Detection of schistosoma mansoni DNA using polymerase chain reaction from serum and dried blood spot card samples of an adult population in North-western Tanzania

Fecal incontinence is not a diagnosis but a frequent and debilitating common final pathway symptom resulting from numerous different causes. Incontinence not only impacts the patient's self-esteem and quality of life but may result in significant secondary morbidity, disability, and cost. Treatment is difficult without any panacea and an individualized approach should be chosen that frequently combines different modalities. several new technologies have been developed and their specific roles will have to be defined. The scope of this review is outline the evaluation and treatment of patients with fecal incontinence.

Assessment of anti mosquito measures in households and resistance status of Culex species in urban areas in southern Ghana:Implications for the sustainability of ITN use

Objective:To determine resistance status of Culex species to different class of insecticides and assess the major anti-mosquito strategies employed by urban households and their possible effects on malaria ***:structured questionnaires were randomly administered to obtain information on demographic characteristics,measures that people use to prevent mosquito bites and their perception of where mosquitoes breed in their *** susceptibility assays were also carried out using WHO discriminating dosages of four insecticides from different chemical classes against Culex ***:Majority of respondents(54.75%) preferred the use of domestic insecticides in the form of aerosols and *** households that used domestic insecticides,the use of coil was most frequent(62.9%) with a mean(95%CI) of 9.18(8.99,9.37) coils per *** level of pyrethroid-resistance and multiple insecticide resistance in Culex species were also detected in some of the study ***:The excessive use of domestic insecticides and high level of resistance in Culex species observed in the study area has implications for the ITN component of the nation's malaria control program in more subtle *** will lose interest in the use of ITN when it fails to protect users from bites of resistant Culex *** use of domestic insecticides may also select resistance in both malaria vectors and Culex *** this account we recommend that nuisance mosquitoes must be controlled as part of malaria control programs to improve acceptance and utilization of ITN.

A New Guiding Framework for Engaging Diverse Populations in Disaster Risk Reduction: Reach, Relevance, Receptiveness,and Relationships

In urban environments characterized by rich diversity across language, migration status, demographic profiles, and usage of different forms of media, there can be significant challenges to ensuring that particular disaster risk reduction(DRR) communications reach those potentially affected. This article presents a study with 20 Pacific Island community leaders and connectors about their communities' perspectives and anticipated responses to natural hazards in Auckland, New Zealand. Home to the largest population of Pacific people in the world, Auckland provides the basis for understanding the complexities of delivering disaster information across numerous community groups. The rich cultural and linguistic backgrounds of multiple Pacific communities living in this city highlight the need to consider the complexities of disaster messaging related to natural hazards. In particular, the article forwards the importance of incorporating the guiding concepts of reach, relevance, receptiveness, and relationships into a DRR approach with culturally and linguistically diverse groups. These concepts are presented as an embedded guiding framework that can helpfully inform disaster communication.

Evaluation of serum-based real-time PCR to detect schistosoma mansoni infection before and after treatment

Background:To detect acute schistosomiasis,low-intensity infections,or to verify the success of treatment with praziquantel,highly sensitive test methods are *** aim of this study was therefore to demonstrate the performance of schistosoma mansoni specific DNA detection in serum and urine using real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)in an endemic area before and after ***:The study pursued a 1-week and 20-weeks longitudinal design with a treatment intervention among 36 study participants aged 18 to 70 years in the community of Kayenze,a fishing village in Ilemela district on the southern shore of Lake Victoria in north-western Tanzania between February and June ***,urine and stool samples were collected from each participant to diagnose schistosoma mansoni infection before and two times after treatment with praziquantel using serum-and urine based real-time PCR,point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen(POC-CCA)rapid diagnostic test and the microscopic Kato-Katz(KK)*** coefficient(κ)was used to estimate the agreement between these diagnostic tests compared to a combined“gold standard”of positive results by serum-based real-time PCR and/or positive egg counts determined by ***’s Tau rank correlation was used to examine the relationship between cycle threshold(Ct)-values and egg counts and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the median Ct-values of the different examination time ***:By using the combined“gold standard”of the parasitological Kato-Katz test and/or serum-based real-time PCR,a *** prevalence of 77.1%could be determined at *** terms of sensitivity,serum-based realtime PCR(96.3%)and POC-CCA assay(77.8%)showed the highest *** detection of DNA from urine samples showed the lowest sensitivity(33.3%).Treatment with praziquantel resulted in a significantly reduced prevalence of *** infection could be detected by Kato-Katz,with the POC-CCA test only 33.3%.The an

Cellular homeostasis requires a tightly controlled balance between protein synthesis, folding and degradation. Especially long-lived, post-mitotic cells such as neurons depend on an efficient proteostasis system to maintain cellular health over decades. Thus, a functional decline of processes contributing to protein degradation such as autophagy and general lysosomal proteolytic capacity is connected to several age-associated neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson＇s, Alzheimer＇s and Huntington＇s diseases. These so called proteinopathies are characterized by the accumulation and misfolding of distinct proteins, subsequently driving cellular demise. We recently linked efficient lysosomal protein breakdown via the protease cathep- sin D to the Ca2＋/calmodulin-dependent phosphatase calcineurin. In a yeast model for Parkinson＇s disease, functional calcineurin was required for proper trafficking of cathepsin D to the lysosome and for recycling of its endosomal sorting receptor to allow further rounds of shuttling. Here, we discuss these findings in relation to present knowledge about the involvement of cathepsin D in proteinopathies in general and a possible connection between this protease, calcineurin signalling and endosomal sorting in particular. As dysregulation of Ca2＋ homeostasis as well as lysosomal impairment is connected to a plethora of neurode- generative disorders, this novel interplay might very well impact pathologies beyond Parkinson＇s disease.

High precision magnetometer for geomagnetic exploration onboard of the China seismo-Electromagnetic satellite

The China seismo-Electromagnetic satellite(CsEs) is the first platform of China's earthquake observation system in space and the first satellite of China's geophysical field detection missions. The high precision magnetometer(HPM), which contains two fluxgate sensors and a coupled dark state magnetometer(CDsM), measures the vector of the Earth's magnetic field with a bandwidth from DC to 15 Hz. The two fluxgate sensors are in a gradiometer configuration in order to reduce satellite interferences. Additionally, the CDsM sensor measures the scalar value of the magnetic field with higher accuracy and *** data processing and calibration methods have been prepared to get accurate vector magnetic field data. This includes the calibration of each of the three sensors, the absolute vector correction algorithm, the spacecraft magnetic interference elimination and the coordinate transformation method. Also the instrument performances based on ground calibration activities are shown in this article.

Age and ovarian development are related to worker personality and task allocation in the ant Leptothorax acervorum

In social insects, workers of different morphological castes and age are known to act differently. Yet, it is unclear how body size and ovarian development influence worker personalities (i.e. consistent behavioral variation) and task allocation in similar aged ant workers of monomorphic species. Behavioral variation is thought to be a key element of division of labor, but few studies have linked worker personality to task allocation. We investigated individual behavior in Leptothorax acervorum ant workers at two time points during the first three months of their life and in two different settings. We observed worker behavior in the nest (i.e. task allocation) and in standardized aggression, exploration and brood care experiments (i.e. personality) and found behavioral repeatability in foraging and exploration. Further, workers acted consistently across settings: workers with a more aggressive and exploratory personality type were more active in the nest. Moreover, ovarian development was associated with worker personality and task allocation: older workers with well-developed ovaries foraged less, but were more aggressive and exploratory. In accordance with the typical age-polyethism of social insects, workers became more active and foraged more as they grew older. Consequently, our study suggests that task allocation in Leptothorax acervorum is not only influenced by ovarian development and age, but moreover by the personalities of its workers.
