Bacterial endosymbionts of sap-sucking insects provide their host with a num- ber of beneficial qualities,including the supply of nutrition,defense against parasitoids, and protection from heat *** to these bacterial associates can therefore have a negative impact on the fitness of their insect *** evaluated observational and experi- mental factors regarding the normative hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand) (Hemiptera:Adelgidae)to help understand the roles of its three recently identified symbionts,including under heat stress *** prevalence of ***'s facultafive symbiont (Serratia symbiotica)was examined at different spatial scales to determine how variable infection rates are for this *** was no significant difference found in infection rates between adelgids on a tree,within a plot,or within a ***, significantly more adelgids in Georgia (95%)had *** compared to those in New York (68%).microsatellite genotyping of the adelgids found that this difference was most likely not the result of a second introduction *** into eastern North *** *** proportions between first and fourth instars showed that symbiont absence did not affect the ability *** to survive *** of sym- biont densities within each adelgid found that when *** was absent,the density of obligate symbionts was significantly *** to heat stress (32.5℃)was not consistently correlated with changes in symbiont densities over a 4-d ***,we have shown that symbiont prevalence and densities vary within the broad population of *** in eastern North America,with potentially significant effects upon the ecology of this important pest.

Do Not Resuscitate status as an independent risk factor for patients undergoing surgery for hip fracture

AIm To determine morbidity and mortality in this specific patient group and also to assess for any independent associations between Do Not Resuscitate(DNR) status and increased post-operative morbidity and *** We conducted a propensity score matched retrospective analysis using de-identified data from the American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Project(ACS NSQIP) for all patients undergoing hip fracture surgery over a 7 year period in hospitals across the United States enrolled in ACS NSQIP with and without Do Not Resuscitate Status. We measured patient demographics including DNR status, co-morbidities, frailty and functional baseline, surgical and anaestheticprocedure data, post-operative morbidity/complications, length of stay, discharge destination and *** Of 9218 patients meeting the inclusion criteria, 13.6% had a DNR status, 86.4% did not. mortality was higher in the DNR status compared to the non-DNR group, at 15.3% vs 8.1% and propensity score matched multivariable analysis demonstrated that DNR status was independently associated with mortality(OR = 2.04, 95%CI: 1.46-2.86, P matched cohort demonstrated that DNR status was associated with a significant, but very small increased likelihood of post-operative complications(0.53 vs 0.43 complications per episode; OR = 1.21; 95%CI: 1.04-1.41, P = 0.004). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and unplanned reintubation were significantly less likely in patients with DNR *** Whilst DNR status patients had higher rates of postoperative complications and mortality, DNR status itself was not otherwise associated with increased morbidity. DNR status appears to increase 30-d mortality via ceilings of care in keeping with a DNR status, including withholding reintubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Predictors of sperm recovery after cryopreservation n testicular cancer

Our objective was to identify predictors of improved postthaw semen quality in men with testicular cancer banking sperm for fertility preservation. We reviewed 173 individual semen samples provided by 67 men with testicular germ cell tumor （TGCT） who cryopreserved sperm before gonadotoxic treatment between 1994 and 2010 at our tertiary university medical center. Our main outcomes measures were independent predictors for the greater postthaw total motile count （TmC） in men with TGCT. men with NSGCT were more likely to be younger （P 〈 0.01） and had high cancer stage （Ⅱ or Ⅲ, P 〈 0.01） compared with men with seminoma. In our multiple regression model, NSGCT histology, use of density gradient purification, and fresh TmC 〉 median fresh TmC each had increased odds of a postthaw TmC greater than median postthaw TmC. Interestingly, age, advanced cancer stage （11 or III）, rapid freezing protocol, and motility enhancer did not show increased odds of improved postthaw TmC in our models. In conclusion, men with TGCT or poor fresh TmC should consider preserving additional vials （at least 15 vials） before oncologic treatment. Density gradient purification should be routinely used to optimize postthaw TmC in men with TGCT. Larger, randomized studies evaluating cancer stage and various cryopreservation techniques are needed to assist in counseling men with TGCT regarding fertility preservation and optimizing cryosurvival.

mETA-R(multi-environment trial analysis in R)is a suite of R scripts linked by a graphical user interface(GUI)designed in Java *** objective of mETA-R is to accurately analyze multi-environment plant breeding trials(mETs)by fitting mixed and fixed linear models from experimental designs such as the randomized complete block design(RCBD)and the alpha-lattice/lattice ***-R simultaneously estimates the best linear and unbiased estimators(BLUEs)and the best linear and unbiased predictors(BLUPs).Additionally,it computes the variance-covariance parameters,as well as some statistical and genetic parameters such as the least significant difference(LSD)at 5%significance,the coefficient of variation in percentage(CV),the genetic variance,and the broad-sense *** parameters are very important in the selection of top performing genotypes in plant ***-R also computes the phenotypic and genetic correlations among environments and between traits,as well as their statistical *** genetic correlations between environments or traits can be visualized in a biplot graph or a tree diagram(dendrogram).Genetic correlations are very important for identifying environments with similar behavior or making indirect selection and identifying the most highly associated ***-R performs multi-environment analyses by using the residual maximum likelihood(REmL)method;these analyses can be done by environment,across environments by grouping factors(stress conditions,nitrogen content,etc.)and across environments;the analyses across environments can be done with a pre-defined degree of heritability.

Human Spermicidal Activity of Passiflora edulis Extract

Objective To evaluate the spermicidal activity of Passiflora edulis extract on human spermatozoa. methods Human spermatozoa were incubated with P. edulis extracts and their motility and viability were evaluated; additionally, the cytotoxic effect of the extracts was evaluated by the tetrazolium bromide （mTT） reduction assay. Results The motility and viability were decreased immediately after treatment with a 21% dilution of the supernatant of the extract of P. edulis （P〈0.01）. No cytatoxic effect of the extracts studied was found on proliferation of mDBK and VERO cells. Conclusion These results may open the way for the use of P. edulis as a spermicidal product with less adverse effects.

Snow damages on trees of an uneven age in mixed broadleaf forests:effects of topographical conditions and tree characteristics

Snow damage on natural stands is an important problem concerning mountainous forest *** the present research,the frequency and intensity of heavy snow damage on natural stands and the relationship of damages with characteristics of trees,stand and topography were studied in mountainous forests of northern Iran.A systematic sampling design was applied to the study area(140 ha),with 122 circular *** grid dimension was100 m and each plot area was 1000 m^*** four types of snow damage to trees include:crown damage(8.6%),stem breakage(5.4%),uprooting(3.2%),and bending(1.4%).The frequency of crown damage grew with an increase inthe diameter at breast height(DBH),while the frequency of stem breakage,uprooting and bending decreased with an increase the *** frequency of crown damage,stem breakage,and total damages was related to tree species(pmount of damage grew with increasing elevation and slope angle and decreased with increasing soil *** trees(DBHm)were more susceptible to snow damage than other *** damage decreased by as the trees in the stand became more mixed in *** susceptibility of trees to snow damage increased by height and slenderness *** adequate silvicultural operation,snow damage can be reduced to a minimum level in these natural forests.

Effects of oncological treatments on semen quality in patients with testicular neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disorders

Pretherapy sperm cryopreservation in young men is currently included in good clinical practice guidelines for cancer patients. The aim of this paper is to outline the effects of different oncological treatments on semen quality in patients with testicular neoplasia or lymphoprol iferative disorders, based on an 8-year experience of the Cryopreservation Centre of a large public hospital. Two hundred and sixty-one patients with testicular neoplasia and 219 patients with lymphoproliferative disorders who underwent chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and pretherapy semen cryopreservation were evaluated. Sperm and hormonal parameters （follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, luteinizing hormone （LH）, testosterone, inhibin B levels） were assessed prior to and 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months after the end of cancer treatment. At the time of sperm collection, baseline FSH level and sperm concentration were impaired to a greater extent in patients with malignant testicular neoplasias than in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. Toxic effects on spermatogenesis were still evident at 6 and 12 months after the end of cancer therapies, while an improvement of seminal parameters was observed after 18 months. In conclusion, an overall increase in sperm concentration was recorded about 18 months after the end of cancer treatments in the majority of patients, even if it was not possible to predict the evolution of each single case ＇a priori＇. For this reason, pretherapy semen cryopreservation should be considered in all young cancer patients.

The surface chemistry of colloidal cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals is decisive in determining the stability and the final morphology of this class of materials,characterized by ionic structure and a high defect tolerance ***,the high sensitivity of purified colloidal nanocubes of CsPbBr3 to diverse environmental condition (solvent dilution,ageing,ligands post synthetic treatment) in ambient atmosphere is investigated by means of a comprehensive morphological (electron microscopy),structural (θ/2θ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and grazing incidence wide angle scattering (GIWAXS)),and spectroscopic chemical (1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NmR),nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY),absorption and emission spectroscopy) *** aging and solvent dilution contribute to modify the nanocrystal morphology,due to a modification of the ligand ***,we establish the ability of aliphatic carboxylic acids and aikyl amines ligands to induce,even in a post preparative process at room temperature,structural,morphological and spectroscopic *** post synthesis alkyl amine addition,in particular of oleyl amine and octyl amine,the highly green emitting CsPbBr3 nanocubes effectively tum into one-dimensional (1 D) thin tetragonal nanowires or lead halide deficient rhombohedral zero-dimensional (0D) Cs4PbBr6 structures with a complete loss of *** addition of an alkyl carboxylic acid,as oleic and nonanoic acid,produces the transformation of nanocubes into still emitting orthorombic two-dimensional (2D) *** acid/base equilibrium between the native and added ligands,the edsorbed/free ligands dynamic in solution and the ligand solubility in non-polar solvent contribute to render CsPbBr3 particularly sensitive to environmental and processing conditions and,therefore prone to undergo to structural,morphological and,hence spectroscopic,transformations.
