Uncertainty Reduction Through Data Management in the Development, Validation, Calibration, and Operation of a Hurricane Vulnerability Model

Catastrophe models estimate risk at the intersection of hazard,exposure,and *** of these areas requires diverse sources of data,which are very often incomplete,inconsistent,or missing *** poor quality of the data is a source of epistemic uncertainty,which affects the vulnerability models as well as the output of the catastrophe *** article identifies the different sources of epistemic uncertainty in the data,and elaborates on strategies to reduce this uncertainty,in particular through identification,augmentation,and integration of the different types of *** challenges are illustrated through the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model(FPHLM),which estimates insured losses on residential buildings caused by hurricane events in *** define the input exposure,and for model development,calibration,and validation purposes,the FPHLM teams accessed three main sources of data:county tax appraiser databases,National Flood Insurance Protection(NFIP)portfolios,and wind insurance *** data from these different sources were reformatted and processed,and the insurance databases were separately cross-referenced at the county level with tax appraiser *** FPHLM hazard teams assigned estimates of natural hazard intensity measure to each insurance *** efforts produced an integrated and more complete set of building descriptors for each policy in the NFIP and wind *** article describes the impact of these uncertainty reductions on the development and validation of the vulnerability models,and suggests avenues for data *** learned should be of interest to professionals involved in disaster risk assessment and management.

The purpose of this article is to reduce the barrier of developing a house made scanning probe microscope （SPM）. Here in this paper, we cover all the details of programming an SPM controller with LabVIEW. The main controller has three major sequential portions. They are system initialization portion, scan control and image display portion and system shutdown portion. The most complicated and essential part of the main controller is the scan control and image display portion, which is achieved with various parallel tasks. These tasks are scan area and image size adjusting module, Y axis scan control module, X axis scan and image transferring module, parameters readjusting module, emergency shutdown module, etc. A NI7831R FPGA board is used to output the control signals and utilize the Z-axis real time feedback controls. The system emergency shutdown is also carried out by the FPGA module. Receiving the shutdown command from the main controller, the FPGA board will move the probe to its XYZ zero position, turn off all the high voltage control signals and also eliminate the possible oscillations in the system. Finally, how to operate the controller is also briefly introduced. That messy wires fly back and forth is the main drawback of LabVIEW programming. Especially when the program is complicated, this problem becomes more serious. We use a real example to show how to achieve complex functionalities with structural programming and parallel multi task programming. The actual code showed in this paper is clear, intuitive and simple. Following the examples showed in this paper, readers are able to develop simple LabVIEW programs to achieve complex functionalities.

We investigate the level of galaxy assembly bias in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample using ELUCID,a state-of-the-art constrained simulation that accurately reconstructed the initial density perturbations within the SDSS *** top of the ELUCID haloes,we develop an extended HOD model that includes the assembly bias of central and satellite galaxies,parameterized as Q_(cen)and Q_(sat),respectively,to predict a suite of one-and two-point *** particular,our fiducial constraint employs the probability distribution of the galaxy number counts measured on 8 h^(-1)Mpc scales N_8^(g) and the projected cross-correlation functions of quintiles of galaxies selected by N_(8)^(g) with our entire galaxy *** perform extensive tests of the efficacy of our method by fitting the same observables to mock data using both constrained and non-constrained *** discover that in many cases the level of cosmic variance between the two simulations can produce biased constraints that lead to an erroneous detection of galaxy assembly bias if the non-constrained simulation is *** applying our method to the SDSS data,the ELUCID reconstruction effectively removes an otherwise strong degeneracy between cosmic variance and galaxy assembly bias in SDSS,enabling us to derive an accurate and stringent constraint on the *** fiducial ELUCID constraint,for galaxies above a stellar mass threshold M_(*)=10^(10.2)h^(-2)M_(⊙),is Q_(cen)=-0.09±0.05 and Q_(sat)=0.09±0.10,indicating no evidence for a significant (>2σ) galaxy assembly bias in the local Universe probed by ***,our method provides a promising path to the robust modelling of the galaxy-halo connection within future surveys like DESI and PFS.

Paper-based devices have attracted extensive attention due to the growing demand for disposable flexible ***,we integrate semiconducting devices on cellulose paper substrate through a simple abrasion technique that yields high-performance photodetectors.A solvent-free WS_(2) film deposited on paper favors an effective electron-hole separation and hampers *** as-prepared paper-based WS2 photodetectors exhibit a sensitive photoresponse over a wide spectral range spanning from ultraviolet(365 nm)to near-infrared(940 nm).Their responsivity value reaches up to~270 mA W^(−1) at 35 V under a power density of 35 mW cm^(−2).A high performance photodetector was achieved by controlling the environmental exposure as the ambient oxygen molecules were found to decrease the photoresponse and stability of the WS_(2) ***,we have built a spectrometer using such a paperbased WS_(2) device as the photodetecting component to illustrate its potential *** present work could promote the development of cost-effective disposable photodetection devices.

Two-dimensional materials are attractive for constructing high-performance photonic chip-integrated photodetectors because of their remarkable electronic and optical properties and dangling-bond-free ***,the reported chip-integrated two-dimensional material photodetectors were mainly implemented with the configuration of metalsemiconductor-metal,suffering from high dark currents and low responsivities at high operation ***,we report a van der Waals PN heterojunction photodetector,composed of p-type black phosphorous and n-type molybdenum telluride,integrated on a silicon nitride *** built-in electric field of the PN heterojunction significantly suppresses the dark current and improves the *** a bias of 1 V pointing from n-type molybdenum telluride to p-type black phosphorous,the dark current is lower than 7 nA,which is more than two orders of magnitude lower than those reported in other waveguide-integrated black phosphorus *** intrinsic responsivity up to 577 mA W^(−1) is ***,the van der Waals PN heterojunction is tunable by the electrostatic doping to further engineer its rectification and improve the photodetection,enabling an increased responsivity of 709 mA W^(−1).Besides,the heterojunction photodetector exhibits a response bandwidth of~1.0 GHz and a uniform photodetection over a wide spectral range,as experimentally measured from 1500 to 1630 *** demonstrated chip-integrated van der Waals PN heterojunction photodetector with low dark current,high responsivity and fast response has great potentials to develop high-performance on-chip photodetectors for various photonic integrated circuits based on silicon,lithium niobate,polymer,etc.

Understanding the factors that affect animal dispersal behavior is important from both *** and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecological consequences, but for normative insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula germanica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several regions of the world, showing one of the highest spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. germanica, it has been observed that queen flight is limited to 2 distinct periods： early autumn, when new queens leave the nest to mate and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring when new colonies are founded. Our aim was to study the flight behavior of V. germanica queens by focusing on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing as well the potential contribution of queen flight （i.e., distance） to the observed geographical spread. Our results suggest that the distances flown by nonover- wintered queens is greater than that flown by overwintered individuals, suggesting that the main queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding with related drones. Additionally, given the short distances flown and remarkable geographical spread observed, we provide evidence showing that queen dispersal by flight is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than human-aided factors.
