Joint effect among p53, CYP1A1, GSTM1 polymorphism combinations and smoking on prostate cancer risk： an exploratory genotype-environment interaction study

Aim： To assess the role of several genetic factors in combination with an environmental factor as modulators of prostate cancer risk. We focus on allele variants of low-penetrance genes associated with cell control, the detoxification processes and smoking. Methods： In a case-control study we compared people carrying p53cd72 Pro allele, CYP1A1 M1 allele and GSTM1 null genotypes with their prostate cancer risk. Results： The joint risk for smokers carrying Pro^＊ and MI^＊, Pro^＊ and GSTM1null or GSTM1 null and CYP1A1 MI^＊ variants was significantly higher （odds ratio [OR]： 13.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]： 2.41-71.36; OR： 3.97, 95% CI： 1.13-13.95 and OR： 6.87, 95% CI： 1.68-27.97, respectively） compared with that for the reference group, and for non-smokers was not significant. OR for combinations among p53cd72, GSTM1 and CYP1A1 M1 in smokers were positively and significantly associated with prostate cancer risk compared with non-smokers and compared with the putative lowest risk group （OR： 8.87, 95% CI： 1.25-62.71）. Conclusion： Our results suggest that a combination of p53cd72, CYP1A1, GSTM1 alleles and smoking plays a significant role in modified prostate cancer risk on the study population, which means that smokers carrying susceptible genotypes might have a significantly higher risk than those carrying non-susceptible genotypes.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Overweight and Obesity among University Students of the Health Field in San Luis PotosíMéxico

The aim for this research is to determine the association between the risk factors and prevalence of overweight and obesity in students in the health field in the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP in Spanish). A quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted from May to November 2012. By stratified random sampling, 290 students in the health field were selected. Questionnaire was used to identify factors associated with obesity. The obesity and overweight prevalence was determined, calculating body mass index through anthropometric measurement. The strength of the association between variables was measured using Chi squared and odds ratio tests. The proportion of students with overweight or obesity was 28.3% and was higher in men (36.8%) than in women (24.6%), with statistical significance (p < 0.01). Greater obesity or overweight was identified in psychology students (p < 0.01) and in those who reported an average appetite (79.3%) (p < 0.05). In total, 66.6% of the students decreased their physical activity upon joining the university, which was a factor significantly associated with obesity and overweight (p < 0.05). The findings show that the school environment can be a conditioning factor for the development of obesity and overweight in students. Implementation of a program is recommended to prevent and control such problems.

Elderly Feeding and Nutrition during Hospitalization: An Integrative Review

Objective: to search in the current literature the elements that exert an influence on feeding and nutrition in hospitalized aged people. Method: the following strategies were used for the integrative review stages: research question (Population or Patients;Exposure;Outcomes);analysis flowchart (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses);and levels of evidence corresponding to the studies (Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine). The searches were conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Embase, CINAHL and Scopus databases. Results: the initial search yielded 1808 studies, of which 34 comprised the analysis corpus after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The assessments corresponding to nutritional status and to the risk factors for hospitalized aged people are fundamental in defining the diet. An association was found between inadequate energy intake, lack of appetite, infections, malignity, delirium and need for assistance in feeding. Dysphagia affected nutritional status and was associated with multimorbidities, cognitive impairment, malnutrition, higher dependence for the activities of daily living, and greater care need. Nutritional support improved the perioperative nutritional status, in addition to reducing the hospitalization times and the number of infectious complications. Conclusion: the main disorder that hinders meeting the nutritional needs is dysphagia, and is associated with aged people’s multimorbidity and dependence. The results provide geriatric and gerontological knowledge about elderly nutrition, in addition to targeting preventive and intervention treatments and care during hospitalization. .

Ketamine anesthesia reduces intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats

AIM: To investigate the effects of ketamine anesthesia on the motility alterations and tissue injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion in rats. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Ischemia was induced by ob-structing blood flow in 25% of the total small intesti-nal length (ileum) with a vascular clamp for 45 min, after which either 60 min or 24 h of reperfusion was allowed. Rats were either anesthetized with pento-barbital sodium (50 mg/kg) or ketamine (100 mg/kg). Control groups received sham surgery. After 60 min of reperfusion, the intestine was examined for mor-phological alterations, and after 24 h intestinal basic electrical rhythm (BER) frequency was calculated, and intestinal transit determined in all groups. RESULTS: The intestinal mucosa in rats that were anesthetized with ketamine showed moderate altera-tions such as epithelial lifting, while ulceration and hemorrhage was observed in rats that received pento-barbital sodium after 60 min of reperfusion. Quantita-tive analysis of structural damage using the Chiu scaleshowed significantly less injury in rats that received ketamine than in rats that did not (2.35 ± 1.14 vs 4.58 ± 0.50, P < 0.0001). The distance traveled by a mark-er, expressed as percentage of total intestinal length, in rats that received pentobarbital sodium was 20% ± 2% in comparison with 25.9% ± 1.64% in rats that re-ceived ketamine (P = 0.017). BER was not statistically different between groups. CONCLUSION: Our results show that ketamine anesthesia is associated with diminished intestinal injury and abolishes the intestinal transit delay induced by ischemia/reperfusion.

Luminescence Characteristics of LaAlO<sub>3</sub>:Eu<sup>3+</sup>Obtained by Modified Pechini’s Method

The aim of the present work was to investigate the luminescent properties of europium-doped lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3) powder prepared by Modified Pechini (MP) method. Samples were prepared at different Eu3+ concentrations and calcined at 1600°C. Structural and morphology characterizations were obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Luminescent properties were analyzed by photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescent phenomena. The XRD pattern shows pure lanthanum aluminate oxide LaAlO3 with a rhombohedral structure. Photoluminescence studies of the powders was related to 4f → 4f(5D0 → 7Fi) (i = 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions of Eu3+ ion, the most intense emission of Eu3+ in LaAlO3 was registered for the transition 5D0 → 7F1, for 5% of Eu3+. The recorded TL glow curves of excited samples showed a main TL peak, the main peak appeared its maximum as a function of excitation energy. The investigation demonstrates that polycrystalline LaAlO3:Eu3+ powders calcined at 1600°C have interesting luminescent characteristics.

Inclusion Levels of Fermented Apple Bagasse on in Vitro Rumen Fermentation of Alfalfa Hay

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of inclusion of fermented apple bagasse （FAB） obtained through solid state fermentation on pH, ammonia nitrogen （N-NH3）, volatile fatty acids （VFA） content, in vitro dry matter digestibility （IVDMD）, lactic acid and microbial counting of alfalfa hay under in vitro rumen environment; four levels of FAB were evaluated （0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0. 75 g/dry matter of FAB） replacing 1.5 g dry matter （DM） of alfalfa hay and incubated at different fermentation times （0, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h） using a complete random design with repeated measures on time. Counts of live yeast colonies （6.08, 6.33, 6.24 and 6.51 CFU/mL expressed as log 10） was higher when FAB was included in the different levels up to the 12 h of fermentation （P 〈 0.0001）; lactic acid content also increased as FAB was included in the different levels （10.61, 13.86, 16.84 and 14.57μg/mL） up to the 12 h of incubation （P 〈 0.001）. Nevertheless, the other variables measured as pH, N-NH3, VFA, IVDMD, total bacteria and fungi counts, were not affected by the treatments. It is concluded that substitution of FAB by alfalfa hay in an in vitro rumen ecosystem positively modified live yeast colonies and lactic acid concentration, without effect on the other fermentative and microbial parameters of the in vitro rumen environment, but considering mixes of FAB and alfalfa hay as a quality ingredient for the feeding of ruminants.

Relationship of Polymorphisms of Glutathione S-Transferase GSTT1 and GSTM1 With the Response to Chemotherapy In Mexican Women with Advanced Breast Cancer

Introduction: Breast cancer is a common disease diagnosed in Mexican women and the first leading cause of death [1]. Heterogeneity in patients’ response to treatment is consistently observed across populations. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are involved in the metabolism of environmental carcinogens, reactive oxygen species and chemotherapeutic agents by catalyzing the glutathione with electrophilic compounds. The deletion of GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes result in loss of enzyme activity. A few studies evaluated the response to treatment and the polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1. The aim of this work is to make the association of the null polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1 with the response to chemotherapy basically doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. Methods: The genotyping of thirty patients with breast cancer was made with the Polymerase chain reaction, to identify the polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1. We determine the status of Her-2 neu, estrogen and progesterone receptors, then the response to treatment was made with an ultrasound and pathological data. We made the association with the χi2 statistics using a p≤0.05. Results: Using the Sigma Stat 3.5 program and the chi-squared analysis, we do not observe a significant association with the GSTT1+/GSTM1+, GSTT1-/GSTM1+ and GSTT1-/GSTM1-polymorphisms and the better or worse response to cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin. With the Her-2 neu, estrogen and progesterone receptors status, we neither found an association with the response to the therapy. Conclusion: This study suggests that GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms have no statistical significance between the genotype of women with advanced breast cancer and the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, but we can see a clear tendency toward better response with the null genotype.
