The Three-Step Workflow:A Pragmatic Approach to Allocating Academic Hospitals' Affiliations for Bibliometric Purposes

Purpose:A key question when ranking universities is whether or not to allocate the publication output of affiliated hospitals to *** paper presents a method for classifying the varying degrees of interdependency between academic hospitals and universities in the context of the Leiden ***/methodology/approach:Hospital nomenclatures vary worldwide to denote some form of collaboration with a university,however they do not correspond to universally standard ***,rather than seeking a normative definition of academic hospitals,we propose a three-step workflow that aligns the university-hospital relationship with one of three general models:full integration of the hospital and the medical faculty into a single organization;health science centres in which hospitals and medical faculty remain separate entities albeit within the same governance structure;and structures in which universities and hospitals are separate entities which collaborate with one *** classification system provides a standard through which publications which mention affiliations with academic hospitals can be better ***:In the paper we illustrate how the three-step workflow effectively translates the three above-mentioned models into two types of instrumental relationships for the assignation of publications:"associate"and"component".When a hospital and a medical faculty are fully integrated or when a hospital is part of a health science centre,the relationship is classified as *** a hospital follows the model of collaboration and support,the relationship is classified as *** compilation of data following these standards allows for a more uniform comparison between worldwide educational and re search *** limitations:The workflow is resource intensive,depends heavily on the information provided by universities and hospitals,and is more challenging for languages that use nonLatin ***,the applicati

Regulation of floral senescence in Arabidopsis by coordinated action of CONSTANS and jasmonate signaling

In Arabidopsis,photoperiodic flowering is controlled by the regulatory hub gene CONSTANS(CO),whereas floral organ senescence is regulated by the jasmonates(JAs).Because these processes are chronologically ordered,it remains unknown whether there are common regulators of both *** this study,we discovered that CO protein accumulates in Arabidopsis flowers after floral induction,and it displays a diurnal pattern in floral organs different from that in the *** observed that altered CO expression could affect flower senescence and abscission by interfering with JA response,as shown by petal-specific transcriptomic analysis as well as CO overexpression in JA synthesis and signaling *** found that CO has a ZIM(ZINC-FINGER INFLORESCENCE MERISTEM)like domain that mediates its interaction with the JA response repressor JAZ3(jasmonate ZIM-domain 3).Their interaction inhibits the repressor activity of JAZ3,resulting in activation of downstream transcription factors involved in promoting flower ***,we showed that CO,JAZ3,and the E3 ubiquitin ligase COI1(Coronatine Insensitive 1)could form a protein complex in planta,which promotes the degradation of both CO and JAZ3 in the presence of *** together,our results indicate that CO,a key regulator of photoperiodic flowering,is also involved in promoting flower senescence and abscission by augmenting JA signaling and *** propose that coordinated recruitment of photoperiodic and JA signaling pathways could be an efficient way for plants to chronologically order floral processes and ensure the success of offspring production.

Dehydration of Agro Products in a Hybrid Solar Dryer Controlled through a Fuzzy Logic System

Drying is one of the most energy-intensive processes in agro-products industry. For this reason, using solar energy appears as an attractive not polluting alternative to be used in drying processes. However, the daily and seasonal fluctuations in the radiation level require using energy accumulators with phase change materials (paraffin wax), to have a continuous drying processes. In hybrid solar dryers with energy accumulation system, a control system is essential to coordinate the control valves that allow the income of air that comes from the solar panel or from the energy accumulator. In this work, we implemented an advances multivariable control system that uses fuzzy logic in the hybrid solar dryer. The dryer includes an energy accumulator panel with paraffin wax as phase change material. The input variables were ambient temperature and solar radiation, both not controllable. The controlled variables were the opening level of the solar panel and accumulator energy valves. The control program consisted in an algorithm implemented with the “Fuzzy” toolbox in Matlab. Data were acquired with OPTO 22. The control system performed adequately when used to dehydrate mushroom slices and plums. Closing or opening the respective valves as a response to the variations of solar radiation and ambient air temperature allowed optimizing the use of solar energy.

Detection of Antinuclear Antibodies in Canine Serum by Immunoperoxidase in MDCK and Indirect Immunofluorescence in HEp2 Cells

Antinuclear antibodies are found in animals suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and some other diseases, their presence in the blood is determined by antinuclear antibody (ANA) test using indirect immunofluorescence (IF) with HEp2 cells as a substrate. In this work, an immunoperoxidase (IP) assay was developed to evaluate the ANAs in canine sera, using canine kidney cell lines (MDCK) and compared with a commercial immunofluorescence test on Hep2 cells for this system, a fluoresceinated anti-canine Ig antibody was standardized. The study was performed on 50 sera from dogs submitted to the laboratory with different clinical diagnoses of autoimmune-associated diseases. The procedures on both cells were unified to perform comparisons of the reactions, direct sera or at different dilutions were added to a monolayer of permeabilized MDCK cells, followed by a peroxidized anti-canine IgG conjugate, and a substrate for the IP reaction. The same sera were tested on the commercial IF assay on Hep2 cell system. In 22/50 cases, the presence of LE cells in peripheral blood was determined. A high correlation was found in the detection of antinuclear antibodies between both cell lines and techniques, however there were differences in the reaction patterns in the nucleus and cytoplasm between cell lines. The diffuse nuclear pattern observed in MDCK cells was more related to the presence of high percentages of LE cells in peripheral blood. The differences found in the results were possibly associated with the presence of homologous antigens between the MDCK cells and the dog. In addition, the methodology and standardization for the use and interpretation of a reference serum was developed to unify the interpretation criteria in the laboratory.

Rock1 Inhibitor Abrogates Chronic Rejection in Rat Cardiac Model System

Background: We have shown previously that the abrogation of acute and chronic rejection of rat cardiac allografts occurs through the down-regulation of RhoA pathway and involves the changes in RhoA kinase (ROCK)-dependent actin cytoskeleton and T cell motility. Here we studied the ability of the Y-27632, a highly selective inhibitor of Rho-associated protein kinase p160ROCK (ROCK1), to abrogate chronic rejection of the allograft and influence T cell infiltration. Methods: Heterotopic cardiac transplants were performed between donor Wistar Furth (WF) and ACI recipient rats. Controls received sub-therapeutic dose of cyclosporine (CsA, 10 mg/kg) for 3 days or 7 days therapeutic dose of cyclosporine. The experimental groups of ACI recipient received one preoperative dose of the Y-27632 inhibitor (2 mg/kg, gavage feed) in conjunction with the sub-therapeutic dose of CsA for 3 days or inhibitor alone for 7 days. The cardiac grafts were harvested at 100 days of post-transplantation for histological and immunohistochemical assessment of chronic rejection, vascular sclerosis, and infiltration by different T cell subtypes. Results: Cardiac allografts from recipients exposed to Y-27632 inhibitor in conjunction with sub-therapeutic dose of CsA showed drastically reduced vascular sclerosis, minimal myocardial total cellular infiltration, and were selectively infiltrated with Foxp3+ T regulatory (Treg) cells. Conclusions: Our novel finding that a single dose of the ROCK1 inhibitor Y-27632 attenuates chronic rejection in rat cardiac model system by promoting development of Treg cells warrants its potential as a novel therapeutic agent specific for the inhibition of chronic rejection.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma(MPM) is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. It is a rare tumor linked to asbestos exposure and is associated with a poor prognosis. Until very recently, patients with advanced or unresectable disease had limited treatment options, primarily based on doublet chemotherapy with cisplatin and pemetrexed. In 2020 and 2021, after more than a decade with no major advances or new drugs, two phase Ⅲ clinical trials published results positioning immunotherapy as a promising option for the first-and second-line treatment of MPM. Immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of many cancers and is also showing encouraging results in malignant mesothelioma. Both immune checkpoint inhibition and dual cytotoxic T-lymphocyte–associated antigen 4 and programmed death-ligand 1 pathway blockade resulted in significantly improved overall survival in randomized phase Ⅲ trials. In the Check Mate 743 trial, first-line therapy with nivolumab plus ipilimumab outperformed standard chemotherapy, while in the CONFIRM trial, nivolumab outperformed placebo in patients previously treated with chemotherapy. These two trials represent a major milestone in the treatment of MPM and are set to position immunotherapy as a viable alternative for treatment-naive patients and patients with progressive disease after chemotherapy.

Optimization of a Classical Algorithm for the Alignment of Genomic Sequences with Artificial Bee Colony

This article shows genomic alignment methods using the classic“Needleman”and“Smith-Waterman”algorithms,the latter they were optimized by the ABC(artificial bee colony)*** the genomic alignment,a goal state is not presented,the experiments that are carried out show alternative alignments by ABC were *** types of alignments could exist within the classical algorithm,based on a horizontal,vertical,diagonal and inverse search mechanism on a match value *** ABC-Smith Waterman algorithm was generated from the genomic sequences written in rows and columns for the search for similarities that will provide values that ABC uses to process and provide more results of alignments that can be used by scientists for their experiments and research.
