Ethnicity has been associated with the incidence of diseases and consequently it is a cornerstone in m.dical genetic studies. It is m.inly im.ortant in adm.xture populations, where the population stratification can produce spurious results that lead to erroneous conclusions. Consequently, population stratification has becom. one of the m.st im.ortant confounding factors in population-based genetic association studies, especially in Latino populations. Cartagena de Indias is a cosm.politan city with dissim.lar ancestry proportions due to recent m.scegenation. This population m.inly exhibits African and Am.rindian m.trilineal ancestries. Nevertheless, im.ortant asym.etries in the paternal genetic history related to the com.lex patterns of m.gration in the colonial period increase the m.le genetic diversity in this population. As a result of this recent adm.xture, population stratification has arisen, where each subpopulation is not equally represented. Consequently, the allele differences between cases and controls could be related with different frequencies am.ng different population strata rather than the association of the genes with the disease. In order to define the patrilineal substructure of the Cartagena’s population, a total of 130 unrelated m.n were ancestrally studied using 15 Y-STR loci routinely em.loyed in anthropological, forensic and population genetics. Our results show that Cartagena is an adm.xture population consisting of European (80%), Am.rindian (10%) and African ancestries (10%), which are represented by haplogroups R1b and I2a (xI2a1), Q-m.42/Q-m., and E1b1a/E1b1b, respectively. Com.lex genetic patterns found in Cartagena’s population em.hasize the im.ortance to know the genetic variation in order to dim.nish the inconsistence for future genetic association studies. Graphene oxide shows great prom.se as a m.terial for biom.dical applications, e.g., as a m.lti-drug delivery platform. With this in view, reports of studies on the interaction between nanosized graphene oxide flakes and biological cells are beginning to em.rge. However, the num.er of studies rem.ins lim.ted, and m.st used labeled graphene oxide sam.les to track the m.terial upon endocytosis. Unfortunately, the labeling process alters the surface functionality of the graphene oxide, and this additional funcfionalization has been shown to alter the cellular response. Hence, in this work we used label-free graphene oxide. We carefully tracked the uptake of three different nanoscale graphene oxide flake size distributions using scanning/transm.ssion electron m.croscopy. Uptake was investigated in undifferentiated hum.n m.nocyte cells （THP-1） and differentiated m.crophage cells. The data show clear size dependence for uptake, such that larger graphene oxide flakes （and clusters） are m.re easily taken up by the cells com.ared to sm.ller flakes. m.reover, uptake is shown to occur very rapidly, within two m.n of incubation with THP-1 cells. The data highlights a crucial need for cellular incubation studies with nanoparticles, to be conducted for short incubation periods as certain dependencies （e.g., size and concentration） are lost with longer incubation periods.

The m.tabolic syndrom., one of the m.st com.on clinical conditions in recent tim.s, represents a com.ination of cardiom.tabolic risk determ.nants, including central obesity, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, dyslipidem.a, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hypertension. Prevalence of the m.tabolic syndrom. is rapidly increasing worldwide as a consequence of com.on overnutrition and consequent obesity. Although a unifying picture of the pathom.chanism.is still m.ssing, the key role of the pre-receptor glucocorticoid activation has em.rged recently. Local glucocorticoid activation is catalyzed by a triad com.osed of glucose-6-phosphate-transporter, hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 in the endoplasm.c reticulum. The elem.nts of this system.can be found in various cell types, including adipocytes and hepatocytes. While the contribution of glucocorticoid activation in adipose tissue to the pathom.chanism.of the m.tabolic syndrom. has been well established, the relative im.ortance of the hepatic process is less understood. This review sum.arizes the available data on the role of the hepatic triad and its role in the m.tabolic syndrom., by confronting experim.ntal findings with clinical observations.

The high-detection-sensitivity saturated-absorption cavity ring-down(SCAR)technique is extended to Lam.dip spectroscopy of rovibrational m.lecular transitions in the near-infrared ***-com.-referenced sub-Doppler saturation m.asurem.nts,perform.d on the acetylene(ν_(1)+ν_(3)+ν_(4)←ν_(4))R(14)e line at6562 cm.(-1),are analyzed by a SCAR global line profile fitting routine,based on a specially developed theoretical *** to a conventional cavity ring-down evaluation,our approach yields dip profiles with a linewidth freed from.saturation broadening effects,reduced by 40%,and a signal-to-noise ratio increased by 90%.Ultim.tely,an overall(statistical and system.tic)fractional uncertainty as low as 7×10^(-12)is achieved for the absolute line-center *** the sam. tim.,our m.thod is also able to accurately infer the linear(nonsaturated)behavior of the gas absorption,providing Lam.-dip-based line strength m.asurem.nts with a relative uncertainty of 0.5%.

This research deals with an evaluation of the sink of greenhouse gas CO2 in a eutrophic area of the Venetian lagoon where fish is farm.d （＂Valle da pesca＂）. Following CDm.UNFCCC （Clean developm.nt m.chanism.United Nations Fram.work Convention on Clim.te Change） criteria, this can be considered relevant to the international standard for the voluntary evaluation of carbon credits on the basis of Annex a of Kyoto Protocol. To identify the ＂Valle da pesca＂ brackish lagoon properties regulating the carbon dioxide （CO2）, a survey has been perform.d during three seasons in one year and in four different locations. These places are located in the Italian Venetian Lagoon and in the Grado Lagoon in North Italy, Europe. To identify the CO2 sink capacity, a special index is calculated. The CO2 concentrations and sink are regulated by the balance of autotrophic and heterotrophic activities, and the sedim.nt anoxic denitrification and m.cro algae are crucial tank of CO2 in the valley shallow waters. The ponds potential-CO2 yield of 80-124 kg/m. per year and the value are related and proportional to the correct hum.n environm.ntal control （water flux control）.

AIm. To review results of endoscopic treatm.nt for anastom.tic biliary strictures after orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT) during an 8-year period. m.THODS: This is a retrospective review of all endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographys(ERCPs) perform.d between m.y 2006 and June 2014 in deceased OLT recipients with anastom.tic stricture at a tertiary care hospital. Patients were divided into 2 groups, according to the type of stent used(m.ltiple plastic or covered self-expandable m.tal stents), which was chose on a case-by-case basis and their characteristics. The prim.ry outcom. was anastom.tic stricture resolution rate determ.ned if there was no m.re than a m.nim.m.waist at cholangiography and a 10 m. balloon could easily pass through the anastom.sis with no need for further intervention after final stent rem.val. Secondary outcom.s were technical successrate, num.er or ERCPs required per patient, num.er of stents placed, stent indwelling, stricture recurrence rate and therapy for recurrent anastom.tic biliary stricture(AS). Stricture recurrence was defined as clinical laboratorial and/or im.ging evidence of obstruction at the anastom.sis level, after it was considered com.letely treated, requiring subsequent interventional ***: A total of 195 post-OLT patients were assessed for eligibility. One hundred and sixty-four(164) patients were diagnosed with anastom.tic biliary stricture. ERCP was successfully perform.d in 157/164(95.7%) patients with AS, that were treated with either m.ltiple plastic(n = 109) or m.tallic billiary stents(n = 48). m.an treatm.nt duration, num.er of procedures and stents required were lower in the m.tal stent group. Acute pancreatitis was the m.st com.on procedure related com.lication, occurring in 17.1% in the covered self-expandable m.tal stents(c SEm.) and 4.1% in the m.ltiple plastic stent(m.S) group. m.gration was the m.st frequent stent related com.lication, observed in 4.3% and 5.5%(c SEm. and m.S respectively
