The finding that adult neurogenesis occurs constitutively in the brain was a breakthrough in neuroscience and soon gained attention as a possible mechanism for neurorepair after brain damage. In a recent study we show that the dentate gyrus （DG） reorganizes anatomically over neurons undergo maturation time after damage, while new and activate in response to a contextual fear memory recall （Aguilar-Arredondo and zepeda, 2018）. These findings provide new evidence on the possible role of neurogenesis in cognitive recovery after brain injury.

The parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)in the negative half-cell of vanadium redox flow batteries(VRFBs)causes severe efficiency losses.Thus,a deeper understanding of this process and the accompanying bubble formation is crucial.This benchmarking study locally analyzes the bubble distribution in thick,porous electrodes for the first time using deep learning-based image segmentation of synchrotron X-ray micro-tomograms.Each large three-dimensional data set was processed precisely in less than one minute while minimizing human errors and pointing out areas of increased HER activity in VRFBs.The study systematically varies the electrode potential and material,concluding that more negative electrode potentials of-200 m V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)and lower cause more substantial bubble formation,resulting in bubble fractions of around 15%–20%in carbon felt electrodes.Contrarily,the bubble fractions stay only around 2%in an electrode combining carbon felt and carbon paper.The detected areas with high HER activity,such as the border subregion with more than 30%bubble fraction in carbon felt electrodes,the cutting edges,and preferential spots in the electrode bulk,are potential-independent and suggest that larger electrodes with a higher bulk-to-border ratio might reduce HER-related performance losses.The described combination of electrochemical measurements,local X-ray microtomography,AI-based segmentation,and 3D morphometric analysis is a powerful and novel approach for local bubble analysis in three-dimensional porous electrodes,providing an essential toolkit for a broad community working on bubble-generating electrochemical systems.

This study investigates the influence of electropolymerization conditions on the deposition of polypyrrole(PPy)onto cotton-derived carbon fiber(CF)modified with reduced graphene oxide(rGO)for supercapacitors applications using an experimental/theorical approach.The surface modification of CF by rGO and/or by PPy electrodeposited at 10,25 and 50 mV s^(-1) was thoroughly examined physicochemical and electrochemically.Composite electrodes comprising CF-rGo-PPy,synthesized via electropolymerization at 25 mV s^(-1),demonstrated a remarkable increase in capacitance,showcasing~742 F g^(-1) compared to 153 F g^(-1) for CF.SEM,N_(2)-surface area,XPS,and TD-DFT approach revealed that the higher capacitance observed in CF-rGo-PPy electrodes underscores the influence of morphology and charged nitrogen species on the electrochemical performance of these modified electrodes.Notably,this electrode material achieves a specific capacitance retention of~96%of their initial capacitance after 10000 cycles at 0.5 A g^(-1) measured in a two-electrodes cell configuration.This work also discusses the influence of the scan rate used for pyrrole electropolymerization on the pseudocapacitance contribution of PPy and its possible effect on the porosity of the material.These results highlight the importance of appropriate electropolymerization conditions that allow obtaining the synergistic effect between CF,rGO and PPy.

BACKGROUND Biliary atresia(BA)is the most common indication for pediatric liver transplantation,although portoenterostomy is usually performed first.However,due to the high failure rate of portoenterostomy,liver transplantation has been advocated as the primary procedure for patients with BA.It is still unclear if a previous portoenterostomy has a negative impact on liver transplantation outcomes.AIM To investigate the effect of prior portoenterostomy in infants un-dergoing liver transplantation for BA.METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of 42 pediatric patients with BA who underwent primary liver transplantation from 2013 to 2023 at a single tertiary center in Brazil.Patients with BA were divided into two groups:Those undergoing primary liver transplantation without portoenterostomy and those undergoing liver transplantation with prior portoenterostomy.Continuous variables were compared using the Student’s t-test or the Kruskal-Wallis test,and categorical variables were compared using theχ2 or Fisher’s exact test,as appropriate.Multivariable Cox regression analysis was performed to determine risk factors for portal vein thrombosis.Patient and graft survival analyses were conducted with the Kaplan–Meier product-limit estimator,and patient subgroups were compared using the two-sided log-rank test.RESULTS Forty-two patients were included in the study(25[60%]girls),23 undergoing liver transplantation without prior portoenterostomy,and 19 undergoing liver transplantation with prior portoenterostomy.Patients with prior portoenterostomy were older(12 vs 8 months;P=0.02)at the time of liver transplantation and had lower Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease scores(13.2 vs 21.4;P=0.01).The majority of the patients(35/42,83%)underwent livingdonor liver transplantation.The group of patients without prior portoenterostomy appeared to have a higher incidence of portal vein thrombosis(39 vs 11%),but this result did not reach statistical significance.Prior portoenterostomy was not a protective factor against portal vein

Cereal crops are significant contributors to global diets.As climate change disrupts weather patterns and wreaks havoc on crops,the need for generating stress-resilient,high-yielding varieties is more urgent than ever.One extremely promising avenue in this regard is to exploit the tremendous genetic diversity expressed by the wild ancestors of current day crop species.These crop wild relatives thrive in a range of environments and accordingly often harbor an array of traits that allow them to do so.The identification and introgression of these traits into our staple cereal crops can lessen yield losses in stressful environments.In the last decades,a surge in extreme drought and flooding events have severely impacted cereal crop production.Climate models predict a persistence of this trend,thus reinforcing the need for research on water stress resilience.Here we review:(i)how water stress(drought and flooding)impacts crop performance;and(ii)how identification of tolerance traits and mechanisms from wild relatives of the main cereal crops,that is,rice,maize,wheat,and barley,can lead to improved survival and sustained yields in these crops under water stress conditions.

Why neurogenesis is attenuated in elderly individuals is an intriguing question that has raised renewed interest.Mechanisms associated with declined neurogenesis in the aged brain have been attributed to inflammatory cytokines[1].More recently,a specific role for interferon-y(IFN-y)produced by CD8-expressing cytotoxic T cells has been implicated[2].These observations suggest a scenario in which neurogenesis,at least in part,is regulated by immune cells within the aging brain.This raises several interesting questions with regards to the characteristics of specific immune cells within the brain,the signals for their expansion and maintenance,and their role in affecting neurogenesis and cognition during normal brain aging.

The shortage of deceased donor organs has prompted the development of alternative liver grafts for transplantation.Living-donor liver transplantation(LDLT)has emerged as a viable option,expanding the donor pool and enabling timely transplantation with favorable graft function and improved long-term outcomes.An accurate evaluation of the donor liver’s volumetry(LV)and anatomical study is crucial to ensure adequate future liver remnant,graft volume and precise liver resection.Thus,ensuring donor safety and an appropriate graftto-recipient weight ratio.Manual LV(MLV)using computed tomography has traditionally been considered the gold standard for assessing liver volume.However,the method has been limited by cost,subjectivity,and variability.Automated LV techniques employing advanced segmentation algorithms offer improved reproducibility,reduced variability,and enhanced efficiency compared to manual measurements.However,the accuracy of automated LV requires further investigation.The study provides a comprehensive review of traditional and emerging LV methods,including semi-automated image processing,automated LV techniques,and machine learning-based approaches.Additionally,the study discusses the respective strengths and weaknesses of each of the aforementioned techniques.The use of artificial intelligence(AI)technologies,including machine learning and deep learning,is expected to become a routine part of surgical planning in the near future.The implementation of AI is expected to enable faster and more accurate image study interpretations,improve workflow efficiency,and enhance the safety,speed,and cost-effectiveness of the procedures.Accurate preoperative assessment of the liver plays a crucial role in ensuring safe donor selection and improved outcomes in LDLT.MLV has inherent limitations that have led to the adoption of semi-automated and automated software solutions.Moreover,AI has tremendous potential for LV and segmentation;however,its widespread use is hindered by cost and availability.Therefore,the integrati

Renewable energies have a high impact on power energy production and reduction of environmental pollution worldwide,so high efforts have been made to improve renewable technologies and research about them.This paper presents the thermal performance results obtained by simulation and experimental tests of a parabolic trough collector with central receiver coupled to Fresnel lens,under different configurations on the pipe.The simulation method was computational fluid dynamics(CFD)analysis in SolidWorks(R)soft-ware tool,which works with Naiver-Stokes equations to converge on a solution.Experimental tests were formed with all configurations proposed and three observations for each one,a total of 12 observations were performed in all research.As a result,the best thermal performance in simulation was achieved with the Fresnel lens and black pipe collector,with a maximum temperature of 116℃under 1000 W/m^2 radiation,the same system achieved in experimental tests a maximum temperature of 96℃with a radiation of 983 W/m^2.

Litsea glaucescens Kunth(Mexican bay leaf,laurel)has a wide distribution in Mexico,growing at both riparian and rupicolous environments in the mountainous region of the Central Highlands of the country.Sierra Fría-Sierra Laurel is a protected natural area covered by a dry forest.The Mexican bay leaf is associated with the oak forest,especially on ravines.The species has been considered at risk in recent years.This research is focused on analyzing the elements of the environment of the ravines,which are influencing the distribution and establishment of laurel populations in the region.Two mountainous regions of Aguascalientes were selected,Sierra Fría and Sierra Laurel.Three ravines of the basin were selected to obtain environmental data.Variables registered were topographic,edaphic,and biotic.Principal component analysis was used to identify ecological factors associated with the presence of L.glaucescens.Mexican bay leaf populations were registered in 10 ravines.At the structural level in the community,29 woody species were registered,Mexican bay leaf had an Importance Value Index of 15.8,ranking 10th among all species.Individuals of laurel were classified by size classes(S,individuals with heights ranging from 0 to 20 cm;S,heights ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 m;S,heights between 1 and 2 m with light trace of flowering;S,heights greater than 2 m with flowering greater than 30% of the canopy;and S,individuals with heights greater than 5 m,curved trunk and basal regrowth)to obtain the population structure.The importance index value for all the species in the riparian community was calculated to the community level.Edaphic factors that characterized the presence of Mexican bay leaf were a high percentage of rock coverage(90%),less mulch depth,and sandy loam shallow soils.Sites that showed higher cation exchange capacity had a higher presence of individuals of the S,S,and Ssize classes.Class Sindividuals were found in shady places with 97% of intercepted light.Individuals of classes Sand Sendure less shady places(75%–85%
