Background Cardiac arrhythmias are common conditions in older ***,there is limited literature on associations between cardiac arrhythmias and physical performance or *** therefore aimed to prospectively investigate associations between cardiac arrhythmias and changes in disability and physical performance during 8 years of follow-up,using data from the Italian Longitudinal Study on Aging(ILSA).Methods Cardiac arrhythmias diagnosis was posed through a screening phase,confirmed by a *** onset of disability in activities of daily living(ADL)and the changes in several physical performance tests during follow-up were considered as ***-adjusted and propensity-score Cox Proportional Hazard models and mixed models were used for exploring associations between cardiac arrhythmia and the outcomes of *** The prevalence of cardiac arrhythmia at baseline was 23.3%.People reporting cardiac arrhythmia at the baseline were significantly older,more frequently male,smokers and reported a higher presence of all medical conditions investigated(hypertension,heart failure,angina,myocardial infarction,diabetes,stroke),but no difference in dementia,Parkinsonism,cognitive or mood *** arrhythmia at baseline was significantly associated with the incidence of disability in ADL(HR=1.23;95%:CI:1.01–1.50;P=0.0478 in propensity score analyses;HR=1.28;95%CI:1.01–1.61;P=0.0401 in fully adjusted models).Cardiac arrhythmia at baseline was also associated with a significant worsening in balance test(P=0.0436).Conclusions The presence of cardiac arrhythmia at baseline was associated with a significant higher risk of disability and of worsening in some physical performance tests,particularly those relating to *** and frequently assessing physical performance in older people affected by cardiac arrhythmia can be important to prevent a loss of physical performance,with further,potential,complications of medical managemen

Botanical, soil chemistry and soil microbiology variables were tested as predictors of in situ soil respiration rate in the various terrestrial habitats on sub-Antarctic Marion Island (47oS, 38oE). Inorganic P and total N concentration were the best predictors amongst the chemistry variables and bacteria plate count the best of the microbiology variables. However, while these chemistry and microbiology variables could accurately predict soil respiration rate for particular habitats, they proved inadequate predictors across the whole range of habitats. The best suite of predictors comprised only botanical variables (relative covers of five plant guilds) and accounted for 94% of the total across-habitat variation in soil respiration rate. Mean field soil respiration rates (2.1 - 15.5 mmol CO2 m-2 h-1) for habitats not influenced by seabirds or seals are similar to rates in comparable Northern Hemisphere tundra habitats. Seabird and seal manuring enhances soil respiration rates to values (up to 27.6 mmol CO2 m-2 h-1) higher than found at any tundra site. Glucose, N, P or N plus P were added to three habitats with contrasting soil types;a fellfield with mineral, nutrient-poor soil, a mire with organic, nutrient-poor soil and a shore-zone herbfield heavily manured by penguins and with organic, nutrient-rich soil. Glucose addition stimulated soil respiration in the fellfield and mire (especially the former) but not in the coastal herbfield soil. N and P, alone or together, did not stimulate respiration at any of the habitats, but adding glucose to fellfield soils that had previously been fortified with P or NP caused a similar increase in respiration rate, which was greater than the increase when adding glucose to soils fortified only with N. This suggests that fellfield soil respiration is limited by P rather than N, and that there is no synergism between the two nutrients. The diversity of plant architecture is determined by axillary meristems (AMs). AMs are produced from small groups of stem cells in the axils of leaf primordia and generate vegetative branches and reproductive inflorescences . Previous studies identified genes critical for AM development that function in auxin biosynthesis, transport, and signaling. barren stalkl (ba1), a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, acts downstream of auxin to control AM formation. Here, we report the cloning and characterization of barren stalk2 (ba2), a mutant that fails to produce ears and has fewer branches and spikelets in the tassel, indicating that ba2 functions in reproductive AM development. Furthermore, the ba2 mutation suppresses tiller growth in the teosinte branchedl mutant, indicating that ba2 also plays an essential role in vegetative AM development. The ba2 gene encodes a protein that co-localizes and heterodimerizes with BA1 in the nucleus . Characterization of the genetic interaction between ba2 and ba1 demonstrates that ba1 shows a gene dosage effect in ba2 mutants, providing further evidence that BA1 and BA2 act together in the same pathway. Characterization of the molecular and genetic interaction between ba2 and additional genes required for the regulation of ba1 further supports this finding. The ba1 and ba2 genes are orthologs of rice genes, LAX PANICLE1 (LAX1) and LAX2, respectively, hence providing insights into pathways controlling AMs development in grasses.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are heat engines operating between warm tropical oceans and the cold upper troposphere. The purpose of this article is to examine the existing theories for hurricanes and tropical storms, and to discuss their validity. It is argued that contrary to previous claims that hurricanes are Carnot engines, these systems operate at efficiencies considerably below their maximum thermodynamic efficiency. As such, the validity of the current theories of thermodynamics of hurricanes remains questionable, and the phenomenon continues to be a geophysical enigma.

Background:We hypothesized that supplementation of nursery and grower pig diets with coconut oil in the absence of antibiotics would yield maintenance of glucose homeostasis,growth performance,and immune function similar to what is achieved with nursery and grower pig diets containing *** received the same base treatment diets from d24(weaning)to d71 of age and had blood and fecal samples collected on d24,d31,d45 and d71 for measurement of whole blood glucose,serum insulin,cortisol and cytokines,and fecal *** had weekly weights and daily feed consumption measured throughout the *** were euthanized at d71 and subcutaneous fat and ileal contents were collected for assessment for fatty acids and microbiome,*** treatments consisted of 2%soybean oil plus antibiotics(ABX;n=22),2%soybean oil without antibiotics(NABX;n=22),and 2%coconut oil without antibiotics(COC;n=22).Statistical analysis examined the effect of diet within each timepoint using a repeated measures ***:Pigs fed COC diet had decreased serum insulin levels,maintained feed intake,feed conversion and weight gain,and,based on serum cytokines and fecal microbiome,were immunologically similar to ABX-fed ***,NABX-fed pigs performed similarly to the ABX-fed pigs in all parameters except for serum ***,there was no difference in the incidence of diarrhea between any of the diet ***:This study demonstrates that dietary antibiotics are not necessary to maintain growth performance in nursery and grower ***,dietary antibiotics appear to modulate circulating cytokine *** coconut oil is neither harmful nor helpful to growth performance or immune function in nursery and grower pigs but does modulate serum insulin ***,while coconut oil fed at 2%by weight is a suitable substitute for dietary antibiotics,this study suggests that no substitute for dietary antibiotics is needed at all.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the sequential extraction system for phenolic compounds and pectin from waste ‘Granny smith’ apple peel using ultrasound. The effects of solvent, formic acid concentration (CFA), and the number of extraction steps on the content of individual and total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity, were determined. Then, pectin was obtained from apple peel before (BE) and after (AE) phenolic compounds extraction, using conventional (TR) or ultrasound-assisted procedures (US). The two-steps 80% Acetone (0% CFA) extraction system had the highest TPC (3.47 g GAE/Kg). Procyanidin B2 (0.03-0.77 g/kg) was the major phenolic compound extracted from ‘Granny smith’ apple peel. AE pectin extraction yield (6.38% for US and 4.92% for TR) was higher than BE. Pectin obtained had 57-60% DE, 9.3-10.3% Methoxyl content, and 436-460 equivalent weight. Wasted apple peel is a great low-cost source of phenolic compounds and pectin. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve the highest yields of both compounds through appropriate extraction sequences (AE: phenolic compound extraction followed by pectin extraction) and alternative technologies like ultrasound-assisted extraction.

Role of simulation in kidney stone disease:A systematic review of literature trends in the 26 years

Modified vaccinia virus Ankara(MVA) is an approved smallpox vaccine and a promising vaccine vector for other pathogens as well as for cancer therapeutics with more than 200 current or completed clinical *** was derived by passaging the parental Ankara vac-cine virus hundreds of times in chick embryo fibroblasts during which it lost the ability to rep-licate in human and most other mammalian *** this replication deficiency is an important safety feature,the genetic basis of the host restriction is not ***,an unbiased human genome-wide RNAi screen in human A549 cells revealed that the zinc-finger antiviral protein(ZAP),previously shown to inhibit certain RNA viruses,is a host restriction factor for MVA,a DNA *** studies demonstrated enhanced MVA replication in several human cell lines following knockdown of ***,CRISPR-Cas9 knockout of ZAP in human A549 cells increased MVA replication and spread by more than one log but had no effect on a non-attenuated strain of vaccinia *** intact viral C16 protein,which had been disrupted in MVA,antagonized ZAP by binding and sequester-ing the protein in cytoplasmic punctate *** aimed at exploring the mecha-nism by which ZAP restricts MVA replication in the absence of C16 showed that knockout of ZAP had no discernible effect on viral DNA or individual mRNA or protein species as deter-mined by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction,deep RNA sequencing and mass spec-trometry,***,inactivation of ZAP reduced the number of aberrant,dense,spherical particles that typically form in MVA-infected human cells,suggesting that ZAP has a novel role in interfering with a late step in the assembly of infectious MVA virions in the absence of the C16 protein.

BACKGROUND Minimally invasive techniques for treatment of urinary stones requires expertise,experience and endoscopic *** provide a low-stress and low-risk environment while providing a realistic set-up and training *** To report the publication trend of‘simulation in urolithiasis’over the last 26 *** Research of all published papers on“Simulation in Urolithiasis”was performed through PubMed database over the last 26 years,from January 1997 to December *** were labelled and divided in three subgroups:(1)Training papers;(2)Clinical simulation application or surgical procedures;and(3)Diagnostic radiology *** subgroup was then divided into two 13-year time periods to compare and identify the contrast of different decades:period-1(1997-2009)and period-2(2010-2022).RESULTS A total of 168 articles published on the application of simulation in urolithiasis over the last 26 years(training:n=94,surgical procedures:n=66,and radiology:n=8).The overall number of papers published in simulation in urolithiasis was 35 in Period-1 and 129 in Period-2,an increase of+269%(P=0.0002).Each subgroup shows a growing trend of publications from Period-1 to Period-2:training papers+279%(P=0.001),surgical simulations+264%(P=0.0180)and radiological simulations+200%(P=0.2105).CONCLUSION In the last decades there has been a step up of papers regarding training protocols with the aid of various simulation devices,with simulators now a part of training *** the development of 3D-printed and high-fidelity models,simulation for surgical procedure planning and patients counseling is also a growing field and this trend will continue to rise in the next few years.
