Zoologists rely on mechanistic niche models of behavioral thermoregulation to understand how animals respond to climate *** models predict that species will need to disperse to higher altitudes to persist in a warmer ***,thermal stress and,thus,thermoregulatory behavior may depend on atmospheric oxygen as well as environmental *** hypoxia causes animals to prefer lower body temperatures,which could be interpreted as evidence that oxygen supply limits heat *** a constraint could prevent animals from successfully dispersing to high elevations during climate ***,an effect of oxygen supply on preferred body temperature has only been observed when oxygen concentrations fall far below levels experienced in *** see whether animals perceive greater thermal stress at an ecologically relevant level of hypoxia,we studied the thermoregulatory behavior of lizards(Sceloporus tristichus)exposed to oxygen concentrations of 13%and 21%(equivalent to PO2 at 4000 m and 0 m,respectively).In addition,we exposed lizards to 29%oxygen to see whether they would accept a higher body temperature at hyperoxia than at *** each oxygen level,we measured a behavioral response to heat stress known as the voluntary thermal maximum:the temperature at which a warming animal sought a cool *** concentration had no discernable effect on the voluntary thermal maximum,suggesting that lizards experience thermal stress similarly at all 3 levels of oxygen(13%,12%and 29%).Future research should focus on thermoregulatory behaviors under ecologically relevant levels of hypoxia.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation represents an emerging cause of liver disease in patients undergoing treatment with biologic agents. In particular, the risk ofHBV reactivation is heightened by the use monoclonalantibodies, such as rituximab (anti-CD20) and alemtuzumab (anti-CD52) that cause profound and longlasting immunosuppression. Emerging data indicatethat HBV reactivation could also develop following theuse of other biologic agents, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors. When HBV reactivation is di-agnosed, it is mandatory to suspend biologic treatmentand start antiviral agents immediately. However, preemptive antiviral therapy prior to monoclonal antibodyadministration is crucial in preventing HBV reactivationand its clinical consequences. Several lines of evidencehave shown that risk of HBV reactivation is greatlyreduced by the identifi cation of high-risk patients andthe use of prophylactic antiviral therapy. In this article, we discuss current trends in the management of HBV reactivation in immunosuppressed patients receiving biologic therapy, such as rituximab, alemtuzumab and TNF-α antagonists.

Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities have emerged as a new platform to increase light-matter interaction capable to enhance the Purcell factor in a singular way not attainable with either photonic or plasmonic cavities *** the hybrid cavities proposed so far,the plasmonic element is usually a metallic bow-tie antenna,so the plasmonic gap—defined by lithography-is limited to minimum values of several ***-on-a-mirror(NPom)cavities are far superior to achieve the smallest possible mode volumes,as plasmonic gaps smaller than 1 nm can be ***,we design a hybrid cavity that combines an NPom plasmonic cavity and a dielectric-nanobeam photonic crystal cavity operating at transverse-magnetic *** metallic nanoparticle can be placed very close(m)to the upper surface of the dielectric cavity,which acts as a low-reflectivity *** demonstrate through numerical calculations of the local density of states that this hybrid plasmonic-photonic cavity exhibits quality factors𝑄above 10^(3) and normalized mode volumes𝑉down to 10^(−3),thus resulting in high Purcell factors(F_(P)≈10^(5)),while being experimentally feasible with current *** results suggest that hybrid cavities with sub-nanometer gaps should open new avenues for boosting light-matter interaction in nanophotonic systems.

Recently,the Andean subparamo in Colombia has experienced severe wildfires,but little is known about the functional composition of recovering or not after a ***,we examined the functional community composition subparamo affected byfire in *** documented how functional traits changed 31 months after the disturbance and compared them with an unburned *** sampled from one to two years after the fire every four months,then registered all recruits in 1655m *** individuals were classified into strategy functional groups based on the traits of persistence and *** first group was stem type and regeneration mechanism(seedling and resprout),and the second was fruit type and dispersal *** investigated the degree to which functional diversity changes plant communities over time(woody and non-woody),and we compared it with an unburned *** most relevant results showed that resprouts and seed regenerated increased post-fire time and significant differences between sampling *** anemochory is the most relevant dispersal mode that indicates the community capacity to colonize the new gaps opened by the fire *** discuss how wildfire appears to be a triggering factor for persistence and dispersal strategy groups in subparamo burned given their characteristics of tolerance to *** this reason,a greater functional divergence between the ecosystems studied post-fire recovery has been related to higher levels of biodiversity at the landscape scale due to the high degree of endemism and significant differences in species composition between paramos.

Aims How growth of wild and crop species responds to global environmental perturbations has both ecological and agricultural significance in a changing *** primary aim of this synthesis was to quantitatively assess the interactive effects of intraspecific competition and elevated CO_(2) on biomass production in herbaceous *** Using meta-analytical techniques,we synthesized data from publications before 2006 that reported biomass responses to elevated CO_(2) in 321 herbaceous species grown in isolation or in competition with con-specific *** findings Intraspecific competition differentially modified biomass responses to elevated CO_(2) in wild and crop *** example,competition reduced CO_(2) stimulation of total biomass(WT)from 27 to 23%in wild species,but by a much greater magnitude,i.e.,from 43 to 32%in *** had no effect on responses of either above-(WAG)or below-ground(WBG)biomass to elevated CO_(2) in wild species,but significantly diminished CO_(2) enhancement of WAG,although not of WBG,in *** variations were found among functional groups in the modification of growth responses to elevated CO_(2) by intraspecific competition,which exerted greater depression on CO_(2) enhancement in C3 than in C4 species and in non-legumes than in *** CO_(2) affected leaf and stem growth of individually grown C3 graminoids and forbs similarly,but increased leaf growth only in C4 graminoids and stem growth only in C4 *** from this synthesis demonstrated that intraspecific competition differentially affected growth responses to elevated CO_(2) in wild and crop *** wildcrop species differences will have important implications for understanding primary production by herbaceous species in both natural and agricultural ecosystems in the future when atmospheric CO_(2) is significantly higher than the current level.

Feeding dysfunction is a frequent presenting symptom of eosinophilic esophagitis(EoE). Here we present 3 children of various ages whose manifestations of EoE associated feeding dysfunction led to significant and life altering impact on their growth and development. Early identification of presenting symptoms of EoE will allow for prompt diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatments. Recognition of salient features of dysfunction and treatment by feeding therapists and nutritionists led to symptom resolution and growth.

The sulfurous water deposit exploitation in volcanic, swamp, or wetland regions, represents an alternative option for potable water supply in cities and communities around the world. However, before its consumption, it must be treated by the application of physicochemical or biological methods with the ability to separate high contents in sulfates, hydrogen sulphite and sulphides which have laxative, allergic and toxic properties in humans. Conventional methods require the supply of chemical compounds or the adequate control of different parameters such as pH, temperature, etc., and the constant maintenance within their reactors. For these reasons, the systems could have elevated operating costs and require additional steps to enable the treatment of its separated products and the final disposal of its residual waste generated. In this research, compound parabolic collectors are implemented for the use of solar energy radiation, UV-B type, in Solar Advanced Oxidation Processes in H2O2/O3/UVsolar homogeneous phase. Its application during the pre-treatment of four sulfur water wells from the region of Puebla, mexico, demonstrated its ability to transform their sulfur compounds in sulfates of easy removal by a later stage of reverse osmosis, in an approximately 15 min treatment time process.

The coupling of terahertz optical techniques to scattering-type scanning near-field microscopy(s-SNOm)has recently emerged as a valuable new paradigm for probing the properties of semiconductors and other materials on the *** have demonstrated a family of related techniques,including terahertz nanoscopy(elastic scattering,based on linear optics),time-resolved methods,and nanoscale terahertz emission ***,as with nearly all examples of s-SNOm since the technique’s inception in the mid-1990s,the wavelength of the optical source coupled to the near-field tip is long,usually at energies of 2.5 eV or *** in coupling of shorter wavelengths(i.e.,blue light)to the nanotip has greatly inhibited the study of nanoscale phenomena in wide bandgap materials such as Si and ***,we describe the first experimental demonstration of s-SNOm using blue *** femtosecond pulses at 410 nm,we generate terahertz pulses directly from bulk silicon,spatially resolved with nanoscale resolution,and show that these signals provide spectroscopic information that cannot be obtained using near-infrared *** develop a new theoretical framework to account for this nonlinear interaction,which enables accurate extraction of material *** work establishes a new realm of possibilities for the study of technologically relevant wide-bandgap materials using s-SNOm methods.
