermatology and Andrology, University of Giessen, Germany, ejaculate volume, pH-value, sperm concentration, total and progressive sperm motility, concentration of polymorphonuclear （PMN） elastase, number of peroxidase-positive cells and fructose were measured and correlated with patient＇s age. Results： While ejaculate volume, motility and fructose all correlated negatively with age, sperm concentration, PMN elastase and the pH-value showed a positive correlation. The prevalence of male genital tract inflammation （as defined by PMN elastase 〉 250 ng/mL） and its severity increased significantly. PMN elastase did not correlate with sperm motility. Fructose as a marker of seminal vesicle function showed a significant negative relationship with the PMN elastase levels, the number of peroxidase-positive cells and sperm motility. Conclusion： The significant increases of PMN elastase levels as marker of male genital tract inflammation in older men appear to be indicative of age-related changes in local immunoregulatory mechanisms. Because there is no association of PMN elastase with sperm motility, a direct inhibitory effect of this enzyme can be excluded.

Effects of Basella alba and Hibiscus macranthus extracts on testosterone production of adult rat and bull Leydig cells

Aim： To determine the androgenic effects of Basella alba and Hibiscus macranthus extracts in the rat and the bull, and to develop a novel in vitro test system using Leydig cells from bull testes. Methods： The effect of methanol extracts from both plants on testosterone production in isolated Leydig cells from the rat and the bull was analyzed using ^125I-radioimmunoassay （^125I-RIA）. Rat Leydig cells were obtained by common methods, whereas a novel technique was used to purify Leydig cells from bull testes. Results： Bull testes from the slaughter house were a cheap source of pure Leydig cells. In culture, these cells produced testosterone for 5-6 days, which can be stimulated by human chorionic gonadotrophin （hCG）. Basella alba extracts significantly enhanced testosterone production in bull and rat Leydig cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Hibiscus macranthus showed no androgenic effect but was shown to inhibit testosterone production at higher concentrations. Conclusion： Leydig cells purified from bull testes can be used as an alternative tool in experimental animal research. Certain fractions of Basella alba extract demonstrated androgenic potential whereas Hibiscus macranthus extracts did not.

Metasediments from the Tethyan Himalaya (TH) were sampled for paleomagnetic studies in several areas. In this paper, we will present the first results from Carboniferous and Early Triassic marly limestones from Hidden Valley (Central Nepal).. The paleomagnetic directions reflect a Tertiary overprint probably synchronous with the metamorphism. In this area, the metamorphic conditions reached during Tertiary are poorly constrained. Temperatures are probably in between 300 and 400℃. The age of the thermal event is still debated. No geochronological data is available in this area. Previously published geochronological data from the northern part of TH metasediments in India ranges from 47 to 42Ma (Ar/Ar Illite) after Weissman et al. (1999) and Bonhomme and Garzanti (1991). While in the southern part (close to HHC), biotite Ar/Ar data ranges from 30 to 26Ma in Marsyandi Valley (Coleman and Hodges, 1998) and muscovite Ar/Ar ranges from 18 to 12Ma in the upper Kali Gandaki Valley (Godin et al., 1998).. In this context, the age of the magnetization can′t be defined with precision.

Comparison of high-resolution ultrasound and MR-enterography in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To compare the results of high-resolution ultrasound(HR-US) and magnetic resonance enterography(MRE) examinations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:The reports of 250 consecutive cases with known IBD,who had an MRE and HR-US examination,were retrospectively *** a patient-based approach we evaluated morphological disease features such as affected bowel wall,stenosis,abscess and *** comparison between the two modalities was based on the hypothesis,that any pathological change described in any imaging modality was a true finding,as no further standard of reference was available for complete ***:Two hundred and fifty examinations representing 207 different patients were *** modalities assessed similar bowel wall changes in 65% of the examinations,with more US findings in 11% and more MRE findings in 15%.When the reports were analyzed with regard to "bowel wall inflammation",US reported more findings in 2%,while MRE reported more findings in 53%.Stenoses were assessed to be identical in 8%,while US found more in 3% and MRE in 29%(P < 0.01).For abscess detection,US showed more findings in 2%(n = 4) while MRE detected more in 6%(n = 16).US detected more fistulas in 1%(n = 2),while MRE detected more in 13%(n = 32)(P < 0.001).The most common reason for no detected pathology by US was a difficult to assess anatomical region(lesser pelvis,n = 72).CONCLUSION:US can miss clinically relevant pathological changes in patients with IBD mostly due to difficulty in assessing certain anatomical regions.

Estimate of oxygen consumption and intracellular zinc concentration of human spermatozoa in relation to motility

Aim: To investigate the human sperm oxygen/energy consumption and zinc content in relation to motility. Methods: In washed spermatozoa from 67 ejaculates, the oxygen consumption was determined. Following calculation of the total oxygen consumed by the Ideal Gas Law, the energy consumption of spermatozoa was calculated. In addition, the zinc content of the sperm was determined using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The resulting data were correlated to the vitality and motility. Results: The oxygen consumption averaged 0.24μmol/106 sperm×24 h, 0.28μmol/106 live sperm×24 h and 0.85μmol/106 live & motile sperm×24 h. Further calculations revealed that sperm motility was the most energy consuming process (164.31 mJ/106 motile spermatozoa×24 h), while the oxygen consumption of the total spermatozoa was 46.06 mJ/106 spermatozoa×24 h. The correlation of the oxygen/ energy consumption and zinc content with motility showed significant negative correlations (r= -0.759; P<0.0001 and r=-0.441; P<0.0001, respectively). However, when correlating sperm energy consumption with the zinc content, a significant positive relation (r=0.323; P=0.01) was observed. Conclusion: Poorly motile sperm are actually wasting the available energy. Moreover, our data clearly support the 'Geometric Clutch Model' of the axoneme function and demonstrate the importance of the outer dense fibers for the generation of sperm motility, especially progressive motility.
