Identification of parameter to assess cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures subjected to aging and moisture conditioning

This study comprehensively evaluated different parameters based on tensile strength testing to assess the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures subjected to aging and moisture conditioning.For this purpose,two sources of aggregates were selected to produce hot and warm mix asphalt mixtures.Asphalt mixtures were subjected to short term and long term aging,three levels of moisture conditioning(freeze thaw cycles),and tested at two temperatures(15℃and 25℃).The load-displacement data was used to determine the fracture work density,fracture energy,toughness index,cracking resistance index,cracking tolerance index,and rate dependent cracking index.It was noticed that moisture conditioning increased the variability of the different parameters.The cracking tolerance index and rate dependent cracking index parameter had a much higher coefficient of variation(Co V)with a maximum value close to 50%.Indirect tensile strength,fracture energy,and fracture work density appropriately captured the effect of moisture on cracking resistance of mixtures.The cracking resistance index,cracking tolerance index,and rate dependent cracking index increased with an increase in the moisture conditioning level.The Statistical analysis showed that tensile strength,fracture work density,and fracture energy were significantly influenced by different aging and moisture conditions evaluated.Fracture energy showed better association with fatigue life of asphalt mixtures subjected to three freeze-thaw cycles compared to tensile strength.Further,the fatigue life prediction models showed that both indirect tensile strength and fracture energy significantly influence the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures subjected to aging and moisture conditioning.

Biomaterial research has been going on for several years,and many companies are heavily investing in new product development.However,it is a contentious field of science.Biomaterial science is a field that combines materials science and medicine.The replacement or restoration of damaged tissues or organs enhances the patient’s quality of life.The deciding aspect is whether or not the body will accept a biomaterial.A biomaterial used for an implant must possess certain qualities to survive a long time.When a biomaterial is used for an implant,it must have specific properties to be long-lasting.A variety of materials are used in biomedical applications.They are widely used today and can be used individually or in combination.This review will aid researchers in the selection and assessment of biomaterials.Before using a biomaterial,its mechanical and physical properties should be considered.Recent biomaterials have a structure that closely resembles that of tissue.Antiinfective biomaterials and surfaces are being developed using advanced antifouling,bactericidal,and antibiofilm technologies.This review tries to cover critical features of biomaterials needed for tissue engineering,such as bioactivity,self-assembly,structural hierarchy,applications,heart valves,skin repair,bio-design,essential ideas in biomaterials,bioactive biomaterials,bioresorbable biomaterials,biomaterials in medical practice,biomedical function for design,biomaterial properties such as biocompatibility,heat response,non-toxicity,mechanical properties,physical properties,wear,and corrosion,as well as biomaterial properties such surfaces that are antibacterial,nanostructured materials,and biofilm disrupting compounds,are all being investigated.It is technically possible to stop the spread of implant infection.

Most modern microprocessors have one or two levels of on-chip caches to make things run faster,but this is not always the case.Most of the time,these caches are made of static random access memory cells.They take up a lot of space on the chip and use a lot of electricity.A lot of the time,low power is more important than several aspects.This is true for phones and tablets.Cache memory design for single bit architecture consists of six transistors static random access memory cell,a circuit of write driver,and sense amplifiers(such as voltage differential sense amplifier,current differential sense amplifier,charge transfer differential sense amplifier,voltage latch sense amplifier,and current latch sense amplifier,all of which are compared on different resistance values in terms of a number of transistors,delay in sensing and consumption of power.The conclusion arises that single bit six transistor static random access memory cell voltage differential sense amplifier architecture consumes 11.34μW of power which shows that power is reduced up to 83%,77.75%reduction in the case of the current differential sense amplifier,39.62%in case of charge transfer differential sense amplifier and 50%in case of voltage latch sense amplifier when compared to existing latch sense amplifier architecture.Furthermore,power reduction techniques are applied over different blocks of cache memory architecture to optimize energy.The single-bit six transistors static random access memory cell with forced tack technique and voltage differential sense amplifier with dual sleep technique consumes 8.078μW of power,i.e.,reduce 28%more power that makes single bit six transistor static random access memory cell with forced tack technique and voltage differential sense amplifier with dual sleep technique more energy efficient.

Isolated duodenal perforation(IDP)in pediatric trauma is rarely reported.Since most of the children with blunt trauma are managed expectantly,timely diagnosis is imperative to avoid morbidity and mortality.We report a case of IDP and emphasize on certain specific clinical features indicating possibility of duodenal injury.We also stress upon the role of early contrast-enhanced computerized tomography(CECT)in such cases.

Clinical characteristics and management of patients with fat embolism syndrome in level I Apex Trauma Centre

Purpose: Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is systemic manifestation of fat emboli in the circulation seen mostly after long bone fractures. FES is considered a lethal complication of trauma. There are various case reports and series describing FES. Here we describe the clinical characteristics, management in ICU and outcome of these patients in level I trauma center in a span of 6 months. Methods: In this prospective study, analysis of all the patients with FES admitted in our polytrauma intensive care unit (ICU) of level I trauma center over a period of 6 months (from August 2017 to January 2018) was done. Demographic data, clinical features, management in ICU and outcome were analyzed. Results: We admitted 10 cases of FES. The mean age of patients was 31.2 years. The mean duration from time of injury to onset of symptoms was 56 h. All patients presented with hypoxemia and petechiae but central nervous system symptoms were present in 70% of patients. The mean duration of mechanical ventilation was 11.7 days and the mean length of ICU stay was 14.7 days. There was excellent recovery among patients with no neurological deficit. Conclusion: FES is considered a lethal complication of trauma but timely management can result in favorable outcome. FES can occur even after fixation of the fracture. Hypoxia is the most common and earliest feature of FES followed by CNS manifestations. Any patient presenting with such symptoms should raise the suspicion of FES and mandate early ICU referral.

Background and Aims: Lifestyle (exercise and dietary) modification is the mainstay of treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, there is paucity of data on effect of intensity of exercise in management of NAFLD, and we aimed to study the effect of variable intensities of exercise on NAFLD. Methods: The study was performed in the Department of Gastroenterology of the SCB Medical Col-lege, Cuttack and the Biju Patnaik State Police Academy, Bhu-baneswar. The subjects were police trainees [18 in a moderate intensity exercise group (MIG) and 19 in a low in-tensity exercise group (LIG)] recruited for a 6-month physical training course (261.8 Kcalorie, 3.6 metabolic equivalent in MIG and 153.6 Kcalorie, 2.1 metabolic equivalent in LIG). NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography, with exclusion of all secondary causes of steatosis. All participants were eval-uated by anthropometry (weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference), assessed for blood pressure and biochemical parameters (blood glucose, liver function test, lipid profile, serum insulin), and subjected to transabdo-minal ultrasonography before and after 6 months of physical training, and the results were compared. Results: Both the groups had similar BMI, fasting plasma glucose, AST, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, insulin, and homeostatic model as-sessment-insulin resistance (known as HOMA-IR) (p>0.05). However, subjects in the LIG were older and had lower alanine transaminase, higher triglycerides and lower high-density lip-oproteins than MIG subjects. There was a significant reduc-tion in BMI (27.0±2.1 to 26.8±2.0;p=0.001), fasting blood glucose (106.7±21.6 to 85.8±19.0;p<0.001), serum trigly-cerides (167.5±56.7 to 124.6±63.5;p=0.017), total choles-terol (216.8±29.2 to 196.7±26.6;p=0.037), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (134.6±21.4 to 130.5±21.9;p=0.010), serum aspartate transaminase (39.3±32.2 to 30.9±11.4;p<0.001), serum alanine transaminase (56.6 ±28.7 to 33.0±11.3;p<0.001) and HOMA-IR (2.63±2.66 to 1.70±2.59;p<0.001

Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients who underwent tracheostomy and its effect on outcome:A retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND The exponential rise in Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases has resulted in an increased number of patients requiring prolonged ventilatory support and subsequent tracheostomy.With the limited availability of literature regarding the outcomes of COVID-19 patients with tracheostomy,we attempted to study the clinical characteristics and multiple parameters affecting the outcomes in these patients.AIM To determine all-cause mortality following tracheostomy and its association with various risk factors in COVID-19 patients.METHODS This retrospective study included 73 adult COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU between 1 April,2020 and 30 September,2021 who underwent tracheostomy as a result of acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19.The data collected included demographics(age,sex),comorbidities,type of oxygen support at admission,severity of COVID-19,complications,and other parameters such as admission to tracheostomy,intubation to tracheostomy,ICU stay,hospital stay,and outcome.RESULTS This study included 73 adult patients with an average age of 52±16.67 years,of which 52%were men.The average time for admission to tracheostomy was 18.12±12.98 days while intubation to tracheostomy was 11.97±9 days.The mortality rate was 71.2%and 28.8%of patients were discharged alive.The mean duration of ICU and hospital stay was 25±11 days and 28.21±11.60 days,respectively.Greater age,severe COVID-19,mechanical ventilation,shock and acute kidney injury were associated with poor prognosis;however,early tracheostomy in intubated patients resulted in better outcomes.CONCLUSION Patients with severe COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation have a poor prognosis but patients with early tracheostomy may benefit with no added risk.We recommend that the timing of tracheostomy be decided on a case-by-case basis and a well-designed randomised controlled trial should be performed to elucidate the potential benefit of early tracheostomy in such patients.

Habitat heterogeneity influences avian feeding guild composition in urban landscapes:evidence from Bhubaneswar,India

Background:Habitat heterogeneity clearly distinguished in terms of availability of food and habitat resources and landscape features(natural or human-modified)play a crucial role in the avian species composition and population structure.To examine this,a study was carried out in Bhubaneswar,India,to understand the ecological niche distinction in birds based on habitat heterogeneity.Regular sampling was conducted in 30 sampling sites covering six different habitat types in a predominantly urban landscape of Bhubaneswar for understanding the ecological niche in birds.The birds were classified into 11 types of foraging guilds.Results:The insectivorous guild had the highest bird species richness(181 species)and the omnivorous guild had the lowest(11 species).The piscivorous guild and wetland habitat had the strongest linkage,followed by the insectivorous guild and agricultural land.The frugivorous guild was significantly correlated with forest habitats(r=0.386,p<0.01)and park and garden habitats(r=0.281,p<0.01).This urban area hosted a higher number of bird species in certain habitat types,viz.,agricultural lands(52%,115 species)and forest patches(50%,111 species).Conclusion:The present study highlights the importance of agricultural lands,forest patches,parks and gardens,and wetlands inside the cityscape for supporting avifauna.It is therefore suggested that such habitats should be conserved inside an urban area to protect native avifauna.Thus,the city development plan must invariably include strategies for conserving the forest patches inside the urban area.Measures must be taken to restrain the degradation of agricultural lands and reduce their utilization for non-agricultural purposes,which will help in further reducing the bird population decline in the urban landscape.

Ambient Air Quality Surveillance and Indexing in and around Mining Clusters in Western Kachchh Region, Gujarat, India

Generation of baseline information about ambient air quality of any given region assumes significance, when the area is 1) an active mine site, 2) proposed to be mined out in future, and 3) industrialization in the area is in fast pace. Ambient air quality monitoring (with respect to SPM, RPM, SO2, NOx and CO) was carried out in and around two mining complexes in western parts of Kachchh district in Gujarat to generate baseline air quality status of the area. This area has two major mine complexes and various large scale industrial projects (thermal power plants, cement plants and several ports and jetties) are also in pipeline. Ambient air sampling was carried out in eight locations within five km radial distance from two major mine sites, i.e. Panandhro and Mata-na-Madh, with four locations for each mine site. Air Quality Indexing was done for all the locations, since it is a simplest way for the prediction of ambient air quality status of any region with respect to industrial, residential and rural areas. Of the eight locations studied the air quality for six locations fell under fairly clean (Light Air Pollution, AQI 25-50) category, while the rest (rural areas in the region), had relatively better air quality and fell under clean (Clean Air, AQI 10-25) category.

Soil Properties of a Tropical Savannah in the Eastern Ghats of India

As an outcome of globalization and liberalization of economic policies, exploration for and mining of minerals have become one of the recent lucrative trades in India. Due to stringent environment legislations, reclamation and reforestation of the mined out sites have become obligatory. Information on distribution of nutrients before and after mining provides valuable insights while developing and executing the strategy for reclamation and revegetation of the mined out sites. Successful mine reclamation plan chiefly requires information on the soil characteristics in the area during its natural state. With this aim, investigations into spatial and temporal variations in soil nutrients and other physico-chemical parameters among three proposed bauxite mine locations near Araku valley, India were conducted. Soil samples were collected every three months for two years. At each location, samples from three sites in triplicates from four successive layers (0 - 5 cm, 5 - 10 cm, 10 - 15 cm and 15 - 20 cm depth) were collected. Concentrations of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Available Phosphorous (TAP), Total Available Sulphur (TAS), C:N, C:P, and C:S decreased along the soil layers, while N:P increased. All the parameters studied varied significantly among months (GLM-ANOVA, P 0.05). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) done on the soil physico-chemical dataset showed first 5 components (Eigen Value > 1) explaining 87.3% of the total variance. Of these, the first component accounted for 21.0% and the second for 20.1% of the total variance. The principal components represented C:N/Soil N, C:P/Soil P/N:P, EC, Soil S/C:S and Soil C axes, respectively.
