Microbially induced carbonate precipitation(MICP)is a promising technique for the autonomous healing of concrete *** this study,the effect of ph on MICP was *** results indicate that the MICP process was inhibited when the ph was higher than *** vaterite and calcite were produced when the ph wasduced when the ph was>*** concrete aggregates(RCA)coated with sodium silicate have been proposed as protective carriers for microbial healing *** the presence of the coated RCA resulted in a loss of the splitting tension strength of the concrete,the loaded healing agents were highly efficient in self-healing *** incorporated with 20%RCA loaded with healing agents exhibited the best self-healing *** the initial crack widths were between 0.3 and 0.4 mm,the 7-d mean healing rate was approximately 90%.At 28 d,the crack area filling ratio was 86.4%,while its water tightness recovery ratio was 74.4%and 29.8%,respectively,for rapid and slow *** study suggests that RCA coated with sodium silicate is an effective method for packaging microbial healing agents and has great potential for developing cost-effective self-healing concrete.

In recent years,the contamination of water by arsenic reached alarming levels in many countries of the world,attracting the interest of many researchers engaged in testing methodologies able to remove this harmful *** important aspect that must be taken into consideration is the possibility to find arsenic in different chemical forms which could require different approaches for its *** this aim,a speciation analysis appears to be crucial for better understanding the behavior of arsenic species in aqueous solutions,especially in presence of compounds with marked chelating *** can be identified as good sequestering agents and,at this purpose,this manuscript intends to investigate the interaction of As(Ⅲ)with three phosphonic acids derived from nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA)by replacements of one(N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid,NTAP),two(N,N-Bis-(phosphonomethyl)glycine,NTA2P)and three(Nitrilotri(methylphosphonic acid),NTA3P)carboxylic groups with the same number of phosphonate *** in-depth potentiometric and calorimetric investigation allowed to determine speciation models featured by simple ML,MLH i and ML(OH)species.A complete thermodynamic characterization of the systems is reported together with the definition of coordination mode by mass spectrometry *** the light of the speciation models,the possibility of using these ligands in arsenic removal techniques was assessed by determining the pL 0.5(the concentration of ligand able to remove the 50%of metal ion present in trace).All ligands show a good sequestering ability,in particular under the conditions of fresh water,following the trend NTA3P>NTA2P>NTAP.

Effect of omeprazole on symptoms and ultrastructural esophageal damage in acid bile reflux

AIM: To value whether omeprazole could induce the healing of dIS and regression of symptoms in patients with dGER. METHOdS: We enrolled 15 symptomatic patients with a pathological esophageal 24-h ph-metry and bilimetry. Patients underwent endoscopy and biopsies were taken from the distal esophagus. Specimens were analyzed at histology and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Patients were treated with omeprazole 40 mg/d for 3 mo and then endoscopy with biopsies was repeated. Patients with persistent heartburn and/or with an incomplete recovery of dIS were treated for 3 more months and endoscopy with biopsies was performed. RESULTS: Nine patients had a non-erosive reflux disease at endoscopy (NERd) while 6 had erosive esophagitis (ERd). At histology, of the 6 patients with erosive esophagitis, 5 had mild esophagitis and 1 moderate esophagitis. No patients with NERd showed histological signs of esophagitis. After 3 mo of therapy, 13/15 patients (86.7%,Pd a complete recovery of dIS and disappearance of heartburn. Of the 2 patients treated for 3 more months, complete recovery of dIS and heartburn were achieved in one. CONCLUSION: Three or 6 mo of omeprazole therapy led to a complete regression of the ultrastructural esophageal damage in 86.7% and in 93% of patients with dGER, NERd and ERd respectively. The ultrastructural recovery of the epithelium was accompanied by regression of heartburn in all cases.

Nitrogen Release from Slow-Release Fertilizers in Soils with different Microbial Activities

Soil microbial activity is recognized as an important factor affecting nitrogen (N) release from slow-release fertilizers. However,studies on the effect of size and activity of soil microflora on fertilizer degradation have provided contrasting results. To date, no clear relationships exist between soil microbial activity and the release of N from slow-release fertilizers. Hence, the aim of this study was to better understand such relationships by determining the release of N from three slow-release fertilizers in soils with different microbial activities. Soils were amended with urea-formaldehyde (UF), isobutylidene diurea (IBdU), and crotonylidene diurea (CdU). Urea, a soluble fertilizer, was used as the control. Fertilized soil samples were placed in a leaching system, and the release of N was determined by measuring ammonium-N and nitrate-N concentrations in leachates during 90 d of incubation. Non-linear regression was used to fit N leaching rate to a first-order model. In all the treated soils, N was released in the order: urea (89%–100%) > IBdU (59%–94%) >UF (46%–73%) > CdU (44%–56%). At the end of incubation, N released from CdU did not differ (P > 0.05) among soils. On the contrary, UF and IBdU released significantly lower (P d lower *** rate constant (K_0) for UF was lower (P ph. Trans-acting small interfering RNAs （ta-siRNAs） are plant-specific siRNAs released from TAS precursor tran- scripts after microRNA-dependent cleavage, conversion into double-stranded RNA, and dicer-dependent phased process- ing. Like microRNAs （miRNAs）, ta-siRNAs direct site-specific cleavage of target RNAs at sites of extensive complementarity. Here, we show that the dICER-LIKE 4 protein of physcomitrella patens （PpdCL4） is essential for the biogenesis of 21 nucleotide （nt） ta-siRNAs. In APpdCL4 mutants, off-sized 23 and 24-nt ta-siRNAs accumulated as the result of PpdCL3 activity. APpdCL4 mutants display severe abnormalities throughout physcomitrella development, including sterility, that were fully reversed in APpdCL3/APpdCL4 double-mutant plants. Therefore, PpdCL3 activity, not loss of PpdCL4 function per se, is the cause of the APpdCL4 phenotypes. Additionally, we describe several new physcomitrella trans-acting siRNA loci, three of which belong to a new family, TA56. TAS6 loci are typified by sliced miR156 and miR529 target sites and are in close proximity to PpTAS3 loci.

The diversity of Chrysophycean Algae in an Arctic Zone of River and Sea Water Mixing, Russia

According to the results of studies in the region of lower Yenisei River to the Kara Sea shelf in September 2009, the flora of chrysophyte algae in the zone of river and sea water mixing comprises 43 species of the classes Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae. Most of them are cosmopolitan and widespread, but four rare species have also been recorded. The most frequent species are Synura petersenii f. petersenii, S. petersenii f. kufferathii, Spiniferomonas takahashii, Mallomonas acaroides, and M. crassisquama. The composition of chrysophyte flora in the study region is similar to that in some lakes of the Taimyr Peninsula. It has been found that the diversity of chrysophytes in the zone of river and sea water mixing depends on water salinity, with a group of species occurring at increased salinity levels. It includes Chrysosphaerella coronacircumspina (5.2‰), Kephyrion spirale (5.2‰) and Mallomonas crassisquama (8‰). These data contribute to knowledge of how the distribution of chrysophytes responds to changes in ecological conditions such as water salinity, turbidity, ph, and concentrations of oxygen and mineral phosphorus.
