Cancers remain among the most devastating diseases in the human population in spite of considerable advances in limiting their impact on lifespan and healthspan.The multifactorial nature of cancers,as well as the number of tissues and organs that are affected,have exposed a considerable diversity in mechanistic features that are reflected in the wide array of therapeutic strategies that have been adopted.Cachexia is manifested in a number of diseases ranging from cancers to diabetes and ageing.In the context of cancers,a majority of patients experience cachexia and succumb to death due to the indirect effects of tumorigenesis that drain the energy reserves of different organs.Considerable information is available on the pathophysiological features of cancer cachexia,however limited knowledge has been acquired on the resident stem cell populations,and their function in the context of these diseases.Here we review current knowledge on cancer cachexia and focus on how tissues and their resident stem and progenitor cell populations are individually affected.

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of granulocyte colony stimulating factors(G-CSF)in liver transplanted patients with hepatitis C(HCV)recurrence and Pegylated-IFN α-2b induced neutropenia,and to evaluate the impact of G-CSF administration on virological response. METHODS:Sixty-eight patients undergoing antiviral treatment for post-liver transplantation(OLT)HCV recurrence were enrolled.All patients developing neutropenia received G-CSF. RESULTS:Twenty three(34%)received G-CSF.Mean neutrophil count at the onset of neutropenia was 700/mmc(range 400-750/mmc);after 1 mo of G-CSF it increased to 1210/mmc(range 300-5590/mmc) (Pde novo autoimmune hepatitis(Pde novo autoimmune hepatitis.

AIM To investigate the possible predictive role of routinely used glycemic parameters for a first venous thromboembolism(VTE) episode in gastrointestinal(GI) cancer ambulatory patients-with or without clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes(T2D) or obesity-treated with chemotherapy.METHODS Pre-treatment fasting blood glucose,insulin,glycated hemoglobin(Hb A1c) and homeostasis model of risk assessment(HOMA) were retrospectively evaluated in a cohort study of 342 GI cancer patients. Surgery was performed in 142(42%) patients with primary cancer,30(21%) and 112(79%) of whom received neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies,respectively. Firstline chemotherapy was administered in 200(58%) patients with metastatic disease. The study outcome was defined as the occurrence of a first symptomatic or asymptomatic VTE episode during active treatment.RESULTS Impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) or T2 D were diagnosed in 30% of GI cancer patients,while overweight/obesity had an incidence of 41%. VTE occurred in 9.4% of patients(7% of non-diabetic non-obese),especially in those with a high ECOG score(P = 0.025). No significant association was found between VTE incidence and T2 D,obesity,different tumor types,metastatic disease,Khorana class of risk,or different anti-cancer drugs,although VTE rates were substantially higher in patients receiving bevacizumab(17% vs 8%,P = 0.044). Conversely,all glucose metabolic indexes were associated with increased VTE risk at ROC analysis. Multivariate Cox proportional analyses confirmed that HOMA index(HR = 4.13,95%CI: 1.63-10.5) or fasting blood glucose(HR = 3.56,95%CI: 1.51-8.39) were independent predictors of VTE occurrence during chemotherapy.CONCLUSION The results here reported demonstrate that evaluating glucose metabolic asset may allow for VTE risk stratification in GI cancer,helping to identify chemotherapy-treated patients who might benefit from thromboprophylaxis. Further multicenter prospective studies involving a larger number of patients are presently needed.

The pursuit of this paper is to collect principal reviews and systematic reviews about hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC) and cytoreductive surgery(CRS) used in colorectal cancer(CRC).We focus on principal biological aspects of CRC,hyperthermia effects,and surgical procedures.We searched PubMed/MEDLINE for the principal reviews and systematic reviews published from 2010 to 2021 regarding the bimodal treatment(CRS + HIPEC) against local and advanced CRC.In the literature,from several studies,it seems that the efficacy of bimodal treatment with an accurate CRS can extend overall survival.despite these studies,there are not still any straight guidelines more detailed and scheduled about the use of combined treatment in patients with CRC.Even if the concept is still not very clear and shared,after a careful evaluation of the published data,and after some technical and pathophysiological descriptions,we concluded that it is possible to improve the overall survival and quality of life and to reduce the tumor relapse in patients affected by locally advanced(pT4) CRC with peritoneal metastases.

The effect of FER zeolite acid sites in methanol-to-dimethyl-ether catalytic dehydration

In this paper, the effect of acidity of zeolites with FER framework was studied in the methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether reaction, by comparing catalysts with different Si/Al ratios(namely 8, 30 and60). The aim of this work was to investigate how the acid sites concentration, strength, distribution and typology(Br?nsted and Lewis) affect methanol conversion, DME selectivity and coke formation. It was found that the aluminium content affects slightly acid sites strength whilst a relevant effect on acid sites concentration and distribution(Br?nsted/Lewis) was observed as 24% of Lewis sites were found on Alrichest samples, whilst less than 10% of Lewis acid sites were observed on FER at higher Si/Al ratio. All the investigated catalyst samples showed a selectivity toward DME always greater than 0.9 and samples with the lowest Si/Al ratio exhibit the best performances in terms of methanol conversion, approaching the theoretical equilibrium value(around 0.85) at temperatures below 200 °C. Turnover-frequency analysis suggests that this result seems to be related not only to the higher amount of acid sites but also that the presence of Lewis acid sites may play a significant role in converting methanol. On the other hand, the presence of Lewis acid sites, combined with a high acidity, promote the formation of by-products(mainly methane) and coke deposition during the reaction. As final evidence, all the investigated catalysts exhibit very high resistance to deactivation by coke deposition, over 60 h continuous test, and a GC–MS analysis of the coke deposited on the catalyst surface reveals tetra-methyl benzene as main component.

The catalytic conversion of methanol to dimethyl ether(DME) over a series of home-made FER-type zeolites having different acidities and commercial γ-Al_2O_3 has been studied with the aim to understand the impact of adding water in the reactant stream on the catalytic behavior on investigated materials. Cofeeding water with methanol, the alcohol conversion was slightly reduced over the investigated zeolites while the catalytic activity of γ-Al_2O_3, the traditional catalyst of MeOH-to-DME conversion, was strongly inhibited. It was also found that, for the investigated zeolites, both the amount and the initial deposition rate of the coke formed during the reaction were reduced when water was co-fed with methanol while no significant effects on both methanol conversion and DME selectivity were observed under the investigated conditions.

Ga–Al-MFI samples were synthesized in hydrothermal conditions from gels of composition 1.08 CH_3 NH_2–0.134 TPABr–1 SiO_2–x Al_2O_3–y Ga_2O_3–40 H_2O at 175 °C for 7 days, with x = 0.005 and 0.0025, y = 0.005, 0.010 and 0.020. The samples were characterized by XRD, BET measurements, thermal analysis(TGA–DTA) atomic absorption and high resolution solid state MAS27 Al and71 Ga NMR measurements. The aromatization of propane was studied as catalytic test. The activity and selectivity of the catalysts were determined for benzene, toluene and xylenes on the one hand and for methane and ethane on the other hand. The most active sample was obtained with the highest Ga/Al ratio. For this sample, the BTX selectivity obtained by aromatization was always higher than the hydrocracking selectivity leading to methane and ethane. The relative amount of toluene was higher than that of benzene and of xylenes. The samples were deactivated by coke formation that was revealed more severe for the most active sample.
